It's that time of year again, time for eggnog, caroling, and RANTING about the BREAKDOWN OF THE INTERNET! You know, usual holiday stuff. In all seriousness, though, for those who are new to my channels, once a year I like to delve beyond movies and video games and theorize about the platform I love and spent literally all of my time: KZbin. This year on Film theory the topic of the day is FAKE NEWS and why fake news and clickbait have been so prominent on KZbin this year. Seriously, they've been huge issues that everyone has been talking about and that every single one of you watching have been suckered into at one point or another. So where is it coming from? And more importantly, what do we DO about it? Well, I guess you clicked the video to find out... ;)

+1r5Droodle Actually, I would like to see that - MatPat looking at the validity and flaws of various conspiracy theories... I have followed a few over the years with an open mind - And some can actually be quite fascinating - They are never 100% accurate or Water tight... But there are areas that become so grey they COULD be fact! And sometimes, you do need an independent pair of eyes showing you what makes sense in a wild ramble to appreciate where a Theorist may be coming from and why they think the way they do... The thing with Conspiracy Theories is - Even if you manage to prove EVERY SINGLE THING WRONG - You are NEVER going to change the mindset of a believer... All you can do with them is examine and understand why they may see the world that way. It could actually be a fascinating channel.

Other people are doing that too much. The thing with Game Theorists and Film Theorist is that it has fictional things, but Conspiracy Theorists could get WAY too real. I suggest a Comic Theorists , and if you want an example of what kinds of theories he could do, he did some on Batman movies and Deadpool already. If you could make a Ironman suit IRL or is Venom real are better video ideas than if Bush did 9\11 or if reptilians shot JFK in my opinion.

KZbin is sorta broken in the way that most money is generated by Vloggers. Animators are now getting money cut, and some channels known for inappropriate content are being demonitized. But the BIG issue here is that Vloggers are making money but are also making bad reputations. Logan Paul was, and still is, hated globally for his actions in Japan, but he still gets money due to many views and this in turn gets KZbin more money because the ads are being played more. It sounds all good until more competitors come and make a better reputation for themselves. This reputation can be made better by paying animators or more dedicated work channels more than Vloggers. It may sound kinda biased coming off me but I don't make money anyway and I don't really care. However, because KZbin is paying more to Vloggers, I thought I could give my view on why it could damage KZbin. The new payment system by KZbin is paying less to those who do more. It also favours one very controversial category, that being Vloggers. Since they are getting paid more, other channels have had to resort to Patrion in order to make enough money. If a competitor came and paid more to more dedicated channels, those channels on KZbin might jump ship. If popular channels start to do that, more channels will follow. In turn, this would leave KZbin with Vloggers and that's it. It would ruin KZbin BIG TIME. Because it would only have Vloggers, no one would go on. Vloggers would also start on the competitors website and would become a new KZbin, only this one would've seen the effects of treating Vloggers better than more dedicated channels. Channels that are more costly need more money, Vlogging is cheap. However, don't get your hopes up, or down if you hate KZbin's new rules. This does seem like a far fetched Theory, but may happen, only in smaller quantities. KZbin DOMIMATE the online video market. They are VERY widely known. But if a competitor starts trending, it could do some serious damage, now more than ever! But hey, that's just a theory, a... hmmm... Marketing Theory...? Ah well, I tried.

