It is so simple Sephiroth explained everything. 1) There are multiple worlds, because they defeated fate in remake. Now everytime a choice is made, then a new world is born. Some of those new world endure long, while others are destroyed fast ( that's what the white yellow crack symbolizes in the sky, it's a world that is about to end 2) Aerith went to a world ( with Cloud ) where her WHITE MATERIA was still intact and she gave it to Cloud and then pushed Cloud out of that dying world back into this Cloud`s original world, where cloud give Aerith the WHITE MATERIA . ( it's basically the white materia from the coma Aerith of the doomed world ) . So this Aerith simply replaced that WHITE MATERIA with her empty one, that she gave to Cloud 3) When Aerith was killed, then again a new world was created , one where Cloud stopped Sephiroth ( we saw how he tried to stop the attack with his sword ) and the other where she died...thats why there are flashes of Aerith`s arm having blood on it and then beeing clean and then again blood. It flashes between 2 worlds, one where she survived the attack and the other where she died. 4) Clouds mind is not messed up at the ending. He keeps seeing 2 worlds at the same time. But Aerith i don't know if it is meant to be simply a ghost from the life stream or an Aerith from the other world where she survived the attack and she hanging out with her friends and because Clouds sees two worlds he keeps seeing her. Fact is Red sensed her too . This last part i don't know if it is ghost Aerith or Cloud sees an Aerith from another world... but everything else I think i was able to analyse correctly.

Tifa not saying a single word at the end is so impactful. She, who was always ready to reassure Cloud, has completely lost faith in him and sees how he is mentally gone. I regally like how they showed her and Aerith become real close friends rather than pit them against another all for Cloud's favours. Some hate the ending but i think the devs did a good job at showing how messed up and incapable of facing reality and failures Cloud is, which was a main theme of OG.

I loved Tifa and Aerith’s friendship so much in Rebirth! They truly were amazing together and I loved how Aerith always stuck up for Tifa esp with that Bugenhagen guy who called Tifa stupid. It really pains me that Tifa not only lost Aerith but with Cloud also losing touch with reality. Not to mention that poor Aerith just wanted to live a happy and peaceful life with the people she loved and Sephiorth/Shinra just had to ruin it for her 😞 this game is so painful but I really love it so far

Cloud has all the cards staked against him though, I find Tifa's new out look on Cloud very sad because now she is going to distance herself from him and that isn't good for his development especially with Aerith present, Tifa is the only one left that can reach him now and Cloud NEEDS her and she seems very unwilling to help him now.

I love thisssss! This whole ending sequence was done really well in my opinion. I know some people don't like it but I can't wait to see how Part 3 really pushes the narrative.

I think the ending encapsulates a lot of the intent of Remake’s interpretation. This project set out to be two things, about 95% faithful reimagining of the OG FF7 that incorporates lore from the complications games in a non-invasive way and the other 5% completely new concepts and material that allowed the devs to approach the game fresh when designing. It opened up new mysteries and questions and allowed new and old fans to speculate and theory craft between the next entry. The biggest anticipation from Remake was Will they or Won’t they Kill Aerith. Does changing fate matter, or is it inevitably? Is there another timeline to interfere with the main? The devs were like, yeah, but not in the finite way we believe. Some might feel it’s non committal, but it’s also setting up uncertainty in the player again, because, that’s what the party is feeling in game as well; a sense of tragic loss and being lost.

this ending was really confusing to me, but from my incorporation of this is this theory's: 1: Aerith is dead (at least in this timeline) based on Tifa's, yuffie and barrets reactions at the end of it all, along with her disappearing from cloud after the final fight. that Aerith was from lifestream. but Cloud's mind is so messed up by Sephiroth he can't think/see straight. 2: the Aerith cloud sees is due to the lifestream, and due to cloud's connection to mako/genova, he can see her. which may explain how Tifa saw blood and didn't see it at the same time, like maybe due to her being in the lifestream prior, she sees her aerith die, but another having survived thanks to cloud. 3: The aerith cloud saved is the one speaking to him, due to the whole multiverse mumbo jumbo. due to (another) aerith dragging him in another reality, maybe he can see another version perhaps. which may explain why she dragged cloud into the other reality, because she's aware she may be destined to die no matter what and wanted to confess her feelings without any regrets. Regardless, if they are going by the 1997 game, then I'm afraid aerith is dead aside from this whole alternative reality stuff.

