Kuja is honestly one of the most deep and interesting characters in the series, there is a reason in the Dissidia projects Kuja is always highlighted with so much growth, the moment he died in FF9 was tragic because he was just on the cusp of being able to redeem himself, that being able to explore his motivations after that point is so rich from a story standpoint. I wish there was a way to have a FF9-2 and bring Kuja back without it feeling forced or undeserved.

Kuja really is one of my top2 FF-villains, and I think this video did him justice. Two things I'd like to add though: Kuja did engage Zidane and the group the first time in order to get mortally wounded, because that was neccessary to trigger trance. And during their second battle, Kuja realized that his time was almost over, thus ending the fight instantly.

Yesssssss my boy!!!!! Seeing this got me really excited!! I love Kuja so much, FFIX was my first FF and will always have a special place in my heart. I remember as a kid seeing Kuja for the first time in the cutscene after Beatrix wipes the floor with Zidane and co and just staring in awe as he looks at the group like their dirt on his boot and then heads to Silver dragon and flies off. Truly to me he was one great villain.
@FlashRayLaser6 ай бұрын
It's such a telling scene about the power disparity between the party and Kuja; not only do we learn that we're hopelessly beneath just Beatrix via gameplay mechanics, we're left wondering how powerful Kuja himself must be because he didn't even have to lift a finger to help Beatrix utterly decimate us, all while it was evident we were considered light work like standard mist fiends and he would have stepped in at the point we presented her any real challenge whatsoever, but we don't. We basically learn we're not even close in power to someone who herself isn't even close in power to Kuja. Rather we can't even beat the lesser of our challenges in a 4 vs 1. It drives the point home. It's a bit like how VII briefly gives access to Sephiroth's combat abilities in a flashback to show us what we're dealing with in a hard numbers kind of way instead of just constantly saying he's more powerful.

AT LAST!! The most FABULOUS FF antagonist gets the attention he deserves!! Kuja really resonated with me. I was a sheltered boy who's never known to think beyond the path my parents laid before me. I pursued a career I didn't want and I gave very little value to the people I met along the way. This was until college, when I was forced to interact with and rely on people more & really get to know them. Whereas Zidane showed me that you can learn to establish your own feeling of home by learning to treasure friends & being treasured by them in return, Kuja showed me how destructive I could have been if I cared little about anything other than myself. To this day, simply thinking about FF9 causes me to get all teary. By the way, I think it bears mentioning how much growth you can see in Kuja through the Dissidia games. I believe it's thanks to knowing how precious life is that he was among those who questioned the senselessness of eternal violence and actively undermined Chaos during the 12th cycle through cunning means. Come Dissidia NT, he drops the facade altogether and teams up with Zidane & Terra. THE GROWTH!

When I first played FF9 - Kuja meant a lot to me in terms of being free to express oneself in an unusual and feminine way (despite being male). I think this played a role in self-acceptance and being proud of being/having what I have. In Kuja's case, he only got redemption at the end of the game - but in real life his approach was very powerful and impactful for me.
@aliciaerjavec4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so so much for creating this video. ((Be prepared because I am going to gush XD)) Kuja is undoubtedly one of my favorite Final Fantasy villains. He’s one that we can almost relate to in terms of his fear of dying and wishing to have your life be prolonged; not only that, he is one of the first sympathetic villains in the franchise. Yes you Caius Ballad and Ardyn Izunia, but Kuja was the first one, and the one whose sympathetic notes continue on in other games such as the Dissidia series. While he may not have conquered Alexandria or Gaia as a whole, or even Terra for that matter, he still won by essentially destroying the crystal and bringing forth Necron, the very being of death itself, and nearly destroying the continuation of the universe. (That scene where he destroys Terra is still so beautiful...imagine that in a remake!) Many people underestimate Kuja because of his feminine appearance and his childish personality (even his own villainous comrades do), but if you found out that you were going to die soon but didn’t know when, you’d probably go on a murderous rampage too. But even then, when he was dying under the Ilfa tree, he still mustered up everything within him so he could have the opportunity to be the good guy, even if it took his breath away. It’s interesting to note that he’s similar to Ultimecia, who only wished to be remembered, which is why she wanted time compression in the first place; he’s actually a character who is remembered, and not in a bad or pitiful way like Sephiroth either, his own baby sister says that it was his desire to be an independent instead of someone conformed to what Garland had in mind for him (even though he was created that way, and some parts of his mentality show that) that helped her and the other genomes to be their own beings as well, which is what he wanted: to have a legacy that will be remembered. Anyway, thank you again for making this video on my favorite peacock. 💜