However KZbin won't be "gone" but could possibly have a new competitor, which could damage their profits so... My anger towards KZbinRED has never and will never be about the idea of subscriptions replacing ads. There are 2 major issue I take with KZbinRED: 1. It was marketed as a pathetic attempt to compete with Netflix and others like it for the production of big budget content. 2. Initial region locking to the US, and a non-transparent method of selecting new regions to expand service to. 1. Sorry MatPat, but I dont want to watch a show like Game Lab (or Scare Pewdiepie, Prank Academy, etc). Its doesnt matter if its good or not because its not the type of content I personally am interested in watching. That doesn't mean its a bad show by any means, it just not the type of content I look to you for. If you want to make that type of content because you enjoy making it and have the capacity to do so go ahead Im happy for you, but dont expect me to watch it because its not what I want to watch. I subscribed to this channel and Game Theory for Theory Crafting content in this particular low-mid budget format. I dont want to watch "TV-quality" content on KZbin, I want to watch KZbinrs and the videos they make and engage in a the unique creator-user interaction that the internet allows that the TV show format simple cannot do. I cant relate to people in big budget content, but I can definitely relate to KZbinrs that record the voice-overs for their youtube videos in their closet because thats what they can afford with their budget. That is why I love things like Patreon, because it supports those types of content creators that made KZbin what it is and allows them to have some financial stability so that they can keep being the awesome creative people that they are. If KZbin didnt market KZbinRED as its response to Netflix like they did then I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. To be clear Im not opposed to KZbinrs making higher quality content, but Im not going to KZbin to look for that type of Content. If KZbinrs want to make that type of TV style content, go talk to companies like NetFlix like Bo Burnham and Miranda Sings have done. Some examples of KZbinrs that are doing higher quality content without sacrificing the style that they are known for or using KZbinRED grants are JonTron, Corridor, and Schmoyoho. 2. Unlike Netflix which restricts the content you can see in your particular country based on their legal ability to distribute that content in your country, KZbinRED just simply wasnt available outside the US for nearly a year after its launch. While Netflix also did this when they started, they were a brand new company with no existing infrastructure to deploy their services on. KZbin on the other hand has one of the biggest content distribution networks in the world, so they really had no excuse to not deploy KZbinRED world wide within the first few months of its US release. To make it all worse, when they finally did start expanding to other countries they did so in a very non-transparent manner. There was no timeline given as to when people in other nations could expect KZbinRED to be deployed in their nation, and no method was outlined by KZbin as to how they would decide where to expand the service to next. Instead of asking their users if they would pay for KZbinRED if it was available in their country, KZbin seems to have decided to expand to nations that have the largest user base. This is a stupid way of measuring potential for the service in other nations, because they didnt seem to have factored in user engagement per country but rather just total number of users per country, which means smaller nations that have high user engagement (and therefore would mostly likely be willing to help support the channels they engage with financially via KZbinRED) get ignore by KZbin, forcing those highly engaged users to resort to with suffering through ads or using an adblocker even though they know it will mean they KZbinrs they support will likely get less money. It also completely flys in the face with a long standing North American tradition between Canada and the US, where if one nation has a new up and coming company or service the first nation they expand to is their immediate neighbor. Netflix did this by expanding to Canada, and so have countless other companies over the years. KZbinRED broke this unwritten rule, with KZbin deciding that Brazil and Australia should get KZbinRED before Canada does. This may seem petty (and maybe it is a bit) but as a Canadian I take offense at being ignored like that by KZbin, and it really puts me off getting KZbinRED if it ever does expand to Canada (Google Canadians paying for American HBO Go if you want to see how far Canadians will go in this regard). KZbin has shown similar degrees of disrespect to other nations in the past (Ex: excluding Asian KZbinrs from KZbin Rewind until there was enough public outcry about it), so it really seems like KZbin doesnt care about anyone but the US even though a significant portion of their userbase is from outside the US now. Until KZbin explicitly addresses and resolves these 2 concerns I have about KZbinRED, it will continue to be a smear on their reputation in my opinion, and I will not be getting KZbinRED if it ever does come to Canada. I'll stick to an ad-blocker and Pateron until KZbin's attitude towards content creators and region locking(for lack of a better term) dramatically changes.

The Film Theorists Hey MatPat, I have a question for you, and I hope you see this. (I'm not holding much hope, but still thought I'd try) So I'm an aspiring film director. I love both watching and making entertaining things, hence why I watch your stuff. My question is: do you think there is a way to save the film industry? Meaning, I enjoy going to a movie theater, getting my popcorn and massive soda, and sitting down to watch an epic story told on a big screen. I love it, movie-going was like my whole childhood. But, I've noticed as of this year (again, 2016 being the sucky year it is) that there were even more bad movies than usual. And, in seeing this episode, I realized this is exactly why. The movie industry isn't about telling good stories, its about advertising. So my question to you is do you think there is a way to save the film industry and keep that amazing experience I had as a kid, or is it a doomed field that I should stop wasting my time and money trying to get into and is going to be swallowed up by Netflix soon (which I realize has a way better system for fostering stories than any other platform, hence why I seem to like almost all their original stuff on there). This is so true I noticed how many of the summer movies were not great BvS, Suicide Squad, X-Men Apocalypse, Ghostbusters, Independence Day: Resurgence, Jason Bourne. Many of theses were just about that adversitsing and playing on our nostalgia. But if you want to see more original stories we need to support those movies like The Nice Guys and Hell or High Water for example. Its the only way, but these movies tend to not get major releases which sucks.

This is why I've been a subscriber of game theory for 4 years and a subscriber of film theory since it's release. I'm not sure anybody will actually see this, but I just want to say thanks to MatPat and everybody that works on these theories. More often than not they provide a sensible theory of which the logic is easy enough to follow. But mainly they help me learn about things I never imagined even occurs in the world and helps to provide me a new perspective on seemingly endless topics. The content is always unique, creative, fun and perhaps most importantly thought provoking. So I would just like to say thanks to all the theorist that work on these channels, and am looking forward to hopefully another year of theories. Merry Christmas and happy holidays :)