I hope you don't mind me putting my theories here. But I think Sephiroth tried to bring all the timelines together, I assume with his whisper/fate powers, so that when he kills Aerith here, it happens in all of them. But Cloud stopped him and created a new timeline (the rainbowy effects when it switches back to "normal"). With Sephiroth defeated, all the timelines he pulled together are now bouncing back into place. Like the gold saucer, all timelines have the same central planetary origin, and this is where Cloud & Zack fought Sephiroth.

my theory is Cloud has yet again created an illusion in his mind which Aerith didn't die, with Jenova doing her mojo behind it again, base on the music when Cloud saw Aerith sitting next to him after the "headache glitch" was midgard theme, and Aerith after that was only repeating what she has said before, hence "Jenova will become anything to fool her pray" I'm excited to see how the 3rd game explains everything. also they didn't show how the group deal with Aerith's body, which was an important scene in OG, i think they purposfully skipped it due to Cloud's mental state

Aerith of our timeline is dead. This is unquestionable. It really comes down to why the rainbow light was activated upon Cloud saving Aerith. Clearly, this created an alternate timeline where Aerith lives. When Aerith gives Cloud the white materia, a rainbow light is activated then as well indicating another timeline creation. The rainbow light, and light in general in the series is very important. Devs put it there for a reason.

@@LeiliLaus I agree with this. To me, life stream Aerith ONLY comes in during the fight with Sephiroth. She is the most wise and knowledgable Aerith; the one at the end that says goodbye is the alternate timeline Aerith who I believe will also need to likely die to disallow Sephiroth from activating meteor. Aerith MUST be full power mode to defeat Sephiroth, which means being fully within the lifestream.

No way this is just a metaphorical thing for Cloud. Remember, this whole thing is a retelling of sorts of the original game. But in the original, the last thing Cloud could do was let go of Aerith after she died. She became the big motivator to get Sephiroth after he killed her. He couldn't even let go of his guilt for not saving her in Advent Children. Now, he is the only one that seems calm, happy even. He can't even acknowledge everyone else seeming saddened by something. That's a big 180 from how he responded in the original game. Plus, Nanaki wouldn't have felt her physically if she wasn't actually there. So she's pretty much literally there and she did something different to Cloud to make him believe she never died. As for Sephiroth using Aerith's image to manipulate Cloud, no way that's true either unless Aerith and Sephiroth swapped places. Aerith being alive in Clouds mind doesn't benefit Sephiroth. Plus, her showing up at the edge of creation drove him off whereas before Cloud was no match for him in Remake. So I just think this is all Aerith's doing to help keep Sephiroth out of his head. To what end in the long run, I can't say. But it's what most of the evidence points to. She's basically taking a page out of Sephiroths manipulation book but seemingly for Cloud and the world's benefit instead of its destruction

It's simple Cloud has saved Aerith and that created a new timeline where she survives. Sephiroth just messes with him since Cloud is somehow glitching between the two timelines. The one where we see Sephiroth with the blood on masamune is another timeline where she died. He glitches Cloud somehow between the worlds to confuse the hell out of him for some reason.

Where did you get this and how did you come with this conclusion? If there were two timelines, then how come aerith was dead in the other if she was saved? There was no new timeline going on, cloud is just delusional and couldnt accept aerith died. In his mind he saved aerith, that’s why they keep showing some reality checks like with what tifa and the party saw vs what cloud sees. Sephiroth is messing up with cloud because he is part of him.

