Final Fantasy XI, also known as Final Fantasy XI Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), originally developed and published by Squaresoft and then published by Square Enix as the eleventh main installment of the Final Fantasy series. Designed and produced by Hiromichi Tanaka, it was released in Japan on May 16, 2002, for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows-based personal computers in November of that year. The game was the first MMORPG to offer cross-platform play between PlayStation 2 and PC. It was later released for the Xbox 360 in April 2006. All versions of the game require a monthly subscription to play.
The story is set in the fantasy world of Vana'diel, where player-created avatars can both compete and cooperate in a variety of objectives to develop an assortment of jobs, skills, and earn in-game item rewards. Players can undertake an array of quests and progress through the in-game hierarchy and through the major plot of the game. Since its debut in 2002, five expansion packs have been released along with six add-on scenarios. Each expansion pack and add-on brings a new major storyline to the Final Fantasy XI world, along with numerous areas, quests, events and item rewards.
In 2015, Square Enix released the final main scenario for Final Fantasy XI titled Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. Final Fantasy XI became the final active server on the PlayStation 2 online service. Support for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions was ultimately ended on March 31, 2016, leaving only the PC platform playable. A mobile client for the game was under development by Square Enix in collaboration with Korean developer Nexon, using Unreal Engine 4, but was cancelled in late 2020. A spin-off mobile game, Final Fantasy Grandmasters was released on September 30, 2015. As of September 2020, a new, episodic story series titled The Voracious Resurgence has since been added to the game. The storyline concluded in June 2023. In May of 2022 rumors had circulated that FFXI may soon be shutting down. Yoji Fujito released a statement noting that this was not the case and users should not worry about the services being shut down any time soon.

Hi - Aerec here! The reason why character creation is done via the website isn't due to playonline, its due to the team creating a third color hairstyle option for every face in the game. Since there isn't a way to insert this into the original FFXI character creation in the game client, we had to setup the website to allow players to be able to choose the new option. I played in the golden age and have multiple life long friendships. We sound like old dudes telling war stories lol. Modern games and mmos you can straight up ignore people. I started FF14 year before last , I completed everything the following year, and talked to no one other than a little chat for some of the harder boss battles for tactics. Its basically pointless as to why its even multiplayer. I played ffxi for damn near 10 years and still didn't finish everything.

Yes FFXI was my first mmorpg I remember watching the live cam of the in game in Japan and was so hyped. I would literally go to work and immediately get on the game, I then only slept for 4 hours every work day just to play it lol. Luckily I had a little brother who I would let farm for me when I was at work or he's camp the Valkerm Emperor nm :)

Ever since I finally left FFXI in 2010 for the release of FFXIV 1.0, I have missed this game. I had all jobs to 75 and merited, had great gear from HNMs and Dynamis. Now it's just a bitter memory of having sunk thousands of hours over 5 years. I can't play it again 😔

XI was my first big MMo that I got hooked on... I was 13 and am now 35... I haven't played in a years, but in it's prime, back when I played this game from 13-20, I met some of the most amazing people and friends, and made some of the most memorable gaming memories ever. I often think about it and how much I miss those days.. I know XI wouldn't work today, but maaaaaaan. Nothing will ever come close to what XI gave me. If they remade XI with new graphics, I would quit everything and jump back in.

