Part of the genius of this scene is how the music reflects what is happening. The chords tell you that this song should be slow and sad, but instead the tempo keeps driving it forward. Also, the score starts rather thin, with only a couple of instruments, but has more instruments joining in as it progresses. The instruments represent Zidane's companions, rushing to his side and telling him not to give up. The theme of this whole scene is: "You've done so much for all of us. Now it's our turn. You are not alone."

After bonding with the characters for so long it really hits the player (at least in my case) very hard. To see the party come together to help Zidane confront his biggest fear of loneliness, after he helped them all confront their demons, it’s a special moment.

One of the really neat things about this scene is how the pairings Zidane encounters (Vivi/Eiko, Amaranth/Freya, Quina/Steiner) are all kind of "odd couples," characters who had nothing to do with each other prior to the journey but are now working together. It adds a lot to the whole theme of companionship in this scene.

Never thought about it this way! Literally these individuals would likely never have met and certainly most likely wouldnt be even be friends if it wasnt in part thanks to Zidane. Nice insight :)

It's true. I always appreciated that, outside the context of the adventure, each of these pairs would have been totally alienated by the other. Eiko and Vivi are a good way to set the tone, both of whom would be totally alone without the party.

Without a doubt the greatest scene in the history of the franchise. Whole game built up to it, with Zidane spreading infectious positivity to everyone at their lowest, only to have them pay it back when he needed someone to lean on. They refused to give up on him, even if he gave up on himself.

The whole scene pretty much is the pinnacle of everything that Final Fantasy once stood for: No matter how hard the fight, no matter how desperate the situation. There will ALWAYS be people joining you in your darkest hours and help you out, be there for you and help you throughout the darkest of times, no matter the cost. No matter how alone you might feel; You Are Not Alone.

But after that (including the cute scene of him and Tifa), everyone returned and wanted to join the fight. What makes this scene work for me is how Zidane's friends don't really catch that he's in his darkest hour right away. They stand by his side as a matter if course, and so when they actively try to remind him they have his back, you know it's the truth and not simply sparing his feelings.

It shows that loved one in need not wanting to be a burden for their loved ones and rudely demanding to be left alone with their monsters. It also shows the perseverance that those around who care must have and the need for them to understand that the rudeness is depression speaking, not their loved one.

Ff9 has always been my favorite game. I played it when I was 9. This game and the characters really shaped my vision of friendship. Back then, I did not realize what this scene meant, and that Zidane actually tried to get himself killed just to save his friends and not destroy the world. Dagga’s curaga scene is ultra powerful because it symbolizes the spark of hope Zidane needed at the most crucial moment, when his life was about to end (1Hp). I think it encourages us to never let a friend down, even when everything seems lost, because there is always something that can be done, to let our friends and family know that they are not alone.

@reapordeath2 жыл бұрын
In all fairness Noctis couldn't combine with anyone to beat this masterpiece. Noctis really wasn't a bad protagonist but he wasn't a particularly good one either.
@Deadflower20xx2 жыл бұрын
@@reapordeath I thought he was great, he had a good arc of being someone who required babysitting and wanted to run away from his responsibilities to someone who owned up to everything and could stand on his own as a man. Even Lightning has a good arc, maybe just not as pronounced. If by the end the protagonist recognizes their faults and overcomes them/accepts them, to me that's a satisfying hero.
@reapordeath2 жыл бұрын
@@Deadflower20xx I disagree, I found Noctis to be boring as a character. Not a whole lot changes from chapter 1 to chapter 13. His whole character arc happens while he is asleep anyway. Noctis is less of a character and more of a... 'reaction' I would surmise. He finds out his father is dead? That's pretty powerful character building stuff. But Noctis has one of the most unbelievable reactions I've ever seen from a character. There's denial, which was nice to see, but then he just accepts his father's death and pretty much skips the rest of the grieving process... I mean the biggest change to his character is from the crystal sleep. Literally just skips the biggest and most important piece of his character arc and he just glosses it over. I did recently play the royal edition and it certainly smoothed out some of this, but even still Noctis just reacts to things even though we are in direct control over him. But if you felt it was a satisfying character then you are certainly welcome to it. I shan't say your opinion is objectively wrong, but I most definitely do not share your enthusiasm.

the scenes are nowhere near as impactful if Zidane has trance right of the bat, and if Steiner knows shock and Zidane can absorb damage from quake... The first time I played through this scene when I was 8, I got through by a hair strand. I felt like everyone really saved me 😊

This is gonna turn up in Endwalker... The WoL was in a similar chair in the Launch trailer Edit: Oh boy I was wrong. The chair was for something far worse

In 5th grade I used to hum this to myself at school when I couldn’t play. Of course I didn’t really get the whole existential meltdown thing, I just remember it was cool how he gets sad and his friends don’t let him kill himself. Of course now, “FF9 is my favorite game” (been saying that for a decade now wow) is a cliche, but it’s true. There has been none better since, and the older games upon scrutiny don’t hold up. FF9 ages like the finest wine however, it’s only more relevant and popular every year. I used to fear a remake but I would love one if they could just keep their hands off the story, it’s literally PERFECT. I think we’re better off without a remake though, this scene will hold up forever. Also using Mega Flare to end the last battle was sick, this is a great video!
