Great video Dave. I carry a few coffee filters in my pack. Can be used to assist in filtration, tinder and makeshift toilet paper or napkins if needed. I also have carried fish tank filters. The kind that open like a pouch that hold the charcoal packs. Makes a filter bag of sorts.

When I was a kid some friends and I were playing war in the woods. We had ran out of water in our canteens and found a little creek that looked as though the water was clean. We filled up and kept on drinking. Needless to say for the next few weeks all three of us were sick as dogs with uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea. The sickest I've ever been in my life! Def learned a lesson the hard way, LOL. So folks pay close attention to these vids...it's no joke at all!!

I've done a similar setup with a 2 liter plastic bottle. cut the bottom out, turn it upside down then go, from the bottom, pebbles, sand, charcoal, and spagna moss. Spagna moss does have some antiseptic properties, but you should boil to.

This is important to me, since I live in an area that gets 66 inches of annual rainfall and 168 days of measurable precipitation per year. Fire isn't always an option, and neither is boiling water. Thanks Dave.

I always carry the sawyer gravitational water purifier n the steripen uv purifier. My family n i have drank from swamps rivers n streams using this system. But i also carry the materials for primitive filtration n purification. Thank u dave for sharing ur knowledge.

I've been grinding charcoal really fine. I like to see the difference between the ideal and emergency situations. I almost didn't watch this one.But, I'm glad I did.

Kraven-- Dave has stated in a couple of vids, the straw filters are disposable, single event filters. They are good for 50 gallons. Use them in an emergency then toss them and get another.

Great video. Another way to possibly get your three tiers would be nestled perforated cans..such as soda can, soup can, coffee can. Like you said, this isn't fool-proof, but much better than nothing.

Something I never understood... I don't understand why people don't just carry a good cheese-cloth. It's just the as a bandana only it filters everything bigger than 50nm. You can get Spirulina cloth that is high quality and filters everything down to 30nm. The only thing smaller than that is polio but pretty much anything else will be filtered. You still need a pre-filter for the dirt, like you showed but it's a great thing to carry... I think I'll just make a video on it!

Thanks for the reply Brother....Tentsmiths has close to what I am looking for in a canvas/oilskin tarp. I just prefer a tarp to a tent because of the versatility and options the tarp gives me and dont mind the extra weight of the canvas because of it's durability.

Highly informative. I would think that you'd want to use this in conjunction with the iodine or chlorine tablets, as particulate matter can lessen their effectiveness.

Egyptian wells help with the removal of chemical's before you start the filtering process. Were I live there some spots you can drink water right from the ground & there are some spots that are heavy with chemical pollutants. There are also different bug species to look for that are good indicates of chemical pollutants free water... lolz I don't know the name of them though.. Only what they look like.

So Dave, do I understand that this would be for suspected chemical or heavy metal contamination and when water is turbid BUT still plan on boiling.... if at all possible, to avoid micro-organisms? I guess it would be the very rare occasion indeed.

Dave, don't know I you got the reply on this from yesterday, but look into the Livesaver bottle. Seems to get damn near everything (including viruses & some heavy metals- maybe even chemicals)! Very simple, works for 1000s of liters of water & you can replace the filters. It's pricey, but maybe it's a good one-shot expense to make (about $150). It seems you can just fill it, pump it & drink it. P.S.- What do you think of coffee filters for the kind of filter in this video?

Dave are the coals left from a fire the same as standard charcoal? I would have thought charcoal would have to be made like "char-cloth" in a sealed container and heated not burned. I realize this is an emergency technique, but have always wondered about charcoal. This video seemed to be a good intro to the question. Thanks for all.

Dave if you were in da U.P. and on some lakes that were river and spring feed. If the water was clear enough to see the bottom at least 6 foot down. Would you filter, boil, neither or both? Go 43.

Dave, I live about 6 miles (as the crow flies) from the Ohio River (Cincinnati suburb). What do you know about how contaminated is that water? Using the techniques you have taught (or berkey-system filter which I have) could I clean up Ohio River water enough for if SHTF? I know how to kill pathogens but the chemical pollutants might be hard to deal with, PCBs and whatnot. Can you advise? And would you eat the fish or are they poisoned also? Thanks!

Dave I seen a thing online where someone used a new lamp wick and stuck it in a container of murky water and then put the other end in another container below that one to catch the filtered water. "I use that term loosely" I am thinking this is mainly to make the water just more clear whats your take on it? also could charing the end(s) of the wick help it any?
