In my youth, I recorded some footage from SNES FFII to introduce kids at school to the 16-bit era. Thanks to the imagery and cinematic nature of the game, some of my classmates said it was like watching a movie. It also taught me what a Paladin is, as the only other reference I had known before was the heart-shield wielding girls of Ultima: Exodus on NES.

I remember renting this at Blockbuster in 1991 shortly after getting my Super NES. Only 8 at the time and used to the NES, this game blew me away with its epic soundtrack, complex storylines, high level of challenge and beautiful graphics. While other Super NES RPGs would rank higher in preference for me like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (VI) and Earthbound, this was a very enjoyable game to dive deep and get into as a kid.

6:40 There's a big misunderstanding about Amano's contributions in Final Fantasy. His designs are not what appear in the game. He was there for a lot of it to create marketing and manual images. Retroactively in the remakes they tried to portray the characters as being based on Amano's art, but it was largely the other way around. Amano's art was based on Kazuko Shibuya's pixel art for most of the characters. shmuplations.com/kazukoshibuya/

Here it is. One of the two game that got me in to gaming, and the game that started my life long obsession with Japanese RPGs. This was one of the two additional games my dad got when we bought an SNES (The other being Zelda) I enjoyed both of them so much more than Mario. Man, I have so many amazing memories with this game. I would have only been around 3-4 at the time, but I tore in to the game with a passion that no other game at the time had elicited from me. Sure I dabbled in Mario, and I even played a few 8bit RPGs like the first FF, Dragon Warrior, and even Ultima on the NES, but this was the one.

Exactly the kind of retrospective I've been waiting for on this game, and there's still more. :D The audio will get its time in the sun later, but I'm grateful again for Actraiser's influence. That soundtrack was one of the first to make me just stop and listen as a child. I don't know if it would have been as marketable in the early 90's, but I dearly wish we had gotten that beautiful Amano artwork on our covers, especially in IV/2's case, but even Japan missed out on an Amano cover with this one. The GBA remake's cover would have been a thing of beauty and wonder to young!me, much like Katsuya Terada's Zelda artwork. It's sad that this specific version of the game is really the roughest of the bunch, but FFIV has received an unusually high amount of love on the remake front. I'd personally recommend the DS/iOS/PC release but the PSP Complete Collection is a solid choice as well and probably closer to the original intended experience. They're both far more polished and intact, each with far less clunky translations as well. This video touched on something I've missed: differing execution times for actions, especially spells. It's one of the extra sources of strategy and tension in many tabletop RPGs and the automated timekeeping seems like it would always be in easy fit for the concept. I do remember frantically trying to decide on my options in a clench back then and don't recall as much pressure in later entries. Eagerly awaiting the next video.

I actually didn't play FF4 until the Game Boy Advance release. I went straight from NES to N64 in my household since I was actually born the same year as the SNES which may have stifled my parent's finances, so while I played a lot of SNES games at my cousins' place RPGs weren't one of those being longform single player titles. From the viewpoint of someone in the Game Boy era, Dragon Warrior 3 was way better. More challenging, a flexible multiclassing system that required a lot of forethought and came with risks, a large open world with the extremely open ended 6 orbs quest. To me that was the RPG to beat and FF4 was a solid runner up with some clever ideas but a bit too simplistic in comparison, which coincidentally seems to be the Japanese opinion overall too. I ended up much more impressed with Square's 5th and 6th entries adding a lot of the team complexity back in. If only Enix hadn't so completely fumbled their releases and maybe given us DQ3 first in 1989 or passed over DQ2 to give us 3 in 1990 much like Square's decision to leapfrog their own second and third entries they would have had more success in the overseas market. Who can say for sure though?

The dungeons not making you turn back was such a revelation. I remember the marketing specifically stating that the game was designed around the idea of getting you to the proper level just by playing through it, e.g. the journey to the dungeon will level you up enough to take on the dungeon, fighting through the dungeon itself will have you ready to face the boss. This was a massive contrast to Dragon Quest, which was all about grinding in the same area at length until you tried to see if you were strong enough to move on, as well as the original Final Fantasy. Grinding for stats and money was the name of the game there. I still have memories of how long it took grinding up my party and earning cash for Mythril Swords in order to beat Astos.
@jonothanthrace15306 жыл бұрын
I never really thought about it before, but FF4 uses the concept of spell casting times from D&D, and especially the early versions, though it (wisely IMO) doesn't keep the idea of casters wasting their spells if they're attacked before the spell goes off.

One note I'd make is, although it's true that the turn-based aspect is something that came from pen-and-paper games and could stand to be left behind, there are a number of other design relics that JRPGs adhere to to this day, most notably experience levels, which is something most non-D&D-based pen-and-paper games have long since abandoned, and was looking pretty old in the tooth even in the days of Runequest, which is downright venerable.

I remember being furious with Square for a very long time after reading up on Final Fantasy II NES and before Final Fantasy Origins because after reading about how stat growth worked in the game and reading a story synopsis I was certain I would have loved the game. It is still either my fourth or fifth favorite Final Fantasy depending on my mood. II SNES/IV is ok but its pretty far down my favorite Final Fantasy list. I was playing PC RPGs like the Ultima, Wizardy and AD&D based games for a couple of years before I started playing NES RPGs and even longer before I played Final Fantasy II SNES/IV. I hated how linear the game was and the lack of party options but I did like the ATB system.
@willmatheson6 ай бұрын
The thing I don't like about the ATB here is that they don't give you a way to pass your turn on without doing something, except as by parrying. But V through IX would let you do that.

Final Fantasy Origins (1&2) on PlayStation was fantastic, and Final Fantasy Chronicles and Anthology caught us up and helped fix the order of titles. The redone graphics and format made the first two better than original.