Aerith knows what going on in the timelines in our timeline sephiroths whispers depleted the holy materia, thats why she teleporrted cloud to a timeline where he didnt do that, to give "that aerith" her holy to cloud so he could give it to her

The devs worked really hard to put the player in Cloud's shoes at the end. When Cloud is tripping balls, convinced that Aerith is still alive, we are right there with him. "I saved her in another timeline, right?" Unfortunately, I think that glitch we saw indicated Sephiroth merging the timeline split so that Aerith died no matter what. It was all a ploy to harvest the negative emotions surrounding Aerith's death from every timeline. Aerith is way more powerful from within the lifestream anyway, so it's in the planet's best interest if she dies. And yeah, the Aerith that pops up at the end is almost certainly some kind of Sephiroth/Jenova manipulation. The music is scary as hell, and Aerith does NOT act like herself from that point forward. She just starts encouraging Cloud to go and fight Sephiroth after spending the entire final chapter trying to get him to focus on himself instead of Sephiroth. Not to mention, she disappears the moment Cloud stops paying attention.

Sephiroth smeared Aerith's blood on Cloud and he still refused to believe that she was dead. So he was probably like “fine if all i have to do is pretend to be someone you care about fine” “You'll never see the truth with such Clouded eyes” translation, she's dead dumbass. I never thought of that cause I was shocked to see Cloud reflect Sephiroth’s sword but she still died. @@zacatkinson3926 idk much about the jenova manipulation theory but as crazy as it sounds, it’s starting to sound kinda plausible to me. Almost everything she said at the end there was something she’d said before to cloud(her asking about if she wasn’t ok getting home, saying it’s like a second home, sending up smoke). And we know that Jenova’s main skill is mimicry which is why cloud has some of Zack’s memories. But all this being said, I can’t completely believe bc Red still recognized her as Aerith and the way she said goodbye in the end 😢

Bro, when Sephiroth does Whisper canon, switch to Aerith and do a second tier fire or thunder spell to get rid of his whiny and stagger him. When he does whisper whirlwind, switch to Aerith and use Soul drain on the mansamune to stagger him then. When he uses The end is nigh, use Cloud’s focused thrust on Sephiroth to drive up his stagger gauge.

Well, unlike Wedge, Biggs etc, she is a Cetra and keeps a consciousness and power in the lifestream. In fact the Aerith of the "date" is not the Aerith we have been travelling with, but the Aerith of the lifestream already, the Aerith of the Original Game.

On the topic of Max’s theory, you brought up something I believe might happen in the finale. So, Max believe’s that when Sephiroth killed Aerith, that was the moment when the worlds merged. All those rainbow effects is us seeing the timeline where Cloud did save Aerith, but in the main timeline, everyone seen Aerith died and only Cloud sees the world he created, which is why he’s repressing and is certain he saved Aerith. So, the Jenova Aerith idea comes down to the moment after her death. Now, I’m not hundred on board with the ending depicting Jenova Aerith, so much is just Cloud losing his sanity to cope, that his reality IS the one where he saved her, but it’s true (as you pointed out about a corpse taking being eerie and creepy) that the ending is filled with uncertainty, dread, and tragedy. I think that’s by design, because It’s possible that Sephiroth is getting desperate (since he underestimated Aerith’s ability to help Cloud in the final battle of Rebirth. My guess, if we do end up seeing Aerith in the Final Part of the Trilogy, it will be suspicious, part of Sephiroth’s plan to further manipulate Cloud into becoming his vessel of reunion. I think Sephiroth’s true endgame is to ultimately become one with Cloud, so he can truly live forever with in his memory, just like how he keeps saying since Advent Children “I will never be just a memory” Basically, Dark Clouds Ahead.

Dark Cloud is gonna be so insane to see! The second I saw him put that black Materia in his sword I knew this game is going to a darker place! It is also gonna be interesting to see Sephiroth using Aerith a manipulation tool in part 3. There was also a quote Sephiorth/Cloud says “she becomes those you fear, those you hate, those you love” which could be foreshadowing that part as well 👀

@@Suhtired it was also explicit said by the mural ghost in the temple of the ancients (right before the party fight the wall demons) they mentioned that their civilization was brought down from within when Jenova “took the form of dead loved ones” which is easily overlooked when you think about how the lifestream usually takes back both the body and spirit. However, there are exceptions like the Gi Tribe or even someone like Jessie’s dad, who was comatose. Almost like Jenova took over a body whose spirits in the Lifestream to fool her prey.

