I think on top of the game aging like wine as you outlined, the narrative really resonates more with an adult audience. I remember playing IX when it came out and finding it largely forgettable, but then again I was 15 in 2000. I recently replayed the whole series, excluding XI, and IX is probably my new favorite. It's themes of mortality, purpose, destiny and choice, what it means to have a soul and free will, all hit harder when you're at a point in your life where you no longer feel invincible and reflect on where you've been, where you're going, and where you want to be. I also used the Moguri mod on my recent playthrough which provides some great QoL changes and modernizations.

I'm playing it on Switch, just got to the start of disc 3. It's nice because they've included a couple new features like no encounters, automatically hitting for 9999, and a fast forward button. I haven't been using the cheats but have been using the fast forward a good bit to make the conversations go quicker. It's still just as fun as it ever was, I didnt beat it back in the day when it was released and I'm just about to the point where I stopped playing back then

I never got to finish it. I was a young kid and left it on pause for half a day. When I got back it was frozen and the Playstation was what I would call overheated. It had a ring around the middle of the data on the 4th disc and would freeze everytime I got to a specific FMV... never got to finish it. I watched a friend finish it once though

I've said it before, I can't recommend Moguri Mod enough. Years ago, it was the first example I'd seen of an AI upscale done right, and it's only become better with time. I noticed in the mod loader there's the option to use "absolute orientation" now, so analog control doesn't follow D-pad paths. It's nice to finally hold a direction on the stick and expect to move in that direction. I hope that one day I won't have to hold a button to run, as well! Mad props to those crazy devs who've pulled this game apart and helped rebuild it into a true definitive edition. FFIX is one of my faves.

I would actually recommend giving FFXIV a shot if you're not playing it already. It has an absolutely insanely generous Free Trial that includes the base game, A Realm Reborn, and its first two expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, and everything that comes with them except for Ultimate Raids. Give it an honest shot and decide it's not for you? Then it cost you nothing but a little time.

The only people who thought it was a detour was the fans that came later. I am a OG fan going back to the old then FFII and now FFIV. I did eventually play the other earlier games, But FFIV was the first incredible FF Game. I remember going to my friend's house to play some games through the night on his playstation. We had a PC at the time and mostly played on it, But we were trying to ask our parents for a Playstation! That night they got tired and my friend told me that I could play any game I'd like as long as I don't overwrite save data. So I looked through the many games he had and saw it. FF VII and FF IX. The art design on the disc made me choose FF IX and I played it straight through the night and I noticed that my friend did not have save data on the game. The end of that month we got our Playstation and I asked my friend if I could loan FF IX. At the time we got a game with our playstation that me and my brother didn't care about and my friend asked if we could just swap. That is the story. Still have those discs and the FF VII ones I traded for later, as he didn't play it either.

I love this mod its really refreshing and an amazing job but I have on trouble that mess up my playthrough, I have a lot of letters missing during scenes and I never found any solution : uninstall completly done repair done try to change language same (I was playing in french at the begining but even in english I have this trouble) so unfortunately I had never been able to finish my first experience with moguri

This game doesnt need a remake! Everything which was remade in the past 10 years resulted in censorship. Zidanes buttgrab on Dagger would be removed Eiko being in deep love for Zidane would be removed Dagger undressing with Steiner nearby would be removed And many other stuff.

id say ff9 and ff6 hold a far more sold story structure and have more depth within the game to explore. also not talking about the universe as concepts but the allownce of ff9 into its world is 3 to1 compared to ff7 or ff8

I feel so attacked as a cheapskate because I refuse to buy the game a second time even at that price and the rebuilt engine doesn't work with the PS1 version of the game. the mod downloader is actually required for most of the mods and it is trash. Especially if you have a slow internet connection. It will freeze on you and force you to start all over many many many times. And the mod creators will not allow you to download the mod with a torrent or other normal downloading site because they want you to go through the mod manager which is rididculous. It is like they have DRM on a mod bro. a mod.
