The first and only fight so far in Dawntrail where it is necessary for the Warrior of Light to uses the crystal of Azem. If you notice, in every other fight, we could always uses the help from the npc as the threat was not a high level. For all the expansion, NPCs where laughing at Wuk Lamat but always looking at you being careful, as they know that you are on a next level compared to them. Even the boosted Zarool Jaja is not a real threat worthy of that power. But Sphene was. I love that they are consistent with the previous lore and didn't forget that the crystal exists, but also that we didn't really need it before her.

I'm pretty sure this is bad voice direction on the English version. It crops up with other characters (Y'shtola in her first scene had similar issues), like - that scene where Wuk is being crushed by Sphene's hand? It doesn't sound like she's attempting to strain at all. Not because her voice acting is bad - it would sound like shit straining if it was. Its because no one has simply told her "this is what is happening in this scene, this is how the character would be reacting"

I found out that Y'shtola's eyesight taking her aether was just a random made-up lore bit on the localization side. It's why it's so painful. I pity people who only speak one language, lmao. Honestly fair but Im looking at PEAK finale imo so wtf do you mean??? Ngl the beginning felt slow, but it was necessary for the entire 2nd half to hit hard as heck and to be so good If I had to say 1 thing, maybe the first half could have been slightly faster in some ways, but keeping the balance between "less story" and "more character growth & attachment to the people of tural" is rather difficult so I personally cannot think of a way to improve at the top of my head but there problably is I'll give it a 9.5/10, sure its an opinion, but im surprised the reactions are so mixed This is my 2nd favourite expansion story, only behind Endwalker (absolutely loved Endwalker)

@@sylvosane I also would give the xpac a 9.5/10, negative criticism is fine but I'm also genuinely shocked that the reactions to the xpac are so mixed, even the "slow" beginning was fun to me as someone that loves worldbuilding and I never really felt like any part of the story dragged on too long personally, and having the different feats for the rite made the "filler" quests in the beginning feel so much less "filler" since it gave reasons for why we're doing little "helper" tasks in each zone, vs. some of them in earlier xpacs that make you wonder "why am I here for so long?" with flimsier explanations, but I digress I wouldn't even call myself ride or die for yoshi-p/square enix because I have a less favorable opinion of shadowbringers than probably 75% of the game's population, so I counter the sentiment of "y'all don't want any negative criticism" with my own subjective absolute statement of "the people shitting on the xpac can't let themselves enjoy new things" 🤷‍♂

There are points of this story that are so unbelievably bad that it feels like fan fiction written by a seven year old. The twists are predictable, the characters aren't endearing, the voice acting is atrocious (not on just Wuk Lamat, but almost every single new character) and so much time is given to filler when that could've been put towards development for other characters. It is actually scary how high of a tolerance FFXIV fans have for slop.

To be honest, it looks like the key was absorbing some of our magic. When I brought this up to some lore nerds in my FC, they all agreed that it's probably some form of auracyte based on the structure inside the key, and how it looks like some of our magic is being drawn into the key. While some people are saying that this means that Azem, the Ascians, or some new ancient made the key, I don't necessarily think that's the case.

It makes perfect sense that they had some manner of key that would let them travel anywhere they want-- they may even have made it after Venat told them about her plan to sunder the star, as a way for their future self to be able to travel between the shards.

@@thelegendarycoline6667 I have to disagree, all characters with experience with the artifact talked about a golden light when it was used in the past, which is very similar to the golden hue the magic from Azem's crystal produces. One could demonstrate the absorption of power in a myriad different ways, but the developers chose to zoom in and focus plainly on the symbol, you have to look at it from the perspective of the developers, what are they trying to get across or imply by that. Tossing it up to "Oh it just absorbed our powers" just doesn't really fit well. You don't perform a close-up of a very well known and extremely important lore symbol for something as basic as demonstrating absorption of power, no, the fact that it shows up right before the artifact is fully powered and is given so much focus definitely implies there is some connection to Azem present. It's also worth noting that the singular power which we call upon Azem's crystal for is to summon helpers from other planes, implied heavily to be warriors from other shards or possibly even further. And what do we have here but an artifact that is related to bridging the barrier between worlds. The fact that the new artifact and Azem's crystal both relate to dimensional connections makes the notion that the symbol not implying a connection to Azem even less likely.

Weirdly weak attempt at... gospel music? And possibly the most saccharine ending wrap-up so far in the MSQ. This was a straight up 90s Disney Channel TV movie of a story. Like this is some Free Willy stuff right here, except MJ did a better gospel song. I'm not even mad at the voice acting. I've played Trails of Cold Steel, so I've already heard what rock bottom can sound like. I'm mad at the _writing_. The dialog is repetitive and insistent and matcha latte has like three things to say in the whole game: her feelings about papa, her feelings about her people, and "I want to learn about you!" This cat girl is serving serious kid Naruto vibes.

There's some highlights, but this expansion is some of the worst and it's not just because there's a painfully obvious "donut steel OC".

