It depends on the quality of the source material and the blu ray transfer. Modern movies will generally look better on blu ray and in 4k but some older movies can actually look worse (increased grain in the picture, for example).

DVD has more options. More movies that have been reissued time and time again on that format, where on blu ray a lot of movies have only been released once, which creates a nightmare for collectors who got on the wagon late. I personally prefer to see Star Wars on DVD. No added audio and CGI that appears on the blu ray versions

I have a 1080p TV 40 inch Sony Bravia . I have connected to it Samsung 4K blu ray player. I purchased a copy of Blade on DVD it looks okay it could be better. I went to the library and checked out a copy of the Blu-ray version of Blade difference is huge. I guess upscaling can only do so much, from now on when I do buy movies that they're going to be on Blu-ray. I'm just spoiled and think not certain but think blu ray sounds better too.

I buy whichever has the most features. If the DVD and Blu Ray versions of a film or TV show have the same features, I'll get the Blu Ray since the video quality is going to be better, it makes sense since I have a Blu Ray player and Blu Ray's aren't always that expensive. It's nice to have an excuse for buying something on VHS and watching it on my VCR though, like a TV show or film I'm interested in which only got a VHS release, it has a novelty factor now and it's nice to still have these connections to the past.

Here are my thoughts on DVD vs Blu-ray: First, most major releases of new titles come in a Blu-ray / DVD / digital pack, or now with UHD Blu-ray, UHD / Blu-ray / digital. With that said, yes, people still have the option to buy just the DVD, but for a couple dollars more, buying the Blu-ray package makes more sense because you get both formats plus a digital copy for one price. If you're someone who doesn't need DVD, then there is the 4k UHD package that contains the 4k Blu-ray, and a standard Blu-ray + a digital copy that's also usually 4K (these days) depending on the studio. With that said I have some old TV shows that came on DVD, which were never HD, or widescreen to begin with. In this case, they will most likely not be released on Blu-ray, and if they were, it would probably be a waste due to the age and format of the content. So I would offer the thought, it depends on what type of content someone watches, as to what format they buy it on.

The quality of Blu Ray is undeniably better in almost every regard! The DVD looks really dated nowadays and looks fuzzy and nowhere near the Cristal quality of Blu Ray, why they haven't left yet is confusing. the only reason I would still get DVDs is if I bought it used for cheap and I didn't own the movie on Blu Ray and didn't want to pay for a Blu Ray version or maybe it's just a movie I don't care about as much, or if it's a compatibility reason, let's say you know you will not have a Blu Ray player if you are going somewhere. As for 4k it looks very good but it's not that much of a step up from Blu Ray besides the hdr, and as its expensive to buy a player at this moment, I am perfectly content with my Blu Ray movies as they still look really really good!

Facts. I'm not going back to standard 420p trash. In my opinion DVD looks almost as ancient as VHS was just with a little bit less fuzziness. Blue Ray has like no noticeable fuzziness even today.
@Alienkiwi730
@Alienkiwi730 7 ай бұрын
I don't really think the DVD is dated, it's the TV we're supposed to use them on that's now obsolete. DVD considerably looks great on a CRT TV, and also looks good on PC and Mac , and going for that jump from VHS back in the day was HUGE. But yes, DVD looks terrible on modern LCD and Plasma TVs, simply because it's not FOR those TVs

There is a lot of films that won´t make it to blu ray in the near future or maybe at all. There are still movies that were on VHS and still aren´t on DVD. And DVD on a Blu ray player looks still pretty good to me. So I would not get rid of DVD´s and I gladly buy them if they contain some rare film or some interesting extras or some kind of rare cut....there is still a place for DVDs. No problem.

Some ppl say Blu-ray’s are a marketing scam but some say it is actually worth it and really way better than dvd. I agree with both things actually. Both are a major improvement over VHS. The reason why Blu Ray hasn’t dethroned DVD like DVD has dethroned VHS is because DVD and Blu Ray both include clear digital video, and are good enough for simply just popping in a movie and playing it. (Obviously anything in 1080p will win because of extra skin clarity, even Amazon videos in HD) When he goes on about how muddy and distorted dvd is, it made me assume that this dude has never watched a VHS tape in his entire life. Seriously, those who complain about dvd should really try watching a VHS tape. I am grateful for my dvd collection, and as someone who has connected his DVD player to his 1080p TV, I notice no issue with the picture whatsoever.