I think the rainbow eff is "future cloud" effect Because the whispers were trying to stop the gang from interfering and saving Aerith, then when Cloud's sword glints with rainbowness and he "saves" her, all whispers get the hell away from the gang and suddenly, no he didn't save her.

As much as i like zack and aerith keeping them alive in the end of part 3 would not make any sense….ff7 story has always been about loss and tragedy and overcoming them so it would be pretty lame if they get a corny “everyone lives except for the villain” ending, but the developers did say that the ending will lead into advent children and in AC aerith and zack were dead and meet in the life stream so hopes up.

This was very ambiguous like way too ambiguous tbh and no theory is really correct now. We can call her lifestream Aerith but then we have a very sinister feeling presented at the water while saying contradictory stuffs to Cloud like her main goal was to stop cloud from loosing himself and not chase Sephiroth infinitely yet here we are she goes 180 and wants Cloud to go after him while talking about a meteor that is... Nowhere to be seen because for it to be summoned the actual body of Sephiroth needs to get hold of it which is in Cloud's possession the end Aerith (not the Sephiroth fight one) makes it feel like we have a manifestation of Aerith from Jenova similar to Glenn with Rufus but it gets contradicted by Red and then her goodbye. The other stuff is that if these timeline shenanigans are actually timelines or lifestream dream worlds that will ultimately return and get destroyed anyway and then the game just shows if we have an Aerith that is alive somewhere else Sephiroth can just hunt those versions down so I dunno if the Aerith is alive in another timeline means anything significant. The weird thing here is that the tear in Sky has an eerie similarity to the tear in the sky during Tifa's and Cloud's lifestream segment in original which would be impressive if that's what is actually happening here. Nonetheless these theories are all over the place and all of them could actually happen I just hope SE can commit to something because it feels like the entire "timeline" stuff has been backpedaled Zack is barely present and the game is 95% pretty faithful with some expanded context or areas like Gongaga.

Theory crafting Theory 1: Multiverse theory - Jenova creates a multiverse to find a universe where she will come out on top. 48:45 My theory here, is not that the rainbow signifies "changing the timeline," but rather creating an alternate. A rainbow is created by light being separated by a prism. You saw in Zack's (Terrier Stamp) universe he had to choose between Biggs and Cloud, he chose to try to save Cloud and then the rainbow shot off to the left, like a prism separating time into a new universe where he chose to save Biggs and in that one, Stamp is now a Pug. 8:40 I think the different Stamps indicate a different universe. It's almost like the whispers kept everything confined to one universe. But when we destroyed Fate/Destiny in Remake, we created a multiverse. It looks like in this moment; we saw a universe where Cloud saves Aerith, but then that prism effect happens. But Masamune was clean. Then we see a big static burst and suddenly there's blood? Did Jenova use the whispers to shift us into a universe where Cloud didn’t save Aerith? Is that why there was so much static & blipping back and forth? I think Jenova has control of the whispers of fate and is trying to create a timeline where she wins the endgame. Once she secures that timeline, she could have a reunion, not only of her cells, but of all the timelines merging them into the one of her choosing. Aerith is basically the only entity other than Jenova that seems to be, on any level, aware of this, at least aware enough to affect it. I think that's why it was so important for Jenova to shift the reality to Aerith dying. Aerith was the only real threat to her. But this should mean that Aerith still exists somewhere else. Theory 2: What if bringing Zack into "Beagle Stamp" universe will be the ripple that becomes a wave and changes the endgame? 46:22 Aerith: "All I want... is one thing, to keep the others safe." If you remember in the OG, when Aerith prays for holy, the holy materia glows pale green. Even when the materia falls from her hair in the OG, it’s glowing pale green. However, 49:23 Holy isn't glowing pale green... Sure didn't seem like she was praying for Holy. She was praying to save everyone. What if bringing Zack into the fold is how she does it? (However, if Aerith still exists on another plane, we could still see Holy brought into the story later.) 2:30:39 The materia inside the weapons glows pale green. The next thing you see is Zack in a sector 5 church where the flowers are blooming. Remember the sector 5 church blew up in Zack's universe? Here is my guess: Cloud saving Aerith created a new timeline. However the timeline he is on can not be denied as it had already happened. Aerith had to die as she already died...however she also did not due to the fact he just saved her in the newly created timeline which just split off. As Zack said...timelines could unite again...in fact they have to as only one timeline can exist and become the true dominant one in the end. The others will vanish when this happens. Aerith IS still alive, but only in the newly created timeline. The timelines have to unite first for it to truly become reality. This is what will happen in part 3. For now only Cloud can see the alive Aerith, but that will no doubt change soon when the worlds start to unite again. Red, while he can't see her, can still sense Aerith's other still existing self due to his own deep connection to the livestream. Aerith, due to who she is can travel between worlds to a limited degree. From the very start of the game in part 1 Cloud has been able to see changes/premonitions in the lime-line. Something must have happened in the original game to send back his memories or give him the ability to see alternate timelines/a premonition. The changes he currently makes create more split timelines which will all come together in part 3. (Hence why we have so many different pictures of the dogs)

