I noticed in 9 out of 10 battles Sephiroth let's his opponents come to him, ge essentially elects to play by their rules then beat them at their own game. Part of me wonders if this duel was making up for the rather simplistic final duel in the original game. It’s incredibly brutal, and shows Sephiroth, in a normal fight, would have painted the Planet with Cloud’s blood in FFVII proper if that final sword duel wasn’t impossible to lose normally.

If I take your meaning, I wouldn’t argue with the statement that that whole movie was just pretense to animate this fight. Not that I necessarily agree, I just wouldn’t counter argue. And I’m fine with that. This duel is worth it, and frankly I don’t think the rest of the movie is nearly as bad as people have made it out to be. Plus, Cloud finally getting some face to face closure with Zack himself after forgetting him at the end of Crisis Core is so satisfying. Cloud may have forgotten Zack for a time, but he never stopped being his living legacy. He remembered to embrace his dreams and protect his honor, and that’s what Zack wanted more than being personally remembered. At least that’s how I see it. Death of the Author IS at play for me.

I always found it funny how people used this as proof that Cloud was way weaker then Sephi. Don't get me wrong Sephi is still stronger by a bit, but I fairly sure the time gap didn't have serious fights, and Cloud's days so far involved tanking a mega flare, killing Bahamut, the highway chase, while he was suffering from geostigma, then after he was cured from it, he was back into it with someone who could go even against him for a bit. Then Sephi showed up. So him losing a bit of ground to Sephi is understandable.

Always loved this fight. And Sephiroth has the upper hand almost the entire battle. I also love how Sephiroth remembers what defeated him previous times. The first time, he was caught off-guard by Cloud's strong will. The second time when it was just him and Cloud, Cloud used Omnislash, which Sephiroth hadn't seen before, therefore didn't know how to defend against it. And now this third time, Cloud uses Omnislash again, only this time Sephiroth was ready for it and countered it. But when Cloud uses a new version of Omnislash, Omnislash Version 5 as Dissidia calls it, Sephiroth is once again taken off-guard, not knowing how to defend against this attack. If you can, absolutely watch Advent Children Complete. It adds new scenes that make the movie flow a bit better and a few tweaks to details. Bahamut showing damage from Cloud smashing its face in, how serious geostigma actually was rather than being a nasty black rash, and of course, this scene with Cloud getting slashed up by Sephiroth.

Its weird how Sephiroth himself is only in maybe 5% of the game physically (anytime we see him, except in the flashback, the crater, and the final boss battle is JENOVA's illusions), and he is very much dead by this point (Jenova's illusion at work again), yet he's still always considered the main villain. Also gotta love how jenova and sephiroth were deemed planet-ending threats in FF7 and here the entire group just goes "nah, cloud got this, we can wait"
