Thank you for the movie review, Chris! I loved Gladiator 2, so well written and well done. It was so good as soon as I got home I pre-ordered the 4K Steelbook and seeing it again on Saturday. 4.5 out of 5.

I really liked this movie! Not quite as good as the original Gladiator but it was never going to be. Great action and I personally thought they did a great job of following up the original with the story line. I also thought Paul Mescal did a good job with his character.

I have that Wolverine Funko Pop which you have in the background, haha. Overall, I agree about the criticism of the emperors but loved the film!

I really liked this movie. It’s fun, entertaining and rousing when it needs to be. In the shadow of one of the greatest movies of all time, it pales, naturally. However, I do wish it was a tad better in and of itself.

disclaimer: I wasn't a massive fan of the original. I think it's a fine film but it's overrated. The characters are all a bit depressed and the action is often incoherent. However Russell Crowe's performance is great and everyone else also does a fine job in their roles. It has a great score by Hans Zimmer that really elevates the film and gives it dramatic impact. But to me it lacks the emotional punch of a somewhat comparable film like Braveheart. Given that I didn't adore the first film I didn't have high expectations for Gladiator II either. Overall I would say it is inferior in terms of characterizations, the performances, and the plausibility of the story. There was no time in Gladiator where you thought this could never have happened in real life. But there are several such moments in Gladiator II. This movie is much more over the top and almost comic book like at times. However I also kinda liked its unpretentiousness. One thing I liked more about this film is the overall look and production design, it somehow looked brighter and more appealing than the first film which was often a bit dark, and more of it took place in Rome compared to the first. There was more interesting details in the Roman sets, I particularly liked the entrance to Rome with the wolves feeding the baby which is a classic Roman symbol and I don't think it was there in the first film, and also the action scenes were more coherent and better edited than the first film. Overall I get the somewhat mixed reception the film has gotten, it's a bit of a mixed bag but I liked the fact it took itself less seriously than the first and really upped the ante in terms of spectacle in the Colosseum.

I haven’t watched it due to the negativity, but If you liked Paul Mescal, you should check out Aftersun, he honestly shows so much more of his acting talents in that movie.

Great review! Just wanted to point something out on your critique on not being able to care a lot about Lucius' personal motivation to go after Acacius. You mention that we had no time to develop any relationship with Lucius' wife, therefore, leaving a lack of caring for his reasoning for revenge. In the first movie, we had little to no relationship with Maximus' wife either, just that she was killed as well (very little screen time with her, and even less than with Lucius' wife in this movie). I agree that Maximus' family's death was way more impactful (maybe because a child was involved in that one), but the critique kind of becomes obsolete when you think back to how much of a relationship we had with Maximus' wife compared to Lucius'.

Ok maybe unpopular opinion but I was disappointed by Denzel bc I felt like he was just Denzel lol. Meaning he didn't change anything . No voice changes really nothing special.

The movie honestly felt like a cinematic fast food action film that requires turning your brain off. I had fun with it, but it was kinda forgettable.

Absolutely loved this movie, however I had three major issues with it (minor spoilers): 1. While the music wasn't bad, it wasn't the same without Hans Zimmer 2. Extremely historical inaccurate (with obvious things) 3. The CGI was kinda bad (mainly with those monkey baboon things towards the beginning)

so maybe its just because I watched inglorious basterds and Django the last couple of weeks… But hear me out Picture a Knights Tale (anarchistic sports movie) in the style of Tarantino about Gladiators during the period of maximum degeneracy and the fall of Rome.

I also felt it was rushed like there was no true back story to really any characters like one thing happened then next then next no good transitions.
