In an interview in 2008, Lucas stated that even though there was a MacGuffin in every Indiana Jones movie, it still needed to be grounded in reality, and "you can't just make something up, like a time machine" to move the plot forward.

There were three references to Last Crusade. At the beginning when Indy was sleeping in his apartment there were the two pics from Indy’s dad’s home of the crucifixion of Jesus and the Knight taking the leap of faith. Then he mentions his dad’s watch. Crusade will always be my favorite.

Chris I absolutely loved this review and you pretty much hit the nail on the head here w all your points, I happen to also think Crystal Skull is severely underrated as I grew up w it and it still feels very Indy, even w all the aliens and such. I happen to be a believer in aliens as we have only discovered less than 0.0001% of the universe and they are very likely out there somewhere, the time travel lost me tho in this movie as I felt they went completely off the rails and I think that Indy should have destroyed the Dial like Basil said or bring it to a museum!! Keep up the amazing content my friend and also a big thank you for answering my question in your insta Q&A!! Your the man Chris!

I agree there are decent amount of plot holes. Didn’t really care for the time travel either. Still enjoyed the film but I kinda hoped we would get a scene at the end of the movie with Indy, Marion, and Sallah together. Kinda disappointed that sallah just walked in the room and walked out without really a reunion scene with them.

So I wanted to wait till I watched the film to watch this. And I'm kinda happy I did. When I watched your spoiler free review Chris, I was so confused by what you said. However, I completely understand what u meant. There was a lot of things that I loved about this film. The opening scene during WWII, as well as some of the action scenes like on the train and in the subway. Even the CGI and ofc the score by the goat John Williams. I did also like how the film did try to do some new things, like having underwater scenes. Something that's never been done in Indy films. I also had no idea Marion was in this. Lastly, both Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller Bridge gave great performances. Though I question the writing with some of the things Bridge's character does. On that note, I did have some issues. For Indiana Jones at least, personally it felt way to long. Maybe it's just me, but by killing Mutt and saying Indy and Marion are divorced, doesn't that ruin on the ending of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? And then despite that the two reconnect at the end of the film with no explanation which makes no sense? My big problem however, is the fact that time travel is in this. Again idk if it's just me but I feel like it goes completely against what Indiana Jones is. Seriously can't believe I'm agreeing with that that the aliens from Crystal Skull make more sense lol. Seriously hope they don't use it in Stranger Things: Season 5. I definitely need to see it again to confirm my thoughts. Also, another Last Crusade easter egg is the picture of Jesus on the cross in Indy's apartment is the same one his father had from that film.

They couldve played with the theme of time and its changes with loss of son and divorce and the fact that hes coming to the end of his life. I wouldve liked him to take charge though. They could have edtablished his want to escape away from his everyday life more, maybe he approaches helena because he wants to avoid the trauma he carries and goes on one more adventure. He gets the choice at the end to live in literal history. And then helena should take him back like she did

To me the ending worked precisely because he comes face to face with a historical figure, it was cool to see it happen and to me it made sense that he wanted to stay. I think if you really understand the character of Indiana Jones it is totally plausible. It worked much better than the ending of Crystal Skull for me, I also didnt mind the idea of aliens by definition for Indy, but the way it was done was just very lame and unimaginative, both the alien and spaceship looked so stereotypically like every alien and spaceship ever seen. I will agree with you that the end felt rushed and abrupt.

I just like to comment on the Helena Shaw character. While Helena can be a little unlikable at times, I think that is the point of the character. She is supposed to reflect how Indiana Jones was at the beginning of his journey in Temple of doom which takes place first chronologically. In that movie, Indy started off, selfish and only going after the Sankara stones just for fame and glory, just like how Helena is doing the same for the dial. However, over the course of the film, they both start to realize that it’s not about the fame and glory of it all It’s about doing the right thing. That’s also why Helena at the end of the movie, decides to bring Indy back to the present day herself, because she cares about him and she’s tired of being selfish like she was before.

The time travel element was my favourite part because it added to the meta theme of the movie and actually made it more emotional. The ending was rushed though and the set-pieces are the worst in the entire series. Its the word Indy Movie but im accepting of it Edit: the de-aging was my least favourite aspect, it looks hideous.