Pretty sure Sephiroth was before Kuja and the first to be seen as sympathetic. A once legitmate hero, who had an unfortunate fate upon discovering his conception , misinterpreting his origin and correcting what he thought was a flaw. All because of a sadistic scientist. It may not be on the nose like Kuja but we the player and the characters know about Sephiroth more than he truly knows about himself .

Hi - first of all, amazing video! I enjoyed your analysis of Kuja and this was a really well put video you made, especially with the conclusion! I’ll be looking forward to your future analyses! I’ve never commented on a video before, and I find myself feeling a little nervous to post this, but this video is about Kuja so I cannot help myself. Second, Kuja for me is such an extraordinary villain. I found myself relating to him a lot, with his love for art and especially his profound loneliness. I think he is the character I could relate to the most in the entire Final Fantasy franchise; like him, I am the eldest in my family, so I could understand his anger and jealousy when Zidane was meant to replace him. I also understood his loneliness very well - throughout the game, it seems that he doesn’t connect with many people very much, and doesn’t seem to have many friends besides his Silver Dragon. When I first played the game, I was experiencing a rough time in my new high school. I didn’t have any friends ; nor did I know anyone that could possibly help me adjust to the new environment. Thus, I was stuck with my own thoughts for eight hours a day. The loneliness really got to me, and I can’t imagine how Kuja must have felt spending all his time alone in a spacious palace with no one to share it with. It is due to my experience with loneliness that led me to believe that the reason why he spoke about his plans to Queen Hilda was the possible idea of his own loneliness. Perhaps he wanted for someone to just listen to him for once, or wanted someone to stop him. Throughout the game, he manages to lose those that accompanied him throughout his journey, with his Silver Dragon, Zorn & Thorn being examples of what the player, or Zidane, took away from him. I like to believe that the reason he talks and laughs to himself a lot is simply due to the fact that he has no one else - he had to learn how to be friends with himself since he didn’t have anyone to be there for him. I think this led to his narcissism, since I suppose he went overboard with loving himself. However, these are just my two cents. It could very well be that I am over analyzing him or just input my experiences onto his, but whatever the reason, Kuja was no doubt my favorite character of Final Fantasy IX, added along with Vivi and Freya. In fact, I find it very much a coincidence that I was saving fanart of him earlier this week to cheer myself up a bit - and I see this video pop up! So thank you very much for making this video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 😊

