Dear Pricejb1, I cannot thank you enough for posting the English and the Latin so I can know both what the words are and what they mean. You have been a blessing to me and probably to numerous others who did not listen to our counselors in junior high school about the importance of taking Latin.
@Rocky-fv9ey11 ай бұрын
@@raywilliams6896You mean at the sed nomini part? I was sure that‘s what they were singing. You‘ll never believe this but 50 years ago, ouch, I was part of a trial to bring back Latin as a "living language" (didn‘t know it had died) but as a consequence we weren‘t taught the grammar that surely is the whole point of learning Latin? It would have been so useful subsequently with German and other languages. And as a chorister, singer, musician. I changed schools after 2 years so don‘t know if the grammar would ever have been formally taught. All I can remember after all these years are these little simple story books in Latin. I think the idea was we would just absorb it. Well I certainly didn‘t! I‘m very grateful to you for explaining. 😊

+Steve Roberts Yes, Patrick Doyle's 'Non nobis' for Branagh's _Henry V_ is a great and beautiful piece of music. On first hearing it many years ago when the film debuted, I assumed it was a traditional hymn from long ago. Amazing that it's contemporary. After a death in the family, the melody just came to me, from out of the blue. So I learned the latin words and sang it over and over, for my lost one and for all those who grieve. God bless Patrick Doyle and all music makers. God bless us, every one!
@joelwillems4081 Жыл бұрын
@@GildaLee27 It is based on a short Latin hymn used as a prayer of thanksgiving and expression of humility. There is a simple chant of it but not this melodious, multi-harmony in-the-round version of it. Very reminiscent of Handel's The Messiah.

I'm English, and Agincourt and Henry the 5th brings me here. And this piece always strangles me with emotion. But my Grand-fathers were at Mons, Passchendaele, and other places in WW1; and also at the Desert Rat campaigns with Monty in WWII. My uncles were Paratroopers who applied for SAS positions and my father was in the royal Hussars during his National Service. One thing I learned from them all: War destroys and makes us less human. It's something designed by governments that will always employ the working classes to do their bidding on a whim, at the cost of the decimation of their hamlets, towns and cities, without sending their own flesh and blood into the fray. Those mentioned in this note are long past, but there will always be something in me that will take up the gauntlet, if pressured, to fight on the side of righteousness. For my own risked their blood for such causes, and life altering endeavors. But all that aside..there is something in this that stirs the cockles of my breeding. It is there. It is in me...
@jbprice3872 жыл бұрын
The film of Henry V, which this was written for, recognises the dehumanising impact of war. As the King is lauded by the soundtrack, we see him struggling with the impact of the death all around. The appropriateness of the glory of the music is questioned by the visual images.

This should be the anthem to christen the new year for all those of the faith. 2020 has been the year of loss, pain, challenge, and reckoning for us all, and yet, we should remember that all things work together for the Glory of God. That the past might be ashes for many of us, but that the burning of what we loved was all along a reminder to us to return to our First Love - Jesus. That only He is sufficient and only He can give us meaning. All else is futility. 1) Sola Gratia 2) Sola Fide 3) Solus Christus 4) Sola Scriptura 5) Soli Deo Gloria

Salmol 115
