Helpful. And the comparison validates some of my issues with Resolve Magic Mask, namely mask errors that require careful review to identify and then to correct. I have actually given up on Resolve Magic Mask for most jobs but would gladly revisit it when it is ready for prime time. Thanks.

the main advantage of magic mask is it in fusion page and you can control it way better there like for example if it is selecting unwanted object just track the object in other node and remove it from original mask

Thanks Phillip, nice video. I'm no means skilled in Resolve but I've used Magic mask several times and I've got so used to it, it really doesn't worry me whether another editor is faster or better at applying the mask. It's what you find the software can do as a whole and after many years using AE, I've found Resolve is easier and better for my style of editing imo.

I probably didn't do a good enough job showing A/B comparisons in the video, but in the end, both masks are pretty comparable. The end result in FCP had some glitches as well so I didn't mean to imply that it did a perfect job

Seems like the Final Cut Magnetic Mask is quite superior over the Magic Mask in Resolve in many different ways. I hope the Blackmagic can improve theirs in the next few updates so it can keep up, not only in speed but also quality.

I didn't do a good enough job comparing the final result and maybe implied that FCP did a much better job with the final mask, when it had some glitches as well. It is faster, that's for sure

The magic mask in fusion is way faster and better, that’s what you have to compare it to, not the one on the color page.

+1, exactly. the edit page seems to focus more on masking soft for color grading without hard edges by default or sonething. to do a chroma key replacement style mask the fusion page works much better. i dont know the technical reasons why but they behave noticably different

I'll try it out and if I find it to work any differently, I'll make another video. I saw Jake Felzien's comparison to the Magnetic Mask and Fusion Magic Mask and it seemed comparable to what I got in the Color Page

One thing about Magic Mask is on my Macbook Air M1 8GB Ram is when I finish a mask and then go back to edit page and then move around the clip the magic mask disappear and I have to reanalyze in color page or fusion page. For the mask to stay I have to render in place to Apple ProRes 4444 (so that it allows alpha output). It's quite annoying to do all of these extra steps so for me Final Cut Pro seems like a nice option now for quick and easy edits.

Easing provides a gentle curve to the animation at the beginning and/or end so it has a more natural start and stop

So given this new functionality, is it worth getting CineStudio for Final Cut? Can we surface track in Final cut? I do have Resolve Studio and I am really stuck as to whether to dedicate to davinci resolve or stay with what I know (basics) on Final Cut and get Cinematic Studio.

Final Cut does have a surface tracker. It was added a couple updates ago. It works pretty well but I haven't tried CineStudio. Resolve is great, it has all that stuff, too, but requires that you get a bit comfortable in Fusion to access it.

@ I don’t because my primary computer is a Windows PC. I’ve never used a Max so I can’t say how much faster they are than a Pro but it really depends how much money you’re making from your computer. I think there is substantial diminishing returns on spending on an editing rig vs performance benefit. And at the rate Apple drops new hardware, it hurts fast to over spend

The best masking model is metas sam2 and its open source, with the license allowing for modification and commercialisation. All davinci has to do is integrate it because magic mask is comparatively atrocious Need more people telling them that magic mask is inferior for them to care enough

Good video. I'd rather be punched in the face then use Final Cut Pro. Davinci will figure it out. They always do.