When I was younger I was preferential toward the more straightforward definition of "turn based" (what can I say, I was a FFX kid), but my first play through of FFV changed that. I still enjoy the FFX style of battle (who doesn't like having infinite time to make decisions??), but ATB makes it feel more intense, especially when you've wandered your way into some serious sh*t. Also, this gets my vote for best SNES Works episode title.

FF10's battle system was good for the fact that character speed actually mattered, whereas with other systems it generally doesn't at all.

While I love the idea overtime I found myself not really enjoy the ATB system as I once did. It made spells a bit less useful than in pure turn base system. Felt Buffs/Debuffs are as useful because of the nature of it wearing off so quickly. And casting damaging spells takes a bit longer than I like so I found myself using more physical attacks with casters because it felt like it is a better use of my time to do it. It's a great idea and happy they thought up a whole new idea of how JRPG plays I just personally enjoy more Wizardry/Dragon Quest style combat over ATB.

Again, I know I'm in the minority as a gamer, but except for FF8, FF4 remains my favorite game in the franchise. I think a player's opinion on the game will inevitably be decided by the player's opinion on the story, which at that point in '91, I was 16 and fell in love with this game and these characters. It made a profound enough impact that I still remember that on the same night I got to Palom and Porum turning themselves to stone, my family went and saw Hook in the theater. That I have this memory at all, let alone the emotions that I associate with both, is indicative of the effect they had on me.

themblan I say this with the SNES games being my favorite entrees, but I never really "got"the appeal of the atb system. Battles would feel faster and a whole lot snappier if characters didn't have to wait for their actions to queue up. I also don't like to be rushed through a turn in what's supposed to be a game about strategy. I'm not here to say "you're wrong" though, I'm genuinely curious as to what your thoughts are. Addendum: Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve make great use of ATB, it's also the best part of FFX-2.

since most of the games I have as actual cartridges these days are Super Famicom games, and the rest are for a PAL system (As befitting where I've lived in my life - since my original SNES, which was stolen around 1993-94ish, was a PAL model. I learnt about most SNES titles well after the fact, often through emulation in the early 2000's, since getting the real deal was difficult by then, and I was dirt poor for good measure, plus focused on the n64 and PC games for hardware I did actually still own), I have access to final fantasy 5 and 6 as Super Famicom cartridges (not 4 though), and I have to say how unbelievably ugly FF5 (and by the looks of it, 4) actually are in hindsight. Final Fantasy 6 won't win any beauty prizes either for SNES games (unlike Square's own Secret of Mana games, or the likes of Tales of Phantasia, and to a lesser extent, visually at least, Terranigma and Chrono Trigger, say.), but it looks reasonably good for the most part, even if it's a bit rough around the edges in quite a few places. But FFV? Ooh boy is that ugly. Like REALLY ugly. Not consistently, but... Often. And in ways that would not leave all that good of an impression even for an 8 bit system, much less a 16 bit system. One thing you can say about early Square... Their games may have been innovative and genre defining, and fun to play, but they sure weren't lookers... (As an aside on visual appeal, Seiken Densetsu 3 is actually quite ugly when seen through the lens of what most people would experience the game as in the real world - on a CRT television through a composite video connection. However, it becomes truly stunning seen on a system outputting through RGB Scart or something equivalent. Where the likes of Super Mario World and Sonic contain dithering effects that look decent on composite but not so great on RGB, Seiken Densetsu 3 almost looks like it was purpose-made for RGB with the developers not even really thinking about the horrible effect a composite connection would have on the image.)

"O.G.S" is What ruined&ruins these n all games is cheats, walkthroughs, secrets etc. - KNOWLEDGE!!! That is exactly what takes all edges off these games. If we could take a dumbedDowner pill so as to have that virgin kid feel while playing these, that is exactly what's needed for old guy syndrome.

Okay this criticism is not aimed at Square at all, at Gamers who have a narrow mind set. I have played a number of RPGs from Shogun on Commodore 64 to D&D 5E. The dynamics of role play is undoubtfully one of the cornerstones of the genre. Yet linear story telling is the norm on console. It fine if you like a set procedural timeline where you cannot chart the outcome but as this KZbin has make clear...His view being that dynamics cripple RPGs is false based on facts. Elder Scrolls, Gold Box games like Shattered Suns, and even more modern titles like Pillar of Eternity show that if done with a creative team and good understanding of the engineering these kinds of games can make huge impacts on the genre no matter what platform you are playing on. By the way, Drakhen is a horrid choice when Shattered Suns was out durring the time of Final Fantasy and had advantages in turn that Final Fantasy could not muster till Final Fantasy 5 and not seen a revival of till 10 which is customization of how a character can be tuned. By this time Diablo had all but dominated Final Fantasy and Elderscrolls had alread released Marrowwind proving linear RPGs were not the only way to play RPGs. Just the preferred by casual players.

Super Mario World was tame? Really. Super Nintendo was very powerful but not perfect.

I’m so confused. I have never seen or heard of Game Dude but his content reads like an intentionally stupid parody of angry game reviews. Is he supposed to be taken seriously?

Great video overall, but really tired of seeing FFXIII so ignorantly shit on even all these years later. Final Fantasy as a series deserves better respect than that. Any fan can recognize there was nothing particularly wrong with FFXIII (hence its critical reception) that hadn't been much much more wrong in the series before without major issue (ironically like the linearity mentioned later here). It's just really tiring to see. :/ Just a tangent though.

Chill, chief. I reviewed all three FFXIII games professionally and gave them all high marks to brighten up their Metacritic average.

@@JeremyParish This is less at you and more in general/at commenters, so just me shouting into the void basically. I understand that it was hardly even a passing statement in your video overall and that this is an older video, too. Your video was definitely still great.
