One of the really neat things about this scene is how the pairings Zidane encounters (Vivi/Eiko, Amaranth/Freya, Quina/Steiner) are all kind of "odd couples," characters who had nothing to do with each other prior to the journey but are now working together. It adds a lot to the whole theme of companionship in this scene.

It's true. I always appreciated that, outside the context of the adventure, each of these pairs would have been totally alienated by the other. Eiko and Vivi are a good way to set the tone, both of whom would be totally alone without the party.

What makes this scene work for me is how Zidane's friends don't really catch that he's in his darkest hour right away. They stand by his side as a matter of course, and so when they actively try to remind him they have his back, you know it's the truth and not simply sparing his feelings.
@stevenmorton20594 жыл бұрын
Part of the genius of this scene is how the music reflects what is happening. The chords tell you that this song should be slow and sad, but instead the tempo keeps driving it forward. Also, the score starts rather thin, with only a couple of instruments, but has more instruments joining in as it progresses. The instruments represent Zidane's companions, rushing to his side and telling him not to give up. The theme of this whole scene is: "You've done so much for all of us. Now it's our turn. You are not alone."

It shows that loved one in need not wanting to be a burden for their loved ones and rudely demanding to be left alone with their monsters. I love how they have paired up the characters and the interaction between Zidane and each pair. First, Eiko and Vivi, two little kids whom he has fostered, as a foster parent you can say. Zidane's words to them are like that of a father to his kids, calling them little brats. He moves on, Freya and Amaranth, as per nature of those two, don't need any interaction with Zidane from the start. They are assertive on their own, they just jump into the fight and help Zidane out and leave him on his own, knowing it's better for him. Then Quina and Steiner who roll in a defeated manner towards Zidane, not noticing Zidane at all. Even in almost an autistic way they only have one purpose at the time, killing the monster. This is also how Zidane exactly knows Quina and Steiner and decides to help them. His nature to help returns slowly. Then there is Dagger. The princess , but now a queen, almost ordering Zidane to get back to his senses, to feel how he has always been feeling, and be himself again. It's outright so powerful

I have a lot of love for this franchise. 4 tore the limiter off of fantasy storytelling, 5 is what got me into JRPGs in the first place, 6, 7, and 10 are near-flawless masterpieces, and the rest are fantastic in their own rights, but my heart will always belong to 9. Zidane is a masterclass in protagonist writing, and this sequence is the best part of a game wholly made up of "best parts". *Everything* that has happened in the game prior to this was building up to this scene -- Zidane is mercilessly cheerful and his positivity is viral. Everything he's done has been to give his friends the best, happiest experience possible, to pick them up when they're down, and their background, attitude, and lack of receptiveness have never been barriers for him. Zidane sees who people can and want to be, and relentlessly pushes them to grow into that person. In return, in his lowest moment, when the chips are down and he's lost everything he knows about himself, the friends that he's fought tirelessly for prove that kindness *is* to be rewarded, that friendship goes both ways, and that love begets love begets love begets love. I have had my low points, and during all of them the people that I've put effort into have proven to me that they also put effort into me. Zidane, and this scene in particular, are the epitome of that. Simply a fantastic piece of fiction.

Back then, I did not realize what this scene meant, and that Zidane actually tried to get himself killed just to save his friends and not destroy the world. Dagga’s curaga scene is ultra powerful because it symbolizes the spark of hope Zidane needed at the most crucial moment, when his life was about to end (1Hp). I had a save just for the entrance to Memoria... The airship armada arriving to help fight off the dragons was another great scene...

Best Scene in the game. Like zidane, I’ve pushed away the people I’ve cared about most too because I didn’t want to be a burden on them any longer. And did they give up and leave me, even when I thought I was unworthy of them and their love? Never. It speaks to most of us, which is why I think it’s a classic moment in all of the FF games.

The scene just oozes with symbolism with how he rudely pushes people trying to help him away to go fight monsters by himself.

When you get a Dagger trance during this portion of the game. That shit hits different

That should have been a thing. Like at the start when Zidane trances when she's in trouble.

Lightning and noctis combine cant beat this masterpiece
@reapordeath3 жыл бұрын
In all fairness Noctis couldn't combine with anyone to beat this masterpiece. Noctis really wasn't a bad protagonist but he wasn't a particularly good one either.
@Deadflower20xx3 жыл бұрын
@@reapordeath I thought he was great, he had a good arc of being someone who required babysitting and wanted to run away from his responsibilities to someone who owned up to everything and could stand on his own as a man. Even Lightning has a good arc, maybe just not as pronounced. If by the end the protagonist recognizes their faults and overcomes them/accepts them, to me that's a satisfying hero.

@@Deadflower20xx I disagree, I found Noctis to be boring as a character. Not a whole lot changes from chapter 1 to chapter 13. His whole character arc happens while he is asleep anyway. Noctis is less of a character and more of a... 'reaction' I would surmise. He finds out his father is dead? That's pretty powerful character building stuff. But Noctis has one of the most unbelievable reactions I've ever seen from a character. There's denial, which was nice to see, but then he just accepts his father's death and pretty much skips the rest of the grieving process... I mean the biggest change to his character is from the crystal sleep. Literally just skips the biggest and most important piece of his character arc and he just glosses it over. I did recently play the royal edition and it certainly smoothed out some of this, but even still Noctis just reacts to things even though we are in direct control over him. But if you felt it was a satisfying character then you are certainly welcome to it. I shan't say your opinion is objectively wrong, but I most definitely do not share your enthusiasm.

There is just something beautiful about seeing Garnet finish off the last monster by summoning a full-sequence Bahamut.

I’m imagining how darker Zidane’s voice would be when he’s like this before his friends managed to tell him that even if he tries do this alone, they will be there to protect him.

The monsters' cries in this game have always been badass and bone-chilling at times.

In 5th grade I used to hum this to myself at school when I couldn’t play. Of course I didn’t really get the whole existential meltdown thing, I just remember it was cool how he gets sad and his friends don’t let him kill himself. Of course now, “FF9 is my favorite game” (been saying that for a decade now wow) is a cliche, but it’s true. There has been none better since, and the older games upon scrutiny don’t hold up. FF9 ages like the finest wine however, it’s only more relevant and popular every year. I used to fear a remake but I would love one if they could just keep their hands off the story, it’s literally PERFECT. I think we’re better off without a remake though, this scene will hold up forever. Also using Mega Flare to end the last battle was sick, this is a great video!

As I said on a previous video: > But after playing the “finally completed FFXV” (Damn! That game could have been so much better if the time would have been invested properly! DAMN!!) I have to admit that Noctis had also had a considerable amount of development. Especially in the last campfire scene. I never expected him to come out like that.

Greatest moment in all of FF history for me, and made IX my personal fave FF, just above VII. The only scene that carries a similar emotional weight for me is Cloud’s Lifestream sequence. But the music in this just pushes it over the top. Best FF track for me as well.