@@DerTypausBielefeld are you kidding? what is bad about FF9's story telling?
@DerTypausBielefeld4 жыл бұрын
@@lt6899 Are you kidding me? What is actually good about the storytelling of FF9? Like I said, I really love FF9, and I think the replay value is higher than FF7 because there are so many things to discover, so many secrets to unlock. It's a wonderful game, the story is just garbage, though. The biggest problem with the game is that the developers actually decided to split the first CD into two. It took me some times to realize what happen. FF7 had three CDs. FF8 had four CDs. And since they were able to get so many information on so less space, FF9 actually only needed 3 CDs again although the story is just as long as FF7 and 8. So the developers thought this was a bad idea, for this looks like a decrease. So they decided to split the first CD into 2. So not only that each character wasn't introduced on first CD like it should be, and the barealy managed to introduce the last one at the very end of CD2. But it also means that we can not explore the world on the second CD like it should be, which actually lowers the fun of playing in comparison to the other FF games before. So everything happened on the third CD. And if you think about the fact how MUCH they put on the third CDRom, there's no doubt about the fact that everything on the first two CDs could have been on one CD only, which was what they originaly had in mind. So it means you get the ship in order to explore the world way too late in the game on the third CD and you can only go to two towns (the chocobo quest aside) with the ship before you actually lose it again. And then you finally get an aircraft like in the other games before, but also rather at the end of the third CD and way too late, so you can also explore 3 dungeons before you actually lose it again also (the chocobo quest aside). The next big problem with the story is that is actually made a complete foul of itself when Kuja destroyed Terra, which means everything we saw, everything the game was actually about, Terra vs. Gaia, was just a waste and it was all just for nothing. So it had no conclusion, no ending, nothing, which is why everything afterwards, I mean after Kuja destroyed Terra, is just crazy and the story went totally out of control. And I only began to explain the problems with the story, which are far more. I only talked about the two main problems.
@lordsoth52764 жыл бұрын
@@DerTypausBielefeld So it sounds like your biggest problem with the game is the number of discs? That’s a technical problem, it has nothing to do with the story. And from the point you tried to make about “Terra vs Gaia” and everything before meaning nothing, that leads me to believe you didn’t fully understand the story. Give the game another play my dude.
@DerTypausBielefeld4 жыл бұрын
@@lordsoth5276 My biggest problem was the number of discs? Did you even read my comment before you wrote your answer? And Terra vs. Gaia meant nothing? I don't think whether I'm going to answer you again, for you don't even read them... The thing is that I need to explain again for no reason that the characters should have been introduced at the beginning of the game since it was like this in any other FF game, and it actually isn't that fun when you have them in your party when the game has already progressed for such a long time. But they barely managed to introduce the last character, who they didn't know what they should make with him anyway, at the end of dics 2. And it wouldn't have been such a problem in the other two FF games before, but it was in FF9 because this game is all about character development, which means, if you have them in their party, they haven't learned any ability yet, so you have to teach them everything again that you already did with the other characters. And you should have already been able to explore the world like in any other game at the middle of the game. But instead you could do that rather at the end of the game, on disc 3 - way too late. And since the ship was introduced so late, you can't actually do much with it, as for the aircraft later, which also came way too late. And Gaia vs. Terra was what FF9 was actually all about. The other things that were going on were actually nothing but filler, for the developers couldn't manage to get to the point with the story. But if this part of the story means nothing, why did they see that on Oil Vert, why did they go to Terra, why did they fight Garlant (who obviously has no power of Zidane anymore all the sudden and couldn't teleport anymore for no reason)? Why was this "Brane" attacking everyone around her for no reason unless it wasn't the final war going on on Gaia like Garlant told us later in order to conquer Gaia. Everything was actually all about this story. But they couldn't get the hang of it. So they decided that Kuja destroys Terra in his wrath, so everything was useless all the sudden and had no conclusion, so everything went totally crazy after that, for they didn't know what to do with the story anymore, at all. And like I said, that weren't only 2 main problems. There are way more, but I don't like to express them all right here, especially since you are not even reading properly anyway. Give the game another play? Like I didn't play it 1 week ago?
@lordofinnistrad87574 жыл бұрын
Kuja would hold a special place in my heart under any circumstances as the villain of the first Final Fantasy game I ever played. But the fact that he’s such a nuanced and well-written villain makes him truly special in my eyes. He will always be one of my favorite villains in all of gaming.
@Buliwyf903 жыл бұрын
you have missed one of the most important parts of kuja's character: he was created like just another genome, his ego and strong personality was not something garland expected, only after he came up with the "angel of death" plan. The entire charaterization of kuja (his mannerism, his looks) derives from his strong desire to affirm himself as an individual, rather than as a empty genome, like a puppet. That his the irony of him creating the black mages and considering them useless puppets. In the end Kuja was to the genomes, what Vivi was to the black mages