There's some aesthetic magic to a lot of it, and I loved the feel of flying into and out of the lower forest of that one region, but at the same time the volume is gonna get reeeeal loud from the "mounts in cities" crowd. These are two of the woorrrst cities to get around, no matter how pretty they are to look at. I honestly kept feeling like a lot of layout choices were purely to slow the player down and pad game time with navigation. But overall it was nice to explore Planet Mira and the endless now a little more. This was a Xenoblade fan game, right?

Where to find the option: Esc > Character Configuration > Control Settings > Character Tab (top) > Scroll a little to find "Battle Effects Settings" You have 4 categories (Own, Party, Others Except PvP, PvP Opponents) And 3 options for each category (All, Some, None). Different drives though. What Sphene wants to achieve is closer to what Garland wanted in the og FF9. Necron is a transcendent force that lies within the planet and comes to end life whenever someone with a strong will desires it (in that case, it was Kuja that woke it up). I still believe that either Necron or a Kuja expy will show up either in the Arcadion or as the last boss of the expansion (like Golbez).

@@DollRyougi Nope, they stil have different drives. The Endsinger was based on the Maenad from FF IV: The After Years. The Maenad were also a group of girls with a shared mind that invaded the world. The Endsinger's drive is to erase all life on the universe because of the answer she found for the purpose of life. Necron does not have a reason to destroy the world, it is simply its function. It was awakened by Kuja's desire to die and take everything away with him. Necron is actually a kind of unresolved mystery in FF, because it was decided to be the final boss of the game at the last stage of its devolopment. The reason why the Queen Eternal is going to kill everyone is because she wants to preserve only her people, but aside from that, she seems to be as instinct-driven as Necron.

@@shiningdahlia Necron is thematically just the representation of nihilism and was meant to tie back to other FF antagonists, specifically from the SNES era, villains in the game generally signify a negative concept in the theme, in FF9, the overarching idea is that everything comes to an end, Vivi struggles with death, Steiner and Beatrix struggle with their loyalties coming to an end, Zidane losing his home and identity, Garnet "losing" her past and rediscovering who she is, etc, Necron is Kuja succumbing to the struggle that everyone was fighting, and the party beating it signifies the overcoming of grief and loss to live their lives Necron also ties into characters like Exdeath, Cloud of Darkness, both of which share numerous designs, motifs, etc, tying back to Sakaguchi's "farewell" for the series into the new era

I feel like this story was really bad... For me, the start being slow was fine, but the final map was just terrible. Cahciua asks us to delete/end all the endless so that Sphene has nothing left to fight for. So we go through six hours of sidequests getting to know the endless and how human and real they are, just to kill them all despite them having all the components that make up a real person, just to... Not tell Sphene about it, and it doesn't even matter? Why did we do all of those quests in the final area, why not just turn off/delete Cahquia to free her? What was the point of any of that? Why does the map have to permanently stay looking all dead? I get that the theme is letting go, but like... Didn't Endwalker and Ultima Thule already do that in a way that makes sense? Why did we need a theme about accepting death and a world-ending threat out of absolutely nowhere in what we were told would be a summer vacation full of adventures with no world ending threats? I'm so lost...

While we did turn off all the terminals, there is nothing stopping Sphene from creating more terminals, or supplying aether back to the terminals to turn them back on. The reason we were even able to turn them off is because she was too busy in the Meso Terminal removing her memories/emotions that she inherited from the real Sphene, because she couldn't commit the atrocities she wanted to without said memories/emotions being wiped away. The endless absolutely could not live. Their existence alone is the sole reason why Sphene wanted to fuse shards with our own, killing the inhabitants of those shards when fused and stealing their aether to replenish the aether of the endless in the process. And, the endless don't really have all the components that make them a real person, the endless don't have souls. All they are, are memories given physical form.

I genuinely think that its a problem with the story speedrunners of the community. As someone who finished Endwalker in a comparable amount of time to Dawntrail, I remember seeing an overwhelming amount of hatred about the ending and other elements of the main story in the first week. Once the dust settled and more casual players finished the expansion within that first and second week, the narrative switched completely. I think it's a mix of tryhards being irritable as always, and people who only engaged with the story through cutscenes on KZbin.

Endwalker was bad because of retcons and having everyone come back to life for no reason like that, the whole thing with Emet sacrificing everything for Amaurot and your conversation with Hythlodaleus memory in ShB, but they can just bring their souls from the lifestream after like it's nothing. Dawntrail has bad writing from the start until heritage found. In endwalker you went to the moon and fought Zodiark by the first trial. In Dawntrail it took until level 97 for things to start moving.

