In the present, Cloud explains they returned to the Inn in Nibelheim, but Sephiroth became a recluse, and one evening he disappeared without informing anyone. Back in the past, head downstairs and the mayor will inform you that Sephiroth departed for Shinra Manor.
Exit the inn and follow the worried group of villagers as they head left (up towards the Mt. Nibel path). Turn left with the villagers to pass through the gateway of Shinra Manor, following the path until you reach the Manor itself.
Enter the Manor through the front doors and head left where you’ll find a button on the wall you can interact with, opening up the elevator. Ride the elevator down and go down the stairs, going straight across the large open room, and heading left to find Sephiroth in a small library area.
Sephiroth is reading history books, describing how an ancient life-form was extracted from rock long ago and was named Jenova, with the Jenova Project approved shortly thereafter. With his suspicions about his conception confirmed, Sephiroth becomes obsessed with reading about the project.
Back in Nibelheim later, Cloud mulls over what it all means. Meeting back up with Sephiroth in Shinra Manor, Sephiroth vocally acknowledges that Jenova was an Ancient - a steward of the planet - and that the Jenova Project was an attempt to resurrect the Ancients that birthed him.
Filled with rage and disbelief, Sephiroth snaps and calmly launches Cloud across the room, knocking him unconscious. Coming to and returning outside, everything is on fire.
Follow the path and after meeting Zangan turn right to go back to the village, where a falling log nearly collapses on you. Recovering, slowly limp forward into the village and head towards your mother’s home. Before you can reach it, additional debris will fall and block the path. Do a 180-degree turn and head into the open doorway that a villager escapes from and use the crawlspace under the debris to the left once inside the building.
Follow the path around, crouching once again, and then loop around to the left to reach the house, narrowly escaping the falling water tower. Reach the front door of the home and a blast from inside will send you flying back, with echoing words and flashes of your mother telling you to get away and survive.
As a militiaman attempts to help you up, Sephiroth runs him through with his sword. As Sephiroth slowly walks away, crawl towards him by alternately pressing L2 and R2, as other villagers and militiamen attempt to fend off Sephiroth.
Hold both L2 and R2 simultaneously when prompted to get back on your feet, as Sephiroth strikes down Mayor Zander. Sephiroth calmly proclaims “Wait for me… I’m coming” as he walks past Cloud without acknowledgement. As Cloud calls his name, Sephiroth slowly turns and smiles before walking away into the flames.
Later, Cloud returns to the reactor to confront Sephiroth and finds Tifa grieving over her fathers body. She grabs Sephiroth’s sword off the ground and charges him in the pod chamber, but he catches the blade at the last second and reverses it, slashing Tifa across the abdomen.
As Cloud carries Tifa to safety, she appears to succumb to her wounds. Cloud then storms the inner Jenova chamber as Sephiroth monologues to Jenova, visible within the containment tank. As Cloud and Sephiroth prepare to fight, Cloud in the present explains he remembers nothing past that point.
The party debates how, or even if, Sephiroth is still alive, and why he’s back after 5 years. They retire for the night without a clear answer. Later, Aerith and Tifa discuss what Cloud himself has been doing the past 5 years, as Tifa shares her concern as she’s certain Cloud wasn’t in Nibelheim. Restless, Tifa calls for Cloud to meet with her.
Open the door and follow her across the landing where you’ll be interrupted by a vision of Sephiroth who questions Cloud about how Tifa is alive if she was killed years ago. Head out through the open door and walk up the stairs to the roof to speak with Tifa.
You confront one another about the events at the Nibelheim reactor, and Tifa shows her scar to prove she’s not an impostor, and that Zangan saved her. Cloud can’t tell Tifa where he’s been the past 5 years, to which she tearfully relents and asks for time alone. Head back downstairs and return to your room where Barret confronts you about infighting, which Cloud dismisses and settles down for sleep.
