For as simple as it is, I've always loved the Theme of Final Fantasy. Uematsu famously stated that he threw it together in like 5 minutes for the scene when asked to make a simple arpeggio, not knowing it would basically represent the franchise as a whole. I had it played earlier this year during my FFXI online wedding after we were announced, nothing could've fit more perfectly. (EDIT) Got my facts crossed here, it was Prelude that he made in less than 10 minutes.

I like it the most because it still has that great 8-to-16 bit atmosphere, but it also throws in the very interesting bonus content. Of course, it does still lack the options that allowed you to make the Origins version closer to the original game. If I ever learn to hack Dawn of Souls, I am going to make an edition that allows a multitude of options for fine tuning the game in regards to elements from the preceding versions, even including an option to turn off the auto-target. I am one of those few people who just really, really likes that old school magic system with the simple spell stocks instead of an MP pool.

Final Fantasy was my first contact with "Nintendo hard". In the journey from the second to third town, I went ahead and skipped grinding, hoping to power through and do it once I have more equipment and spells to choose from. Boy, was I ever wrong. I came across these enemies called Arachnids which were much higher leveled than the other enemies and poison you...when you're far away from town. I had one antidote for the white mage so he could survive and cast Poisona or Esuna or whatever it was called on the rest of the party. He died first. Everyone succumbed to the poison on the trek back except for the fighter, who survived thanks to his high HP and a little help from RNJesus (poisoned only in the final stretch). He managed to drag himself to the temple only to find that the party didn't have enough gp for a single resurrection. He went back, dragging the corpses of his fallen companions all the way, to fight imps and wolves. It was tedious, time consuming, and there was a large level gap that irked me for a while... but hell if I was going to be under-prepared for those 8-legged bastards this time!

Elfland is the biggest difficulty spike in the game, second is ice cave third I'd probably say temple of fiends revisited. My tip is using the classic Kyzoku trick to buy a ton of potions really, you can also use a similar encounter table manip to fight tons of giants in front of the elf town for XP, if you have a black mage, get him LIT2 at level 5, deals more damage o the mages of tge marsh cave thsn FIR2, though not as useful for peninsula of power grinding.

white mage is prob the worst char in the game..with a broken int stat they wont heal more then red mage, their attack power is garbage, and any protection spell becomes useless when you finally get the ribbon item which turns on all protections you ever need..theres a reason why 4x white mage is the hardest run in the game...even 4x black mage has an easier time and 4x red mage crushes the game.. and ya black mage is prob the 2nd worst for not being able to cast white magic and doing less damage then red and having the lowest hp for no real reason... red mage is so broken in the nes original with int being broken and him having amazing equips..both spells up to the lv that matters, can cast exit, revive, and do slightly less damage then a ninja (shows how good he is) and he has the highest hp of the mage class and you got your best mage in the game...hes flat out nerfed in every remake and even then hes still really good...though once the int stat is fixed white/black mage finally become good picks again..

One problem I have always had with RPGs as a whole is the whole is the way most of them do random encounters. Games like EarthBound do it the best, where you can always see the enemies on the overworld and choose to fight or evade them, and if you're at a high enough level, weak enemies run in fear from you. Keeps you from having to fight the same level 5 rats over and over again, and also really makes you feel powerful. But then, there are games where large portions of the journey consist of "How far can I make it before another Sandshrew trips me up?" You know, like caves in Pokemon, with their infinite amounts of meaningless Digletts and Zubats. There was a part in Octopath Traveler in a cave where I felt like I couldn't move five steps without another herd of rats swarming around me. I personally don't understand why most RPGs haven't converted to the EarthBound system, because if I don't WANT to fight another Pidgey, then I don't HAVE to.

So Pokémon specifically had this item called Repel that is super inexpensive and makes it impossible to run into Pokémon of a lower level than your party’s lead for a certain amount of steps. In the original game, this item is first available in Pewter City, right before your first cave dungeon. So Pokémon *had* a way to avoid those battles. Yeah, and it's one of those games (other is FFVI) where a bugged version is fine because there's builds made around figuring out what spells and statuses do not work, and which work too well. Personally, I liked PS1 of all re-releases, it kept old D&D charge-based magic system but updated graphics and sound. IIRC, PSP-onwards versions had mana system until Pixel Remaster.

I've been playing the original Famicom version of 2. It's leagues better than the GBA version Jared played on stream. Dungeon design is still awful, and it's still practically impossible to properly level temporary party members, but most of Jared's other complaints are basically not present. It would actually be a disservice to the game for Jared to review it without playing the original, which we all know is never gonna happen. Not a great game, but I'm enjoying it more than 8 or 12.
@uknownada7 жыл бұрын
Jared did make a joking comment in his "Top 10 Worst Things FF Has Ever Done" that FF2 is one of the worst games in the series, with FF8 and FF13, while using footage of the Famicom version. That picture of Joof at the beginning actually killed me lmao Anyway, I never had the chance to play or even really see anything from FF1 until now, and it's awesome seeing the origin of a game series that largely impacted my life as well, in fact my username was inspired by the Final Fantasy franchise, haha. Also that thing where the sprites get updated is great, I wish more games did that, and let you feel the progress you're making in such a tangible way. You totally nailed everything about game feel in this; there's such subtle touches in the design of everything from combat speed, to building up your characters, and opening up the world for yourself by choosing to do certain tasks instead of following a set path that I can see would make for such a satisfying experience. I wish more modern game makers would re-examine those aspects, because I feel like not many games are able to give you the real sense that you've gone on an adventure anymore, and I think it really comes down to those basics and giving them their proper dues. Anyway thanks for sharing not only this great classic with us but also some of your fond memories and inspirations! ^v^

Commenting here to say I have beaten the PSP port of Final Fantasy 1. Party was a Monk, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage; lots of spells to cover buffs and heals and specialized-damage-spells, and the Monk is very buff-friendly. The game really was a smooth ride for me, as I managed through with minimal grind (only a few passes at the Peninsula Of Power for spell-level access for a total time of 1-2 hours out of the 24 total spent just playing to wherever I felt like going) and eventually more money than I knew what to do with. I did dabble a bit into the bonus content before knocking down the final boss, but still have much of it to do with maybe the same party or a different party. I have no experience exactly with the NES original or the PS1 version that did some fixes to the bugged parts, but I definitely still feel that this is one of the strong entries of the franchise, in consideration that this is the first Final Fantasy.

Hey found a glitch in Final Fantasy 1 for NES years ago.. anytime you take the SHIP into a harbor walk into the town.. go to the INN spend the night.. hold reset and turn power off.. turn the game back on now leave the INN.. leave the village get on your SHIP and after sailing a short distance.. a random encounter will flash the screen. In most roms or original carts of the game for the NES.. the random enemy will ALWAYS be "Kyzokus" (but on some carts it is a shark every time lol)which are similar to the pirates you fought in the town you got the SHIP! they are useful for raising GP in short amounts of time but not much else. Still a neat bug i wanted to share.

Here's a tip to get warmech in the NES version Save in front of the mirage tower. Power off the console and back on, this will reset the encounter table to 0. Climb up the tower, count how many encounters you got, has to bee less than 20. When you get up there, the 20th emcounter will be warmech. Now here's a challeemge for the crazy ones, warmech is the second rarest enemy on the brudge, the rarest formation there is a group of fighters, they'll e the 129th encounter from a power off, have fun hunting them!
