The issue might be the Crystal Tools Engine they used back then. Pretty much like Luminous it was hard to develop for, and doing a remaster might be quite the undertaking to just get the engine compatible with modern consoles and hardware. They might be floating the idea of a remake because they're considering rebuilding the games from scratch in Unreal Engine as it might actually be easier to do that than trying to fix Crystal Tools to some extent.
@thanerosАй бұрын
Too soon for remakes but the right time for remasters. No need to port an already good looking game in a whole new engine then having to pay licensing fees for using the engine. The Xbox versions are already boosted to 60fps(XIII-2 and LR).
@lloganm1234Ай бұрын

@SacrificAbominatАй бұрын
@@lloganm1234 Yeah with pretty bad ports that need mods to make them work properly. They're going to run into similar issues trying to get them to run on current consoles as well. I can see them opting for doing a from scratch remaster in a new engine like they did with the Kingdom Hearts HD collections due to all of the issues the crystal tools has associated with it.
@costby1105Ай бұрын
It probably be easier to port it over to Unreal rather than remaking it ala the Shin Megami Tensei III HD or much worse the GTA definitive trilogy or Sonic Colors Ultimate. It depends on how much time is given and how hard the original code is to work with. I doubt Square Enix is going to go all out with remaking models or environments.
@SacrificAbominatАй бұрын

This is an old argument. you can look almost anywhere and people will explain it in detail. in 13 you're just on a road with nothing available, compared to 10 where you make stops and learn about the world and it's people. 10 also has a them of the pilgrimage and going down the road, while 13 doesn't really have that excuse. LR time management is tacked on as it is never an issue outside of forcing you to not to be able to do a mission. It's more on how the systems and world building is done rather that it just existing.

Ff7 remake was the exact same way. The only difference is everyone gives anything 7 related a pass.
@yammoto148Ай бұрын
@@zeosummers3984 Ok but 13's themes is that you are fugitives in that you are literally on the run from a government that detonated a nuke doing a lot of damage before you end up essentially turning into the devil from your mythology and get hunted down even harder. It would make no sense for NPCs to talk to you much if at all because they know who you are, you can't hide and nobody is on your side that much. That being said I do agree that most of the lore being in the datalog and not outright explained in the environment is a bit of an issue. Personally I would prefer small things like you find an old datapad left by an adventurer who came through there, maybe you complete a Ceith stone mission and you get more story on the person who it used to be, I feel small stuff like that could help people wrap their brains around the jargon and lore better than just telling them read the datalog. Also maybe expanding on the exploration of Cocoon a bit allowing you to backtrack and visit different zones would be like a nice touch if they did remake it.

@@persona3rulez I just started chapter 11 and there is plenty of story what are you talking about about?
@persona3rulezАй бұрын
@iggyig420 the story being "we're running forward"? Yeah, Snow HAD some motive and even Lightning had a goal but first 7 chapters moving this very slowly, like 1-2 flashbacks per chapter so you don't fully understand what's going on let alone how is this supposed to get interesting after they get their marks. I mean, yeah, sure, you can play and hope it'll become interesting but many people give up somewhere around chapter 2 and 3, when they still don't fully understand who are these characters, why were they in the city and who exactly are l'Cie. Especially since the first 2 chapters is just spamming auto-battle and only chapter 3 introduces paradigms which themselves aren't fully unlocked until like... Chapter 10? You definitely can't use Synergist with Lightning until you can finally customize your party. You might argue that Lightning is DPS, she shouldn't be a Synergist but if the game is all about auto-battle I might as well watch it on KZbin. It would save me around 60 hours of my life since I've spent like 80 hours on the game. You spend like half the game running from a flashback to a flashback just to see more flashbacks later that would make characters go from "oh no, I'm scared/furious" to "well, now I'm determined to fight the government". The government itself isn't even that interesting until you met Bart, lol. The plot starts to get interesting sometime when Vanille mentions the war for the first time but it's Chapter 8 if I recall correctly. I've spent like 15 hours just to get to Chapter 7 which was kinda cool but still auto-battles. Oh, yeah, people also find Hope's revenge arc really silly and comical because it's so puberty-ish it gets edgy and almost satirical. Lightning's change of heart was also really out of nowhere and amused at least me with how emotional she gets just by thinking "oh no, we're just pets to gods". Meanwhile Snow is so optimistic he's really annoying and made people call him an r-word :( Though his tearful monologue about saving people was really cool and then again Hope just ruined it with the lame murder attempt (which makes people hate him once more). I mean, he's a teenager but that's not an excuse for a writer. People supposed to like main characters not wait for them to find some brains and rational thinking along their road movie journey. Nevertheless the story is just very foggy and slow. By Chapter 10 it's still kinda hard to understand what you're supposed to be fighting: is it fate? Gods? Evil government? All three together? Why is Vanille here again? Is Miss Big Boobs still even relevant to the plot or I can forget about her like that one guy who died in Chapter 7 ig? P.S. the funniest shit in the game is some random soldier with a name. There's one guy in Chapter 14 that appears just for one single cutscene, has a generic soldier model, does literally nothing for the plot but writers still thought he deserves a name which you can only see if you turn on the names in subtitles. Like, nobody even refers to him by name nor I found his name anywhere in datalog. It's just a random expendable trooper with a name. Why? Well, how about you play 2 more games, maybe they've retconnee him to be a god? You never know with FF13 trilogy, you never know...

