I have two episode left but I'm really enjoying it. Minor complaints but overall, its great. Only watched a few episode of the anime and haven't read anything. So the show is a starting point for me and it does make me want to watch the anime, which is high praise. So happy fans appear to be please with show. This is a beautiful adaptation, every theme, what One Piece is really about, all of that is suppose to come clear by this point in the anime and they NAILED IT! @@m0-m0597 Yes there is. It is implied that Kuina's father instilled that insecurity of hers, making her think that she could never accomplish her dream to be the greatest swordmaster because of her sex (this is canon, by the way). Garp is also kinda toxic since he's been disregarding Luffy's wishes and ambitions ever since he was a kid and tried to control his life, forcing him to follow in his footsteps.

Your criticism about Garp’s motivations probably comes from the fact that the whole Marine subplot is almost completely original to the live action. In the anime, after Coby joins the marines, we basically don’t see any more of him in the East Blue saga aside from a 2 episode mini-arc about how he and Helmeppo started training under Garp, then they don’t get reintroduced into the story until after episode 300. Garp is also a lot more laid back in the anime. While he did still try to force Luffy to become a marine instead of a pirate, he never really cared about his duties as a vice-admiral unless something very important was happening
@kylehart643 Жыл бұрын
I think if they made ax hand Morgan the Garp of the live action it would have played better. Especially if helmepo sees Captain Kuro alive. It would be a turning point for the character and be in harmony with challenging pre-conceptions
@That_Lamer Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's completely original. It's basically some of the early koby/garp development via cover stories adapted to the romance dawn plot. We're just getting it really early, because they can kind of get away with introducing it now and building up the characters, so that when they're trying to cram alabasta, skypiea, etc sagas into a single season, they don't have to waste budget and episode run time building them up then. It's not truly plot faithful to those cover stories, but still distills the spirit of them.
@critica77y77 Жыл бұрын
On the one hand, Garp is pretty different from how he is in the manga, but I think the changes actually worked better than some people give them credit for. In the live-action, Luffy is just starting out as a pirate, and Garp understands how the World Government works. He understands that it's merciless and that by choosing to search for the One Piece, Luffy is putting himself in its crosshairs. Luffy has yet to really prove himself, and Garp isn't sure he can handle everything that comes with being a pirate. He may have a strained relationship with his grandson, but he does love him, and doesn't want Luffy to put himself in danger. Over the course of the season, he accepts that Luffy does have what it takes to face the challenges that come with his chosen path, and he won't be dissuaded from it. Expect Garp to be more laid-back when he returns in the live-action series. By that point, Garp will know that Luffy can take everything the WG can throw at him and then some.

@That_Lamer Жыл бұрын
I loved all of the koby/helmeppo development this early on by bringing the themes/vibe of early garp storyline and koby cover stories waaaaay forward. They weren't really 1:1, but given how infrequently we see those characters in the manga, it really helps instantly develop these characters, so that when they do show up in another season (thats probably trying to focus hard on getting the pace right for the main stories) we can instantly have a "oh hell yeah it's koby/garp/helmeppo" moment, rather than then having to build them. They really put together a dream team of a production crew and cast.

As a One Piece manga reader, I personally really loved this season. Yes, they removed minor characters and other moments, but they still kept that same emotional impact when those scenes needed them. As for FilmSpeak and other new comers, don't try to rush consuming One Piece. Use the backburner method: Finish other content that is shorter, but from time to time, consume One Piece until you want a break, then rinse and repeat. It's okay to not be caught up because One Piece is a story that is more about the adventures of the Straw Hats than the climax of each arc (even though I really enjoy most of the arcs). If you are interested in picking up where the live action season 1 ended: Anime: Episode 55ish (this is near the end of the East Blue Saga) Manga: I would say chapter 95/96 The live-action does take certain plot points and easter eggs that's introduced later in the manga/anime but instead introduces it this season (SPOILER EXAMPLE) Garp's relation to Luffy doesn't happen until the next few arcs, and Koby's Marine subplot is more off-screen where as in the live-action, we actually see Koby's growth in real-time (END SPOILER EXAMPLE). I don't want to make this comment any longer, but I'm just glad they did (in my opinion) the most faithful adaptation possible for live-action medium.
@chaosjoerg9811 Жыл бұрын
I honestly feel like the emotional impactful moments work better in the live action than the manga. Like everything is more relatable, more, well closer to reality. That is not to say that there wouldn't be 100 ways to do it wrong, but they didn't. The nature of Luffy, the devil fruits, the fight scenes and all that were impossible to do from the start, but that's another story. I think they focused on the right things to make it come alive.