Let me give you some real information DVD 720x480i / interlaced some TVs could do progressive scan witch is just a fancy term for having 720x4080p the P meaning full picture witch some say looked better. MPEG 2 video at 30FPs most DVDs could only have a bitrate of 900 MBPS AAC Dolby Digital or DTS sound usually topping out at 448 KBPS on Dolby and 728 KBPS on DTS with a sound mix of 5.1 DVD had 4.7 GB discs and 8.7 GB disc the 8.7GB discs were called dual layer. Most store bought DVDs were 8.7GB. Recorded media came in DVD -R DVD -RW DVD +R DVD +RW DVD -RDL DVD +RDL also DVD Ram Disc. There were also DVD Mini witch were small 1GB discs that are used for camcorders. Any DVD -R disc not burned in a computer had to be finalized to be played I other players special codes were written to the disc so any other player would read it like a DVD Rom. If your going to go into it go into it.

Do you remember way back in 2000 when Universal distributed movies with dedicated DTS only soundtracks and the big DTS logo across the cover. I THINK the DTS on these tracks chewed up a lot of data because they couldnt fit a Dolby track on the disc. But by Christmas there was a breakthrough in compression because Gladiator came out with both Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. Another one was Terminator 2 with Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES each supposedly having an extra channel. That disc was a first of its kind double sided dual layered disc DVD 18. Thanks for triggering some good memories👍

Funny you state sound, as you can tell the video quality difference from 1km away from your TV, but blindfolded you can't hear the difference. 384kbs Dolby 5.1 or 3 mbit DTS-MA both are 48khz/24 bit at least, and super clear. If there is any difference it might be from going from TV-built-in speakers to a half-baked 3.0 soundbar. With my 2 tower speakers, and 3 full range center/BR/BL speakers and serious AV amp, both discs sound exactly the same to me. Key is a proper center speaker. Once you have that, you won't go back. DVD had a discrete center channel as well.

I do it for several reasons. 1.Blue Ray's have DRM that requires player to always be updated and hooked to internet. Also them holding more data is there fatal flaw. Because there divits are so small for holding more data. They are extremely vulnerable to scratches. That's why they put a extra layer of protection on them. I learned this the hard way, and had to look up why it would not play with such a little scratch. I found out Blue Ray's will stop after smaller scratches then DVD's. 3. The person is correct you can't get all movies and shows on DVD. The reason is Sony owners them and is very strict who gets licenses to make them. Which also makes them expensive. DVD's on the other hand are open source which are cheaper. 4. Reason for me I don't notice the difference. Most stuff is getting put on blue Ray's which is not real 4k or 1080p

I used to buy DVD and Blu-Ray and the DVD was usually upscaled to 1080p so there wasn't much of a difference between the two. Then I hooked up the Blu-Ray player to my soundbar and changed the audio settings on the player to the highest quality. Oh boy there was the difference. Blu-Ray was the clear winner. I never heard my soundbar put out sound like that before. There is no streaming service that will give you sound like that. I always used my soundbar for movies but I just never had it hooked up properly.

Can't argue with the quality question, but the point for collectors is this: each new format ports over a smaller catalog of titles than the one before it. I'd say 1/4 to 1/3 of my DVD's are not available on Blu (few 'blockbusters') so if I upgrade I'll be left with a mish mash of DVD and Blu-ray. Plus, I dislike the combo-packs. Most of the films I'd buy as upgrages on Blu-ray would come with a DVD I already own. Sigh.

Personally I usually buy DVD's instead of Blu Rays. Don't get me wrong, if I see a movie in both options for the same price or only $1 - 2 difference I'll buy the Blu Ray. The main reason I still buy DVD's a lot though is because usually I'll walk into a store and see a movie with both options. As an example not too long ago I saw a movie with both a DVD and Blu Ray option. The DVD option was like $11 while the Blu Ray option was like $19, so I ended up going with the DVD. The main issue with Blu Rays that I've experienced is they tend to be close to double the price of DVD's and because of that I just buy DVD because it's cheaper. If Blu Ray lowers their prices, DVD will be a thing of the past. However, until Blu Ray lowers the prices I'll still purchase DVD's because I don't like spending almost double for the same movie.

+Premier Prep Hello there, which is better for older movies (early 2000) Should I purchase a $120 - $200 Blueray player along with those older movies altered with this blue ray format or Will an slightly above average player with a good TV work just fine? Specifically for physical copies of older movies, yet not looking like complete washed out trash?

