It is written in a few books, that Sandy Roth, who had been in the Ford station wagon, following Dean maybe a half-mile behind, came upon the accident, with Bill Hicks in the station wagon, driving. According to Hicks, he ran up to Dean, who had been trapped in the driver's seat, when his foot got entangled with the pedals. Hicks claims to have held Dean in his arms, as Jimmy exhaled his last breath. Dramatic stuff!...But Roth, who had actually taken a couple of photos immediately after encountering the crash, never did mention Hicks being in his photos. Roth did say, that he decided to trash the photos he took of Dean in the car. He thought it was too gruesome for public consumption. Hicks commented frequently, that he had noticed that Dean's neck felt like it was broken, and he also had sustained a partially bashed in left forehead. Strangely, Dean never was given an autopsy--and the ambulance drivers had stolen money from his wallet! That was pretty much standard practice in rural situations. The person laying on the ground, seriously injured, was Rolf Wutherich. Years later in Germany, a drunk Wutherich ran his Honda Civic into a telephone pole, killing him.