I played Horizon at launch. It was like reliving the original launch back on the PS2. I was giddy seeing tons of people standing around Valkurm Dunes. I remember during the Horizon launch week, the server crashing because they were reach 5k players at a time and Valkurm Dunes being absolutely overan by players and just that zone was crashing so often. I loved it. I was one of the first players to get unlock and level a Bard so groups were begging to party with me. I got to 70 by the 2nd month of release with my Bard, but fighting Mat for the LB4 quest to get past 70 demorialized me. After gathering all the items to fight Mat, then losing and having to do it all over again killed me. For the next 2 months I simply played other jobs & made money gathering. I am debating going back but I quit cold turkey just because I was one again addicted. I was playing 40 hours a week on average while having my 40 hour a week job, not to mention other household responsibilities. My RL friends were texting me wondering what I was up to, I was gaining weight, I often had headaches because I was barely sleeping 4 hours a night, and was generally ignoring responsibilties. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I truly relived my teenage years playing XI. I debate going back now but I have made many RL life improvements like getting in shape, playing other games, becoming more social again, but they itch to go back is soooo strong. Some people suggest playing a modern MMO where you can simply hop in & out within short play times, but modern MMOs like XIV just don't do it for me. They feel aracdey & plastic to me. My achievements really don't feel like accompliments.

Wild how much this relates. When I stopped playing XI years ago, I missed it dearly. Still do, and I played back when it first came out. I was always afraid that if I went back I would once again slip into that hole of devoting hours to play, and barely any to RL. My character was Verien. Almost every job was 75, high level cooking and fishing, and some other crafts. But damn if I didn't love it and make good friends and have fun. Good memories!

I found the server about 3 weeks ago and I was so happy. I was an original launch player, being 18 when it was released. I had the biggest grin on my face when I booted it up. It feels so good and hit me right in the nostalgia feels. There are tweaks to it so it isn't the exact some experience, but I'm still having fun. Some stuff I'm not a fan of, and some QoL stuff is yet to be added, but overall I'm very happy with the server and have lost myself to the game all over again...

ffxi was one of my first ever mmo's back in the early 2000's until wow TBC pulled me away around 2007. fast farward to about a year ago, a buddy of mine sent me the launch trailer for horizonxi, now i have 6x 75's and play the game every day lol. enjoy the ride, have fun :)

Complete Chains of Promathia Missions for OP Ring + Sea/Limbus Access 9. Collect Ancient Beast Coins from Limbus for upgrading gear +1 of Artifact Armor 10. Join a Linkshell that does Dynamis/Sky/Limbus 11. Level a Craft to 100 and sub crafts 12. As you can see from my pic, I loved and will always love FFXI, I just don't have the time to dedicate to it anymore. I did solo BST to 50 on HorizonXI but eventually just got burnt out. Having played retail, I know the amount of work required ahead of me and it's really daunting to think about lol But it was super cool to revisit, seeing everyone running around doing low level stuff and having fun.

That's why I stopped playing as well. I finished so so so many hours of quests and side quests, relic gear and weapons on retail. I'm not really willing to do all that all over again haha. But Horizon is fun if you miss the community aspect. I prefer to play solo these days.

The game when it first came out was very tough, people would get mad at other players, so they would round up all kinds of mobs, bring them to you and your party, die, then the mobs would start attacking you and your party, SE eventually made it so players couldn't monster kill you. Dying would also cost you XP, I've seen players reach lvl 75, then get killed right after and then a "level down" would appear over their head hahah

i remember back in the day when i first played this. me and my friends (plus others) got to crossing the sea. everyone was so excited!....... then skeleton pirates attacked and we all huddled together in a corner like literal chickens (i am not kidding there was audio of some of my friends almost doing that worried chicken noise unintentionally) one of them swung its blade at us and it was me that was hit. as soon as the established target was made (me) everyone one else ran.... no help.... and the rest you can guess.....turned up on the dock dead and dropped from what ever number level i was.... generally back then it was a mood of better you than me haha

Having been a level 75 back in the pre WotG era is a badge of honor in the community. My first "max level" took 6 months. The level cap increase quests were absolutely brutal on some jobs and some quests you'd be locked out a day or even a week if you failed.

I wouldn't mind a 99 cap in the classic era. Also give some solo options with DNC and those books. It was still a grind, it just gave you something to do when you couldn't find an exp party. Just leave out the Abyssea speed leveling and bonuses.

I might make an account and play. I played retail at launch on my PS2 with the network adapter and the logitech controller with the keyboard in the middle (man I wish I still had that thing lol), and to this day, it is the single best MMO experience I have ever had. Nothing else even comes close.