Theory: I think sephiroth is playing with Cloud's head to see where the "real" Black Materia is. Remember Aerith said it is a fake. So Aerith knows where it is. And Sephiroth is leading Cloud to find the real one by using the fake Black Materia he merged on his blade. Which i think that blade may be used for something...again... The other world Aerith is currently in the lifestream world, where Tifa was that can view different memories or even the future. She is gonna pray there to stop Meteor. This ability she got was from the White Materia she got from her mom maybe. Noticed when she was, you know poked, the materia fell into the water. And Aerith now cannot leave the area due to not having that materia anymore or possibly coz her body is not available in that world. She was then given by Cloud another one from the other world. Then she absorbs it. The memories. Giving Cloud the empty one. This in turn Cloud is able to communicate with Aerith in the other world at the same time while he has the empty white materia is with him. I believe Aerith cannot become one with the lifestream due to being half Cetra. I think her half is Gi probably wrong. Didnt get to remember much on remake. (i dont consider OG the same game as this). So she is turned maybe an immortal in that world and guiding both planets to safety. Thus Advent Children appearance which is 2 years later.

Brianna Rocked the role of Aerith. I think Aerith is going to stay dead. Cloud was only able to see her because he was pulled into her dream world. Sephiroth took Cloud to the edge of creation(in remake). It why he can see other outcomes of Aerith death. So that why he can only see fragments of his timeline. As for Tifa glitches she was in the lifestream so maybe she saw glimpses as well. At least that’s how I saw it. I think Aerith will stay dead. For me though I really loved the Loveless play cause it was just so funny, and I loved the cosmo canyon area 2. I love red as well, definitely my favorite lab rat dog. Cloud thinks he saved Aerith, This is obvious when he has a mental episode sitting near the lake where he layed her to rest in OG, he sees visions of Aerith dying, but then he just turns right and sees her before him, smiling and feeling reasured that he saved her. At the end, when he is going onto the ship, he thinks Aerith is going back to the forgotten capital to pray to stop meteor, while he and the party is going north to stop Sephiroth himself. It's not metaphorical, at least not to him. Now whether this is all just Cloud coping mechanism or he actually created a new timeline where Aerith lived (I think most of the evidence points to this) remains to me seen

This is probably a dumb theory but... what if Aerith's soul didn't go to the lifestream? What if it went inside that White Materia? I don't know maybe I'm just thinking out of my ass but there was something strange going on with Aerith's Materia. I mean her Materia was just 'Blank' at first and then Cloud got the actual 'White Materia' from what I am assuming is 'another timeline Aerith' whom Sephiroth tracked down to stop her from helping Cloud. So... Cloud has two White Materias? Maybe the Blank Materia Aerith had actually contained her soul, that's why she calls the Forgotten Capital (City of the Ancients) her second home? I don't know this whole shit confuses me, you can't really put it simply as she is dead and that's not when the timelines lore got dropped and that this is not the OG (where we know that she is 'dead dead').