In the world wide popularity poll that Jump magazine ran to celebrate One Piece's 20th year of publication, Nami came in 3rd (Zoro 2nd, and Luffy 1st). For regional rankings, Nami came in 1st for North America. Nami *is* popular, is what I am saying. Also, Nami saves the crew like dozens of times by way of her being the most reasonable member of the crew until a certain lover of history joins. They would all be dead without her. But I guess the same could be said about all of the crew. Everyone gets moments where they save the crew from danger. Yes, even Usopp.
@vDREEGONv7 ай бұрын
That's one of my favorite things about One Piece. Luffy is very aware he would not survive on his own, he needs his crew, so just like everyone depends on luffy, he himself also relies heavily on everyone else. There are so many times where a character is in critical danger as you said and then someone just barely makes it in time to save them, or characters sacrifice themselves to save others and then believes in their friends to come save them or think they won't go through the trouble of doing so which then is super satisfying when they do arrive to save them and does it with all their might leaving the character in disbelief these people would go through all of that just to save them. But that's what friends are for, which the live action too shows perfectly! This story shines in it's way of showing that we all are cappable of so much more when we put trust in those around us than when we try to do everything alone, and whole heartedly I have actually learned to trust people more because of this show :)

I say that as someone who really loves Don Krieg, instead of getting either the LA spent that time focusing on character development that for me worked really well. I understand it’s disappointing some things are absent but to me that doesn’t mean it’s bad. The show isn’t worse for not having those things and I get it I have the same emotional attachment to those moments. Could the show be better with those moments, maybe but if I were to look at the show on its own merit the absence of these things does not make it not feel like One Piece or make the show worse.

@hidetakamiyazaki1825 Bowing is definitely a Japanese cultural habit and it would've been weird for western audiences to witness two European men doing it in real life. They could've done a hug but I think they chose not to, to emphasize their inability to show their real care and appreciation for each other until the very last moment when they realize it's really a goodbye. I guess this is a western trope of stubborn fathers and their sons having a very emotionally refrained relationship where even small change is really significant.

@hidetakamiyazaki1825 We got Sanji and Zeff almost leaving on bad terms but making up in the end. Don Krieg vs Luffy being removed didn't really take away any of the story and themes. Being caught up with the manga. Compared to the changes both the anime and manga make to the story of the early days. Outside of nesscary cuts to make for live action overall the live action makes much smarter changes. I like how much they devlop Koby made work even better with how great the acting for him is. Speeding up Usopp's arc. Just getting rid of Don Krieg and Pearl. Making Buggy alot scarier. I adore a very small change the most. In the manga after Nami asks for help Luffy simply responds "OKAY!". But I think the live actions line of "OF COURSE I WILL!" is much more impactful.

81 chapters, 15 pages - it's not just "okay". You can google the meaning of the original phrase "当たり前だ". But more important is the emotion on Luffy's face. The fact that the residents and Nojiko do not know the motives of Nami is the main flaw in the script of the LA. This removes the additional depth of the tragedy of the situation.

@@DmitryKey Agreed on this. I'm really not sure why they changed the village knowing about it or not. It feels like the time it would have taken for that would have been minimal if any compared to what they did show, so it seems a really odd change to have made.
@Pangora2 Жыл бұрын
@@DmitryKey And bonus lines like when the villagers are all ready to fight, and Nami, instead of trying to 'protect' everyone decides to let them join and say, "everyone, die with me!" Nami winds up being protective of Vivi in the next arc as she goes on the same journey. Instead of trying to save everyone without their inputs she can then ask for everyone to also risk their lives. This is the famous scene of her and Luffy brawling in the desert. Cutting essential scenes should not be done lightly as the series progresses.

I hear a lot of hate toward how specific characters have been handled or pacing issues simply because we already know this stuff and are irritated by certain things. While I agree with some of the criticism by fans, it’s nice to here a fresh perspective who is brand new to one piece. That characters we thought were not done correctly, made your experience way better. One thing about the original One Piece manga is that it 100% commits to the bit. Yes, there are sharkmen, restaurants in the middle of the ocean and fruits that can make you stretchy. But yes, there's also gut wrenching tragedy and uplifting victories and inescapable poignance. Because the live action follows its lead and both makes a larger than life ridiculous world _and_ commits to the emotional sincerity of the story, it works. It doesn't hurt that a lot of folks who worked on the show were fans, too.

I have read almost the entire One Piece manga (what's been officially translated up to around Chapter 1,050), and you've managed to nail a lot of the overarching themes despite never having read the original, and I think that speaks to how well Tomorrow Inc. and Netflix did their jobs on this. Every episode I watched, a character would say/do something and I'd say, "Yep. That's 100% in-character. They get it." The exception is Buggy, but his changes are arguably for the better.

It really does seem like Netflix has stumbled onto their Pirates of the Caribbean- a movie no one expected to set the world on fire, was only loosely based off a Disney World ride, and yet the sheer luck of marrying great casting with superb visuals that seamlessly blend practical and digital effects makes a legendary swashbuckling good time, even if you have no idea what the source material is.

My only complaint is, sometimes you can feel the pacing being too fast because of how much had to be trimmed down from the Manga and anime. But at the end of the day, everything just works. They embraced the goody weirdness of the anime while still keeping the characters grounded and real. They didn't tone down the colors but made sure to not over saturate either. This feels like a passion project and you can feel the crews love for the source. Also, Emily Rudd is a Weeb, and im all for her giving the rest of the cast anime watch suggestions.
@ciclon5682 Жыл бұрын
embracing the weird parts is what sells it to me. they dont look for explanations of downgrade the ridiculousness. it shows very clearly and proudly that this is an adaptation of a shonen manga and it embraces that by keeping all the goofy things seen in manga an anime in general like the wacky worldbuilding, weird characters, epic fights, ridiculous powers and attacks and my personal favourite, calling out special attacks just like in shonen works.