​@@VagrantVideos the 2 offer different experience. Retail is a solo game like FF12, private is an old school mmorpg. My main issue with retail is that the staff don't try to fix the game anymore. Many old content are broken like besiege or campaign and would need level cap. There is no official HD texture pack, no real new expansion, no classic server. They just let the game slowly dying.

When quality of life improvment became to come in 2013 in retail it was cool, it was making the game easier to play. But there now too much in retail. Teleport is so cheap that airship and boat are useless, mount are so easy to gain that chocobo raising and location are useless. Trust was great when it was introduce because it was not really fully for solo. It was limited to 3 characters and you couldn't have more than one until level 15(and kupipi was the only healer available for starter, so you need to travel and play the quest to gain them). So it was not game breaking. But now, you have 3 at the start and can gain 3 just after the start of the quest. And you can increase the amount of trust to 5, killing the multiplayer, but also the adventure companion quest

I remember the addiction that is FF11 started off with a maxed out BLM, next it was DRK and RNG, by the time I had 4 or 5 maxed out I realized I needed tons of Gil. Spent hours in a cave fishing a pond for angel skins trying to get money to max out PUP. But then you realize that you could make more money with THF. The more angel skins I got the more my job addiction grew until I had 9 maxed out jobs. This game was a full time job but my god was it a once in a lifetime experience.

The end game is inaccessible. I remember quitting just before wotg release because wanting to do limbus, sea gods, Bahamut, kings, etc was a pipe dream. Not to mention doing a relic, only takes an entire LS a whole year to make a single one.. and your like 15th in the que lol. The most I could hope for from my time getting up at 2am to do dynamis for 4 hours on a work night was to maybe get one armour drop a month. I did have some moderate fun doing sky though, although still the loot was few and far between. I have been playing retail for the past 2-3 years and the endgame is still very inaccessible, you need multiple jobs with R15 rema for anyone to consider you. Tell a newb what they need to do to make a rema and see if they log in again.

Ffxi is peak of what ff should be. A big cast of players/party, tons of variety of challenging content, tons of customization, big dangerous world to explore, etc. Chains of promathia is regarded as one of the best expansion. You needed a good static to beat the main story line. These days games are made too easy and simple to cater to the masses.

Does Horizon have the old HNM world spawning system and the insane spawn time windows? I wasted so much time sitting around I dragons aery waiting for fafnir/nidhogg

Joined at launch with the hopes of experiencing this game again with an rp linkshell. The ls I joined almost immediately died lol. Just reinstalled it today because this game will not release its grip on me. I'm disappointed the ls recruitment channel seems to be gone from the official discord. What is the best way to search for a new ls?

I started playing FFXI in March 2004 with the PS2 NA release. I found one of the worst parts was the Japanese players. They never wanted to help NA players (even those who could read and write Japanese). I was on Caitsith and felt half the players didn't want anything to do with me or my friends. The darkest day came when my LS disbanded overnight. The LS was BROTHERHOOD, and most players knew each other from work. Our White Mage was CRASHER, and something went on at work. Everyone just stopped playing, and then the pearl broke one day. I miss CRASHER and BROTHERHOOD. If anyone out there was a member of BROTHERHOOD, please get in touch with me. I was one of few that can say they beat FF11. Completed ever expansion in the 75 cap area, (Dream, Sky, Sea), 15 jobs to 75 all jobs to 37. I remember I could macro swap full sets of RA/EX into another full set of RA/EX for job abilities. With that i can say...NO this game isn't designed for a controller at all lol, with around 52 macro's programed on 10 different pages to swap too at any given time...Shift+number. I have been looking for a new game since the level cap killed what was 11, I just hearing of Horizon from this post, very interested in trying it out.

Going back to the days of FFXI wasting my time traveling and 200-250 exp max per fights? Pass... I lived through the era FFXI was in its prime. I wholly welcome the quality of life changes and not having to wait hours to try and get into a party.