+Premier Prep I ask specifically this because I saw a comment saying modern movies made with 1080p and 4k in mind will undoubtedly work well but upscaling older movies might actually look worse.
@PremierPrep

Well it depends on whether the movie was shot on film or digital. Which most were shot on film in the early 2000s. Film will most of the time look better on Blu-ray, especially 4K, because you'll be able to see the beautiful detail and grain patterns of the film more clearly at a higher resolution.

Hi, I haven't seen any of your videos in a while and just came back and saw you got a sponser! That's pretty cool! I feel like you could handle it better though... When you go into an advertisement, it feels very sudden, and it takes a second to adjust. I think it would work better if you had a quick transition of some sort (similar to how film riot does it) to say that the following is separate from what was just seen. The other thing is that there is a lot of advertisement compared to the amount of content in the video. This is something that's probably hard to take care of since you probably have specific things that you have to say for the advertisement, but I would keep it in mind when you're creating the episodes. Also, Blu-ray all the way!!! (I'm in complete agreement that DVD should die, and let Blu-ray take over)

If you really like the anime you should get the bluray, I absolutely buy all heavy cgi and animated movies on bluray because of the higher resolution of the image, especially if you ever get a projector and have a theater because it then just looks so clear. The thing I get frustrated about is there aren’t a lot of random tv series on bluray, but those are still good. My example would be The North Water or Frankenstein Chronicles.

I've finally rebuilt my movie collection from the old VHS days in DVD. I'm not switching to Blu-Ray. Plus, they are cheaper and I can get TV Seasons! I have been Collecting DVDs for 15-18 years. I used to have 6,000 movies in VHS, no TV shows. I currently have 3,500 movies, 500 TV Seasons. So, not as many movies, but lots of TV Seasons.

Dvd was a massive improvement on vhs. Are you old enough to have seen the birth of bluray and dvd? That would answer your question. Also Amazon hurt the Blu-ray industry which most the demand is on smart phone and tablet computers.

I have a blu ray player. But I still buy regular DVD. Mainly because I prefer the format that will play on my BR Player, my laptop, and my portable DVD player. Being honest, when I bought a combo pack, I can't say I saw much of a difference between the BR and the DVD. Granted, the BR Player was making the DVD look better. But I can't say I saw a huge difference. And I have no intention of replacing my DVDs with the BR equivalent. No. I don't think DVD is going away anytime soon.

Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray have Dolby Atmos (layered on Dolby TrueHD) and DTS:X (layered on DTS-HD Master Audio), both which blows boring old lossy 5.1 DVD audio out of the water. 4K Blu-ray has HDR10 and Dolby Vision which makes colors pop out much more than Blu-ray and DVD combined.

I am a collector of DVDs. I have a non-informed feeling it is on it's way out but that wouldn't necessarily be a sad thing. I never buy new releases on dvd so if the production were to stop tomorrow I would still have a life time of collecting dvds released until that point. For the same reason: the quality of the picture isn't a priority for me since it's mostly movies from a time before the HD revolution. But honestly: I never started collecting BRs mainly because of the different look and size of the cover, it made my dvd- shelfs look all messy :D All and all it looks like all kinds of physical media is on it's way out. Streamed media will probably rule them all in the end. But, again, that don't matter much for a collector...as long as we hold on to our units and collections :D

@@strawberryswisher. Yes, streaming is becoming garbage. From the 150 BR discs I have, there are 40 available in streaming, on 5 different platforms. When I buy them on Apple I can get quite a bit more, nearly 100 of the titles, but it does not feel good to be dependent on an internet connection to access it. It would really help though if the EU would ban DVD's, that cleans up the physical disc business to a single format to focus on. They made so many mistakes when inventing the DVD, we should quit the garbage format ASAP. They are made for CRT's. Who watches movies on a CRT nowadays? I also see TBP becoming more popular again, as law enforcement on downloading torrents is close to non existent, and streaming service becoming a joke.

Sounds like that may be due to your network connection. If your connection is weak, Netflix reduces the resolution and bitrate - in some cases to SD and bitrates below 1000 which naturally can't compete with a DVD since their bitrates are rarely below 5000. By the way, I've compared several movies on both formats on my 49" TV and Blu-ray always outclasses DVD.