Let's be honest here, if they just twisted the more linear levels into somewhat expansive mazes with some extra goodies hidden at the dead ends -- like, say, extra tough battles and rewards -- that would probably placate a lot of the people who initially hated it. Sure, you'd need to give players the option to return to previous maps somehow, but then you'd have a way for them to move past tougher optional challenges without permanently missing out. Heck, just hide some extra non-consequential characters and locations in off-the-beaten-path places, like small hideouts where people who don't support the purge gather to help runaways. It doesn't affect the story, but it expands the world just a little bit, all the while giving players a reprieve from the action at various points; you can even slip the coveted mini game in there. At that point, just touch up the crystarium a little and you're golden.

To be fair even open world games are linear. It just gives you a big circle or arena with a few collectibles to travel in when the most optimal path is a straight line to the next point. I think of the 2013 Tomb Raider, they have big areas, but let's be real the exit is straight ahead along with maybe a few turns and an arena for the combat or stealth. If XIII had bigger areas it would literally nothing.
@hazelcrispАй бұрын
@@klop4228 NO NO NO this would ruin it. I swear people don't know how to use their brain. They literally use the words over and over, and using context you can easily figure it out without even needing the datalogs like I do. I swear people want complex telling but don't have the capacity or media literacy to figure things out. People really want it to be spoonfed to them. The way it was implemented is organic. They characters live in that world and is common knowledge so they don't need to exposite to each other. Over of the first lines is "Don't worry, I'm not a l'cie". HOw the characters react to certain words and events. And it becoms more clear as it goes on. From this you can infer that a l'cie is something the people don't like or are scared of. They say the terms over and over throughout that it build upon it, feeling natural, instead of an exposition dump. Allowing the player to use their brain and figure it out with context. X legit explains everything to you three times. Once because pivotal plot twists are new to everyone in the party, twice because Tidus isn't part of the world and needs additional context, and thrice because Wakka is either unwilling to accept something or just flat out dumb. Or VII where BArret says he's going to save the world five times in the first area. People just want things explained to them straight away. It's okay to be confused at first. It all comes together if you infer a little bit. We especially see it now with the MCU-ification of information. Thinking the story only works if you read the data logs is why movies need to explain every bit of minutia repeatedly now. The emotional and thematic core of the story is 100% there without the data logs, they only add to the sci fi world building that doesn't add to the story but to the setting
@xavierbrown2098Ай бұрын
@@hazelcrisp I disagree; the largest controversy XIII had upon release was its maps. Yes, there were weird spots about the story; the characters started out irritating; and a chunk of the lore was hidden in datalogs. But by far, the greatest issue people at the time had who hated the game, was the fact every map amounted to a hallway. Sure, open world games are technically linear in how they progress, but they're stuffed with so much extra content that their experiences are totally different. For example: The Elder Scrolls players tend to ignore the plot entirely in favor of living their own fantasies in the open world, which supports it, whereas Deus Ex -- the original -- let you make hidden choices to critically alter the story and ending. Final Fantasy games before had always given their players at least the option to look around, but not XIII; either go forward, or go back, and nothing else for nearly the whole game. It wouldn't fix everything, but that leeway is what worked for XIII-2 and all that did besides expanding the maps was unlock the level cap and let you swap leaders -- but those are pretty much no-brainers for any remaster or remake of XIII; literally another point of contention well documented everywhere.