He was summoned out of the sheer despair and death when Kuja cast Ultima and all souls of the dead were trapped in the Zero world. Necron appeared to basically "reset" everything back to nothingness, saying that all life wished to perish because that is all that he could feel in the lost souls of Gaia/Terra. Zidane obviously refutes this saying that not all life wishes to perish and then literally fights the embodiment of absolute Death proving his and others will to live and continue. @frozendevil95494 жыл бұрын
I thought I was the only one who noticed. Meliodas and Zidane have a similar base appearance (short blonde guys), and both of them use daggers. Also both of them are perverts, especially towards the princess. And you can’t tell me Mel’s demon assault form doesn’t just look like a black version of Zidane’s trance m.imgur.com/IKz1xQE i.pinimg.com/originals/40/4c/de/404cdec57145c271fed60c4cf3c66768.png

I can imagine Kuhn saying this to another character in opera Omnia. Kuja: I will be the one standing, I am the antithesis to this fascade of the world and it is already happening Like Zidane and his friends, destroy Zidane and his friends, Conquer Alexandria, Save Alexandria, Create Black Waltz Mages , Destroy Black Waltz Mages . To me it is all a play and a show. Honestly I think Kuja is just jealous. He wanted to be human so bad it was literally on his face but then he saw Zidane and wanted things he had despite him and Zidane being made by Garland. He saw what Zidane could do and Zidane had so many things, his love for Princess Garnet, his friendships with Vivi, Freya, Eiko, even Steiner and the others. And if Kuja couldn’t get that no one could do he caused destruction and that has been his only plan, Period!
@rileyduncan39274 жыл бұрын
Kuja kind of reminds me of Sephiroth as they are both bio-engineered creations.
@FragmentedR_YT3 жыл бұрын
I think that’s the only similarity they have though, and I’d actually argue they’re complete opposites in their struggles. Sephiroth is most concerned with how he was given life, and how that should impact what he does, while Kuja can’t accept the fact that like all living creatures he too will die, so he decides that the world shouldn’t exist if he can’t exist with it. I’ve always thought of it like this: FFVII is a game about life, while FFIX is a game about death.

Real good video indeed You missed an official comic regarding Kujah and Vivi after the events of the tree´s destruction and prior to Zidane´s return. There we can see a wounded Kujah that arrives to the black mage´s village and meets Vivi who is almost at the end of his life. On this story we can see one more act of redemption from him. It is quite touching but I wont say anything else to avoid spoilers for those who would like to read it
@Dzzy1234 жыл бұрын
Can you explain what happens? I've never heard of this comic.
@KainH934 жыл бұрын
@@Dzzy123 Sure thing Well Kuja arrives heavily injured to the black mage village and there he meets Vivi who is confined on his bed due to the fact he cannot walk anymore cause his lifetime is almost over. On the village is also Eiko who obviously do not trust him but Vivi tells her is ok and also that kuja deserves to be forgiven. I cant tell you exactly what they both talked about cause i red that comic a while ago but what I can tell you is that they both engage on a pretty deep conversation about how we all deserve redemption if we are truly sorry for our sins and how no matter how short our life is the important part is the way we decide to live it (This last part comes from Vivi who even says he is grateful for being created and he thanks Kuja for that) After a short time Kuja ask Vivi what can he do for him to redeem himself, Vivi answers his mistakes are forgiven but he do have a last wish and that is the creation of the group of small black mages you see on the final scene which Kuja create for Vivi as a way to manifest Vivi´s legacy on this world (those black mages will have a more larger lifetime). When this is accomplished Vivi thanks Kuja and dies on his bed with a happy look on his eyes. And a few minutes after this Kuja thanks Vivi and this world for letting him do something good at the end and dies on the chair next to Vivi´s bed. They are found by the other villagers and Eiko after this and are burried together There are some other details which I cant recall but this is the important part I have been trying to fin the comic to share it with the community but I have not been able to find it Well thats it tell me when you read this

If the Terrans had only not given Garland free will while they were creating him, none of this would have happened. Without the free will, Garland would have stuck to the original plan the Terrans chose and only search for adequate planets without sentient life. I don't know what made him do everything the hard way, but surely within the millennia he was waiting for Gaias population to kill themselves, he could have found a different suitable planet and begun the restoration of his world. Gaias crystal was powerful because of all the souls and life energy flowing through it, whereas Terras was depleted. Should have stuck to the plan, Garland.
