If you are using Polyfil as your initial contact point, no debris will make it to your triple-layer of foam padding. It is redundant. The foam padding itself is a perfectly functional biological filter as well.

I thought that, surely triple foams then polyfil

we can only assume by 'first' he meant something other than first contact filtration media..very odd and no clarification in 2 years

Hi Thanks for the information on your video, please I want to ask you about your opinion of using ceramic rings as mechanical filtration and no foams pad except one fine white pad . I use eheim mech in an eheim Professional 3 Xl filter? Is it better or shall I use pads insted ? Thanks

Hi Thank you for this nice information. Please advise me if I use lava rocks on my external filters . Does it has any effect on the water parameters PH and GH ? And does lava rocks can achive full cycle? Since I have discus fish and water parameters is important as you know. Thanks a lot.

I do believe the concept of ceramic rings to eliminate or reduce amonia, but!! Is crucial to know the amount of ceramic rings in the cannister and the size of it.

Good subject Phil. Very informative. Healthy fish starts with good filtration. Cant wait to see fridays 'five 4'.

Thank you! You couldn't be more accurate...the fish will thrive if we create the right environment for them. Apologies that the five4friday did not feature what you were probably looking forward to...this week I won't disappoint! 🙏👍😊

Hey, no problem Phil. I have been saying, 'it will be done this week,' for the last month. You cant rush it. I have my tank now....Love it.. Looks great. Filling it now from the RO unit...Slow even with an added pump. Half of my aquascape is floating :) So ill be back to the drawing board to try add weight to the wood to hold it down, so it stays where i want it.... Delays Delays I cant stand it. I'll make a small video and post you the link when its finally set up and cycling.

Haha, sounds like you've been as frustrated with my tank as I have. We're there now though. They are frustrating things but oh so worth it when it's all set up as you want it. Great news your tank is there, look forward to seeing the video. Try weighing down the wood with rocks etc and then eventually it will naturally sink. I'm sure it will look fantastic when you're finished. 👍🏼

Please watch the pond guru if you want to know how to set up a filter correctly. Your filter floss comes after the coarse,medium and fine pads. Then your bio media before any chemical filtrationat the end.

I run a sps tank with no isues but has sump etc. My living room tank tho which is several years old, with filtering worms etc has a HOB skimmer, floss and sponges and although the fish aare fine I keep losing shrimp and snails. I have no room but fel I need to move to a modern extrnal filter perhaps just to lower nitrates a little.. maybe

The surface area is in the internal structure of the sponge not what you perceive to be the surface had they filled in your "valley's" you'd have about 33% more total surface area.

It's not called "surface" for nothing if you stretch out the peaks and troughs then ask yourself what you get

Plastic balls are no good as a media same with ceramic rings if there smooth type
@Evanelkgrove
@Evanelkgrove 2 жыл бұрын
Dude, the peaks and valleys do not create additional surface area. The emptiness between the peaks is less surface area, not more. It just looks cool. Maybe it increases flow rates through the sponge but it does not increase surface area. A solid block of foam with the same thickness would create more surface area than peaks and valleys. Think it through

Why waist money on media make a slow moving plenem with an undergravel filter non clumbing non scented kitty litre 100% baked clay and red clay mixed in topped with gravel or aquasoil or something else but not sand add a ano USB air pump cut the lift tube to 4" it converts ammonia nitrite nitrate ad phosphate meaning u won't have algae outbreaks ur water ill be as healthy as it gets and if u plant in the plenem plants grow like mad the ironing the red clay not only feed the bacteria but it keeps red plants red its the best type of filtration u can use by far u can still use other filters on top of this if u want but its not needed it's the cheapest filtration but youv to buy a undergravel filter a small nano USB air pump kitty litre red clay and gravel to top if u even wanna top It or you can make bcbs and add them to a canister does same thing if ur not wanting an anoxic filtration system then best using biohome ultimate or biogravel to convert nitrates