As someone who has probably around 800hrs played in this trilogy, they have to do some changes if they remaster the trilogy. For the first game, they need to gut the tutorial, explain that you get a full ATB refresh every 12s when you paradigm shift and give you more Roles/Abilites early in so you aren't just spamming attack for the first 4 chapters. I hope they add the cancelled DLC as a lot of the files are still in the game and can be reached with hacks. They should rework the upgrade system to something more modern, make all items buyable in the shop endgame so some aren't misable and lastly, allow you to re-visit older chapters story missions and areas like in like in FF16. The most important change they could make in the entire trilogy is for them to remove the Time Clock in FF13 LR. Everyone said it was a bad idea back then and even 13 years later it is still probably the worst designed mechanic in any video to this date. It punishes first timers to the game, makes bad players unable to complete the game and it forces you to basically pause the game every 2 minutes and permanently looking at online guides so you don't run out of time. They need to remove it 100% and there's no reason not to unless you want the game to fail. FF13 LR is a great game that fails to meet its potential due to this mechanic, it has a newgame +, multiple quest endings that encourage you to do more than 1 playthrough. It really needs no work other than reworking this stupid mechanic to allow everyone to play through at their own pace. You want people to spend as much time in your game and enjoy the journey. FF13-2 is really solid as it tackled most of the main issue's of 13-1. The pet mechanic to min/max is pretty annoying but not the worst grind in modern day standards, it would be cool to rework it slightly but leaving it wouldn't be the worst thing. The only thing I don't like is that Noel and Serah aren't as good as the old main cast in FF13. It would be cool after you completed the game they could allow you to play as the FF13 cast to have fun endgame, this would be easy as you can use time paradox's and time travel to allow this. It would make the main cast more dynamic as you a pretty much forced to make Serah your typical Magic User and Noel your typical Strength user so playing the party can get pretty stale quickly. Also you can actually level wrong in this game and make your characters have like 10-20% weaker stats if you level randomly so this should be probably fix this too. The other really good change they could do is add a NEW GAME + to FF13-1 & FF13-2 to give the games x2 playtime like FF13 LR did. It's always a great feature for any game to have. It wouldn't need that much work as all you gotta do is allow Items to Upgrade further on New Game Plus and Rework Enemy Stats and add a few more levels for the party members. They could even go as far as adding a new mechanic or attack on every boss. I think if they are gonna do a FF13 Trilogy remaster these are things they will have to take into consideration. I think if they did these and marketed it well, it would probably be as successful or even more successful than the FF7 remake. Slightly improve the graphics + textures and basic to moderate reworks to the game systems in all 3 games and you'll have 3 games that are super high quality, got 100-200hrs playtime each and it will take less work than releasing a single AAA game by x100. I personally think they should of this route because releasing them without changes will be a bad move in my opinion. They are still semi-playable to this day and these are major flaws the games have that should be fixed for a remaster.

FFXIII is my favourite JRPG. I have it on PC. But i just want it rereleased so I can play it on my PS5. I also realised that if there is a port or whatever I have to see everyone dunking on it and complaning about things that I find to be non-issues.

There are definitely a few quality of life improvements I'd love for the first FFXIII: - Allow Wide vs Narrow instructions for your teammates when setting up Paradigms - Allow paradigms to be saved/loaded, or just don't reset them every time you change your team - Fix the material/weapon improvement system to be less opaque, or rebalance to allow for people to be able to try out more weapons for each character without screwing themselves over unless they're meticulously managing their bonus multiplier system. - Default to no minimap!! You'd be surprised how this ONE change can seriously change perspectives on the game for new players. Taking in the environment without having a constant reminder of you being in a *literal* hallway really makes a difference. - Adding small town services, NPCs, sights, and whatnot to even just a few spots in the original story would be fantastic. Palumpolum and other spots are fully fleshed out, but don't have points of interest that have any bearing on you. Even just a few more things to do here and there, when it makes sense for the story, would be great. P5R improved on P5 a lot in this way. FFXIII's pre-rendered cutscenes were phenomenal. I'd hope that if we do get a remaster they maintain that level of quality if they do end up switching to in-engine cutscenes like they did for FFXIII-2. The latter's were still good, but they always looked rougher to me on the PS3. Lighting Returns (Can we rename it to FFXIII-3 now like it should have been?) really needs some rebalancing or direction though. I was able to get through it because I was working off a strategy guide, but the time limit is just too unforgiving if you're not managing it to an absolute T, and it's a huge shift in mental requirements compared to the other two. Couldn't get parents to be able to handle that, for example. The thing with remakes instead of remasters is that it doesn't have to be a FFVII-style massive reconstruction, it can just have a lot of bonus content and continuity fixed. They infamously mentioned that they had enough cut material for FFXIII to make two other separate games, because of all the different ideas they went through during that development hell. Obviously some of that went into the sequels, and Versus XIII, but it would still be awesome to see some things reinserted, to give more foreshadowing about what happens in FFXIII-2 and LR, to give Jill more of a thing to do and rework some of the clunkiest of dialogue, and maybe to do right by Sazh this time instead of him getting the shaft. Anyway.... Hoping the rumors are true! It's been too long since playing!

