Southgate simply meant that he missed 2021 Kalvin Phillips, who was amazingly effective for England. But that guy has disappeared, his career basically ruined by going to Man City, where he's barely played for them, and probably ended up depressed, out of shape and (as we've seen at West Ham) out of form. Honestly I have no idea because I thought our team would be ready, would have that mentality to score goals and sweep easily towards the final. But we didn't, even with the return of Kanté we've been underwhelming this entire tournament... Every french kept saying, "Oh yeah, we're gonna top our group because it's one of the easier ones", but we couldn't even score a single goal against Netherlands when to my knowledge we have beaten them before... Poland gave us a draw which without counting the penalties was a goalless game, and we only beat Austria because of their OG... Seriously, how did we get to the Ro16 this easily? After that was Belgium. Now I'm not trying to say Belgium isn't a bad or a good team when they played us these last couple of years, but I still feel like they performed better than us. We've been playing bad and completely missed all of our chances, had to get an OG AGAIN to advance now to face Portugal... I don't think we'll get further than that though. Portugal has had a better performance than us in group phase, not only that but they also beat us AT HOME in Euro 2016. BUT, you can't disregard the fact the France squad was different back then, yeah now we have Mbappé and stuff but we're still struggling to score a single time. Makes me really question Deschamps' choices, because everyone here in France has been waiting for him to put Barcola in the starting XI (he did with Poland which was a really good performance from Bradley!! He shouldn't have subbed him off in my opinion) I don't know how this quarter final will play out. I have a gut feeling that Ronaldo will score and get Portugal the win. That's just how it's gonna play out, and it will at least let the French team get their stuff back together so they can get better for the next World Cup. The only good players I've seen so far have been our guardian Maignan, Koundé, Kanté, Saliba and Théo Hernandez. Other than that we've been very poor. Best of luck to both teams though, hopefully we'll see some ACTUAL goals this Friday

Portugal doesn't play well against teams that park the bus. You saw that against Czechia and now Slovenia. Turkey played more attacking football, gave them space, and they won 3 - 0.