From a junior team of writers (which YoshiP told us was going to be the case at Fanfest), the MSQ wasn't *that* awful. 6/10. It had some good moments, had some intriguing and emotional bits. However, the pacing is all over the place and a lot could have been done better. That said, letting a junior team take the reigns to get real experience and see a shipped product actually reach the public and receive real criticism is valuable experience. For that I commend SE. That's a financial risk most studios would NEVER take. But everything...and I mean ***EVERYTHING*** about Wut Lmao's character is absolutely atrocious. The writing is terrible, the voice acting is terrible (barely tolerable in JP, utterly unforgiveable in ENG). Her existence literally invalidates the WoLs reason for existing and all accomplishments prior. From an immature furball of a child, powered by friendship and disney princess energy becomes a legendary warrior even more powerful than the WoL. A lot of the toxic positivity posts claiming those that disliked Dawntrail were apparently expecting another Shadowbringers or Endwalker type story are a bit ridiculous. DT was pitched as a vacation for the WoL. A chance to meet new characters and go on a laid back adventure to explore a new region. The scions were expected to be present but not really involved (relegated to background characters). Having some conflict and some big-bads along the way makes sense (i mean, they do need some sort of excuse to include new dungeons/trials), but a new apocalypse wasn't necessary nor expected.

Although I enjoyed all the call backs to FF9 (Sphene is also the name of stone, just like Garnet, Alexandria taking the place of the Terran civilization; which is a total inversion of the original FF9 ethics, where the players were put against Garland, who was trying to resurrect his lost civilization at the cost of yours, and now we see the FFXIV Garnet put in his shoes; the whole throne contest just being another Festival of the Hunt), I would prefer for the story to be just about you going on the whole throne contest and having fun with the Scions. Valigarmanda could be the final boss for as much as I care. But still, they fell for the same trap hole from Shadowbringers. Well, the whole souls and energy kinda sets up for Jenova, Kuja and Necron (which is my bet for the final boss, because of its comparison to Exdeath and because Krile's journey need a new nemesis). We still have to see the plot behind the Arcadion and the post-MSQ quests. Also, the trials could bring some surprises. It is still too early to dismiss what kind of surprises Dawntrail can bring. Wuk Lamat replaying Gaia (weird, because it is the name of blue planet from FF9) also makes sense, people forgot the first new ultimate trial will be Futures Rewritten (aka Eden's raids)? TL;DR: This MSQ is just the first part of the story. Is it a filler? I agree. Is it a filler for FFIX fans? I do not know, because I felt satisfied with all the bits and chips FFXIV manages to throw at us. Even the first boss of the first dungeon is a Abaddon from FFIX. And we still got the Dawn Warriros and Relm. I mean, all I need is a fight against big Kuja in his fake nude clothes and Terra's Theme orchestrion roll. Also Oeilvert as a dungeon. Edit 2: The storyline problem comes from the fact that it is actually a reverse Uno card played on the adventurer: in the words of Sphene, what would you do to save your people? The Adventurer basically went on a war against whatever was in front of his/her objectives to protect Eorzea, but what if we have to face the same dilemma that Sphene faced? Save your people and kill everyone else, or let everyone die and save the ones you do not know? This problem takes basically the entirety of the MSQ to surface, hence why everyone is complaining.

Yes the ones we shut down totally gone 100% doneso by what we were told. Factory reset those hardrives. But her terminal was still survivable if we lost. I’m not going to crunch numbers but looking at all the buildings around I’m guessing close to hundreds of thousands of people were housed in the meso terminal. I’m guessing she was fine saving them, and her fervor was 10x stronger because she was seeing you essentially kill mass populations of her citizens. I think Cafhciua mentions that sphene wouldn’t be able to interrupt our plans, but it would most likely accelerate her plans in desperation. Anyway in the end at least the memories were happy and fulfilled in the end! So try not to be Uber depressed, it’s like a bittersweet goodbye to a long dead people who were happy to tell you a tale of their lives

What do you mean tho. Like is this based on this cutscene, or the fight? Also as a side tangent, msq might be like 40% of reasons to play ffxiv, but it’s also an mmo. So there is a lot of reasons to continue playing even if you don’t like the msq. All the fight mechanics are unique so far, and as a raider it’s going to be fine seeing what they’re cooking up. But I get it if you don’t find fun playing higher level content. A lot of people either skip cutscene spam to get to the end exclusively to ex trials/raid. So the reasons for them saying “it’s all the same” is fundamentally different from yours. Probably, I mean we won’t know unless you elaborate

I wouldn’t say we’re background characters, however yes wuk lamat is the main character. We’re essentially mentoring her to become the great dawnservant she needs to be! Maybe spoilers ahead , though contextless. Sadly I think the msq suffers from having too little interactions involving the wol and wuk lamat. Like you’re always there with her, but your input is normally just one of two dialogues. There are a few scenes where you SHINE and do some awesome things, especially in the latter half. But I think there should have been more engagement. You know moments where wuk lamat can see you for who you are and aspire to be ask caring/cool/exc.

Hard disagree, was unbearable the entire time, though it's also the writing. Her character is fine, the role she was put in didn't match.

The voice actress isn’t that bad, but she had to work with a trashy script that is completely unacceptable from a AAA game in the year of 2024.

The EN dub is literal character assassination. The difference between how her character comes across in EN and every other dub is night and day, an absolute DISASTEROUS casting choice, casting director needs to be fired.