Him not having the ribbon at Biggs? He clearly has it in the tunnel. Not sure about the Shinra building. Maybe he put it away when he started fighting? I concede that sense posting this I’ve watched the ending sequence a few more times and the date scene in sector 5 is definitely “a version of Aerith.” My argument is that the Aerith that Zach rescues from the helicopter and the Aerith that is galavanting around with Cloud are different Aeriths. This ending absolutely emotionally wrecked me. And me personally i loved it. I like to think of it as Aerith dying on her own terms. Throughoht the series, its strongly implied that Aerrith knows she will die (hence that whole scene where she gives cloud the white materia) and in the end she lived on through Cloud. Aerith had a heroic death and one that she accepted. The remake series is about Aerith accepting death.

Loved your reaction but I have to say your theory about aerith is false. When cloud entered that that whisper wall before finding aerith he entered two timelines at once so when he saves her he does but in an alternate timeline where she lived. The current timeline he did not save her and sephiroth actually talks about the timelines after killing aerith. Cloud can see into multiple timelines which is how he could see an aerith alive and one that was dead.

That could be possible she’s alive in a different timeline but we don’t know for sure. I truly believe the Aerith we see is communicating through the lifestream (except the one after Cloud’s glitchy moment cause I think that one is a manipulation). But some people pointed out that the blood on the sword from sephiroth after we “saved” her can be an indication that she dies in all timelines. This is all speculation of course and we won’t know till the third part comes out unfortunately 😞

You have to understand japanese culture and behavior, because Final Fantasy is a japanese game. The significance of holding hands with fingers interlocking (not sure how accurate it is) but they state "two people intertwining their fingers while holding hands is called 恋人つなぎ (koibito tsunagi, “lover’s connection”) in Japanese culture." And not only does that happen on Cloud and Aeriths date, it happens at the end of the final battle and is the trophy picture for completing said chapter. Cloud wanting photos of Aerith and him is a nod to Advent Children, cause in this movie Cloud didnt had any photo of Aerith.

I think Jenova is messing with Cloud and Red was able to sense Jenova as Aerith as well. I think I know where this is going and it follows the moves Jenova is going to make with Red XIII and Cloud later.

I’m kinda 50/50 on if the Aerith Cloud sees is legit her or a manipulation. I do think the one near the water was a manipulation but the one in the grass field could be her communicating through the lifestream.

I think tifa thinks cloud killed aerith. You see it in her expression when she sees him holding aerith with blood on the hands.Sephiroth is going to mess with her since she was exposed while she was in the lifestream. She's lost all faith in him after being silent at end.

I don't want to offend anyone but I find this whole timeline thing so messy and poorly done, Aerith's death could have been one of the biggest emotional moments of the last 20 years in video games with such production but the messy and confusing staging ruined the whole dramatic effect for me. I have the impression that the goal of this multiverse is just to satisfy the ego of all the fanbases..

1000% I agree! I really hate when a character does something noble and selfless by sacrificing themselves and they make us mourn for the character just to bring them back. I love Zack and Aerith so much but if they somehow stay alive at the end of part 3 then it’s gonna be a let down.

I get it..I really do. But let’s give the developers who have said “we love the OG,” some credit. I think until we see the final product, we can’t fully critique what the story is. B)I can’t think the team would solely make a multiverse to satisfy the fanbase. Why? Because the original story was built from a very personal story. It would be shocking if that happened. A lot has changed, the developers prob saw “hey fans want a remake, they also keep trying to get aerith saved…maybe we can work with that?” C)the multiverse didn’t work as well. Because the worlds mentioned don’t follow a “what if” scenerio. In fact it seems more like worlds are temporarily created only to die. Those who are saved (for unknown reasons for now), are put into these worlds but will face destiny regardless. So Zack will always face down soldiers, Biggs gets killed by Shinra, Zack only seems to survive by not doing soemthing (this Zack choose to not go to hojo or save biggs). Yeah it gets confusing…but until the end…part 3 basically now has to make or break it.

Everything rides on part 3 trying to make sense of it and then there's a lot riding on with the Cloud x Tifa lifestream segment as well I think the latter will be phenomenal considering how good the tease of it in chapter 9 was but I'm fairly certain the ending is gonna get fumbled I really don't see how can they make this story with all these plotholes and ambiguity into something cohesive