I dont remember much about the previous indiana jones films, but this film did not do it for me. It seemed unclear why anyone wanted the dial because even helena couldve been going for it to honour her father but its not cleared up. This film didnt do it for me. I dont think ive ever liked indiana jones. Best parts of the film are the bit on the boat when he talks about his son and his marriage and i liked the archimedes tomb search
@dawsynasay4841 Жыл бұрын
Helena wanted the dial for money; Voller wanted it to go back and help the Nazis win WW2, and Indy wanted it so that he could help stop his son from enlisting and dying. It’s pretty clear in the film

Yeah, cause ghosts that melts your face, magic stones, a cup that gives you eternal life, beings from another dimension are just so much more realistic than time travel. And to go further, Indy actually have traveled to another dimension himself, fought against zombies, terracotta warriors , ancient robots, Dracula etc, so time travel isn't that much more far fetched from everything else he has experienced. Indy has been described as the guy who has been everywhere and seen everything. A time machine is something every archaeologist have wished they had at some point. Indy is the lucky one to have experienced it. The only thing that got me a bit off is; how long was he out after that punch and how did they get him all the way home to his apartment. That's now a debate similar to how he survived the submarine ride in Raiders.
@landonadams8122 Жыл бұрын
The de-aging was decent, but it was pretty jarring to hear present-day Harrison Ford's voice coming from his younger face. Also it almost seemed like he had the same expression his face the whole time. The plot logistics were so nonsensically cobbled together and the dialogue so poor that I think the writers just literally didnt care. There was a good story somewhere in there, especially with the emotional stakes, but it was very poorly executed.

What I hate the most is how unlikeable character. indy is fine, but he is too much of a passive protagonist. Helena is literally a piece of shit until the end. He framed Indiana Jones and locks hims to di/The kid is Helena's friend, so a piece of shit by default. The villain's companion was more likable than the main characters
@ThomasMoore-f6z Жыл бұрын
I agree. They didn't make it clear her arc in this film. I didn't like the kid because he was just helping someone steal something to sell at an illegal auction. He didn't want Helena to maybe keep it even if it was close to her because of her father. Helena didn't seem to express much emotion regarding her father, I would've liked to see that. I also have a problem with the title. It's not an Indiana Jones movie, it's a dial of destiny movie. Helena has more to do in this film than Indiana Jones. I didn't like her performance either. Barely anything worked for me in this film

Where did the $350M production costs actually go? You can hardly see it in the film. For comparison: With this budget Peter Jackson has created three masterpieces with 10 hours running time. Here we get a failed hero who is insulted, screwed over, cheated and left in the lurch by his goddaughter. What a piece of crap. Fortunately it failed at the box office.
@biganimefan84 Жыл бұрын
My ranking of the movies (worst to best) Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Temple of Doom Dial of Destiny Raiders of the Lost Ark The Last Crusade This did feel like an Indiana Jones movie to me. "Indy" did feel like himself and he did feel his age weighed down with grief. The goddaughter and her companion both were insufferable and badly written for the most part. I completely understand and respect Indy's desire to stay in the past. History and Archeology are his lifelong passions in every sense. Unfortunately, I never managed to have a good conversation with Indy's peer group (those born around the turn of the 20th Century), but I would imagine that the feelings of backlash from rapid technological advancement would have been immense for that generation. I do understand that aliens are most definitely a thing. It just doesn't work with this franchise. Especially not with an older George Lucas. Time Travel (into the past) however, does work imo due to the history/archeology core of the series/movies. The movie is badly written in places. The Neo Nazis being so flippin' trigger happy is just stupid. This movie was not needed nor was movie 4. But for a "final" outing for Indiana Jones himself, it was fun. 8/10

Saw the movie yesterday. I liked it overall, WAY better than Crystal Skull. It’s about on par with Temple of Doom for me (I have a lot of issues with doom). I’d give this one about a 7/10. It was better than I was expecting but I can’t deny it’s flaws.

What a bland and nonsensical movie. The visual effects and action were laughable in spots. The chase scene in Tangier was one of the most boring chase scenes I've ever seen and ending the climax with a punch line (no pun intended) sums this movie up perfectly. I know they wanted to redeem themselves for giving us a disappointing finale in Kingdom of The Crystal Skill but I actually prefer that ending a lot more.

I go back and forth on my rankings for this one. I think it’s either 3rd or 4th out of the 5 films but I need to sit in it. I love LOVE the story arc for Indy. I’m a sucker for catching up with our heroes decades later and finding them changed and in a dark place. Rocky did this, Luke did this and I loved it each time. Also I LOVE time travel. I mean this franchise has really checked off so many boxes and there is so much variety but dealing with age, time and History itself for the final film was just brilliant. Can’t say enough about this film I just adore it so much. Also I adore Helena so much. Please announce a Helena film Lucasfilm. I will be first in line.

I was satisfied with the time travel. The guy obsessed with the past finally gets to go back in time and witness the past. I’m pretty sure the dial works like the time turners from Harry Potter because they showed the watch and the propellers carved in the stone.