I like to add that Lightning should cast magic by shooting it from her gunblade. I love that gunblade and cannot believe they removed it from the sequel. Also level redesign too. ☕

If they do a remaster I'd like them to allow respeccing in 13-2 because with the leveling system it was possible to mess up and ruin your characters and monsters. Also they should allow you to have more than one of the same type of monster because when you used monsters to transfer skills you had to use them up then catch a new one and use that one up etc.

I think that with most of the FFXIII working of FFVII Remake, they got their hands full to move on with a remaster/remake of FFXIII. But the fact that the team is active and already has the blueprint to remake FFXIII (ironically XIII is essentially the precursor/blueprint for VII Remake…down to the music too…) to remake the game. But honestly,the game is so goddam beautiful it just amazes me how it still stands the test of time 15 years later and don’t think it needs a full overhaul.

FF13 being one of them as there's a limit to saying such things when it gets to a point of not believing what is being said especially in comparison to what else the person has played. They're either lying or have a severe case of blind nostalgia as there are no redeeming qualities in a horrible character like Lightning. Snow is a piece of garbage whom the party should of died long ago under him. The two best characters are relegated to being side shows and had potential that being Sazh and Hope. Since you want to take up the mantle for the guy why don't you explain what redeeming qualities does a shiet game like FF13 have other the other games the person has played particularly FF7R. My first FF is FF4 and I am not blinded by nostalgia to know that the game has flaws and takes away a lot of the immersion because of what happens in the story. FF4 isn't my fav game that's FF6. Between a combat system that didn't want players playing it (auto-battle and stars for low fight time that the slightest use of the menu will prevent you from getting), the unnecessarily apostrophed gobbledegook of "l'Cie" and "fal'Cie" and "Cie'th" thrown around as if it's not extraordinarily confusing, the mostly uncompelling characters, the teammate AI making bad choices (I distinctly remember dying when expecting Hope to heal me as I was nearly dead, and he healed himself instead), and that awful main character death means game over mechanic, the ridiculous summon battles... This game was a train wreck that I have no desire to revisit.

Crazy how most of the classic mainline FF are remastered and available on newer PS and even the switch now except for 13 and the only explanation I have is that it was in the awkward ps3 era. I notice a lot of ps3 games (at least the ones I’ve played) haven’t been remastered or ported. Another is Drakengard 3 which never got ported despite being somewhat popular but other older drakengard and nier games got ported or remade. The difference was drakengard 3 was on ps3, same as ff13.

I didn’t mind the linearity at all because I’m kind of a collectaholic, so I spend ages in open world games kinda wasting time running around lol. Remake that made the story more understandable and made it less linear would be cool but the game is still good as is.

💚100% agree with all of your additions, one QoL of a remaster for the first game is the paradigm shift camera/wait time. That can ruin some fights waiting to act as everyone does their little animations. It's baffling how misunderstood the Xbox ecosystem is. You can outright buy FF13, 13-2, and LR via the Xbox store, or by using your own disc via backwards compatibility. It's rare for games to be outright delisted. Games leaving the Gamepass service doesn't mean it's been delisted.

Here is what I think: Since they are Square they want to charge 60 bucks per game. But they know they cannot sell a collection of all 3 games for 180. The most people will pay is 90 for a collection. But that's only 30 bucks per game. If they release them one by one they maybe can sell the first remastered game for 60 but the other two games will not sell. So they have to sell them as a collection. But because the price they can realistically charge is not high enough they do nothing.