Basically the best game ever made. However as much as it hurts, I would not recommend people play Horizon unless they have unironically 6+ hours per day to play, otherwise you are just wasting your time. As weird as it sounds I would recommend current retail ffxi to people. Game is populated as hell, and the quality of life stuff makes it possible to play and still not be a hermit. I know people shit on the lvl99 expansions stuff, but its more positives then negatives.

That’s not what articles say online lol. All the sites I went to indicates it came out for PS2 FIRST in Japan specifically then PC. In the US it was reverse, US got the game on PC first THEN PS2.

The issue with this is that FF11 is a "dying" game and one that lost a substantial amount of its player base to FF14. Its gameplay isn't something that will appeal to modern audiences or at least not at a level that will cause the game to gain more players than it loses. Retail has a lot of QoL improvements that can help ease some of the issues that players may have but I see issues with Horizon within a few years. I've played the game since October 2003 and it was a serious grind to do anything back then and required serious time to accomplish what would be simple things in modern games. This isn't going to last.

I played on HorizonXI for a while and I found out that the community of players are very petty and passive aggressive.....the server has a handful of GMs and admins to handle these players and unfortunately these GMs and admins are very ineffective at handling any sort of disagreement or banter between players.....completely unable to distinguish who is the aggressor in the situation.....for instance, a player can be passive aggressive and drop you from a party or drop from your party and if you send them a /tell (whisper) and cuss at them, then they can report you and get you in trouble. Don't risk spending over a thousand hours of your life on HorizonXI just to get it deleted due to an incapable admin.

the only way to make this game NOSTALGIC again is reset everything to lv 75 :) and make ppl fight like in the good old days . Party of 6 for hours to lvl up . camping HNM for hour and try to beat it while 1000+ looking with incredible LAG :) . farm sea sky for hours days months !!!! this is called NOSTALGIE !!!!! 2024 FFXI is total crap !!! you miss 2002 -2008 fun excitement and that cant ever be repeat again

FF11 community in it's heyday had it's ups, but it also had it's downsides. It was highly toxic in many ways because of the rampant elitism. Pugging anything was a real rough time because there would be times you'd sit there all day advertising that you needed a group. You'd finally get into one after hours of shouting only for the group to break up after a mere 5 minutes of play. These two things were near consistent, and eventually turned me off of the game completely. When it worked though, it REALLY worked.

Just be aware of the favoritism in this server as well as rude "helpers". Server is full of bots, gil farmers selling gil in game, and GMs quite literally giving the "top" players/linkshells items/gear and sometimes even gil, if you can keep that bad taste out of your mouth im sure you will have a lot of fun.

I actually do play retail, I liked the concept of horizon until it became inhabited by cry babies and rude ass gms/devs and just annoying cliques all around. Horizon Xi is built solely off the info on FFXI wiki and if you're an OG player like I am playing since 2004 you would know FFXI wiki is dog shit and doesn't actually have the correct information for most item sets, missions, bcnms etc. The majority of people playing thf on horizon got their AF gear by having it spawned in their inventory. Yeah retail isn't what it use to be in its prime but I take retail any day over a power hungry ran private server..... @@leroyschinkel1359

This post shouldn't be taken as if its the common consensus which it may sound like. GMs have done a great job removing bots, gilsellers - alot of bans. Also removed people from staff for questionable behaviour and abuse of power. Its still a private server - but very professionally handled. I guess thats why its so popular :)

@@leroyschinkel1359 there are 16 servers... not just one. Asura is the highest populated but you can find people anywhere. Most things are done in linkshells, only have that merc culture on Asura but even then you can still find friend. You only need 2 or 3 people to do anything in the game. Why force yourself to deal with people on a private server who will just quit lol. The "community" you speak of is an illusion. A bunch of neck beards trying to relive their glory days. Faking that community aspect, even tho it's a revolving door there like any modern MMO these days.
