This was a spectacular series. My dad had a 70’s beetle when I was a kid. I remember it having the four vents on the back engine cover. I loved it. By the time I was old enough to buy one for my first car (16) they were all rusted out where the struts were mounted in the frunk area. I recently saw this model on Amazon and want to recreate how I remember it, color and all. It was dark blue with white interior. I’ve appreciated your journey as I haven’t built a model since I was a young teenager. I won’t be using an air brush, so wish me luck! Paint is an issue as it’s winter in my part of the country so I think that’ll be the hardest part.

Nice! Thank you for sharing:-) As for an airbrush I do recommend them but just for base coating and primer. They've got some self-contained battery models out there these days that are not bad for both quality and price.

Nice job for your first model. Looks good. Lots of modelers have started using a medium viscosity, oderless CA glue such as BSI's SuperGold+ for installing windows, clear parts and small parts. The "Oderless" part is important as standard CA glues will fog clear parts, and at least BSI's SuperGold+ will not. One trick is to hold the window in place and applying a small drop of the glue at the corners and let it wick around the window. I use Evergreen cement for the windows (got it at Hobby Lobby.) It is a PVA glue so can be wiped off before it sets up with a wet Q-Tip if it gets on the glass. Welcome to the wonderful world of modeling.

Thank you for this video, I’m 50 years old and my wife got me a kit for my birthday, I’ve watched hours of KZbin of guys making models perfectly and then I found your video that has all the good and the not so good, the paint that’s over the edge the glue that’s on you and the car the fiddly bits that stick to you and don’t stay in place first time and I realised it’s not just me, I’m not useless I just need practice, so thank you so much for your 100% honest video of you enjoying your hobby and I hope I can build my model as good as you do

I ended up picking up a little bottle of Zap Canopy Glue at a little hobby shop just south of Nashville. It's just the right consistency, so it levels out and disappears into the seam it dries.

I think you did a fine job! Common household bleach will strip chrome plating quickly. Wear old clothing and rinse the part well.

Nice Beatle! Maybe use PVA glue for the clear parts, the windshield wipers got mounted the other way around that's why the one on the driver side doesn't fit right. Really enjoyed the vid! Love that kit!

There is a product called Bare Metal Foil. It is an ultra thin aluminum sheet (like gold leaf) with an adhesive backing. It is very useful for applying “chrome” trim on your dash panel in the opening minutes.

i freaking love the blue. have seen some where people just pollished the sun right on the car. this looks more to the original. i recently started plastic models to if you have a thrift store near you those are good ways to find old american cars. in my country those those things are nowhere to be seen.

Thrift stores are getting smart, especially Goodwill. Check Shopgoodwill.com they have a category devoted to just models. There are a bunch of companies out there similar to shippn.com that will ship your stuff about anywhere.

1968 only driver’s mirror in EU, passenger appeared later in the 80’s. Also wipers are UK style, but steering is EU

Super Glue can be used to weld painted parts. IMO, this work around should not become habitual, but used only when necessary. Use tape or Liquid Mask or scrape the paint off with your blade.

How did you get your paint to not have streaks? Also, in the interior section with the steering wheel, how did you put that together? That is the one part I'm stuck on.

I won't lie to you, that's a battle I'm still in the midst of. The higher the quality of the paint you use helps, but preparing the surface is the key. Also, using an airbrush on the larger surfaces will leave a smoother finish.

All the parts come out of the injection mold with a little film of oil on them that needs to be washed off but after that I just clean up the any flashing or injector pen marks with 600 or better sandpaper and then prime it. Rattle can or airbrush, either one's good. Go in thin light coats just until you get it covered so not to cover up any details.

Hi, in my opinion there are some errors; the internal details have some paint smudges, and unfortunately you can see the brushstrokes internally. Not very well done.

LOL you not looking too close that thing's chop full of errors runs and drips. In fact I had to shoot it from this side because I broke the mirror off on the other side. Still had an absolute ball building it though!!🤣🤣
