Btw, a lot of classic final fantasy songs have heavy metal covers done by Uematsu's band, The Black Mages. I cannot recommend them enough. They are a big part of my video game grinding playlist.

The crazy part is when you realize that the speed with which you beat the boss determines on how you're playing, but the music still perfectly transitions seamlessly with each transition no matter how you play. Even in the original game for PSX, with it's midi soundtrack, Uematsu still recorded a choir for this song which was quite a surprise to hear during gameplay back then.

Also for context: Advent children is a film sequel to FF7, set two years after the climax. The whole Seprioth fight is perfectly timed to last the entire song. Sephiroth never appeared on-screen, let alone was fought on the part of the original game that Remake overlaps, and the fight with him takes place as the timeline is falling apart.

There's a reason everywhere Uematsu took his band (the black mages), the crowd would go absolutely WILD the moment the first sound of this song started playing. One Winged Angel is a bombastic operatic masterpiece and many would argue Uemetsu's best work, if for no other reason than how perfectly it played its role in the climax of what is also argued to be Square's best work. One of the coolest things about 7 remakes music is the way it is incorporated. They developed in the engine a sort of automated song transition. Especially in some areas, the area theme and battle theme transition so well that you think it's the same song, but its automated stuff.

As far as I understand, all you need for that to work pretty well is the ability to have both tracks playing at once, but with one muted. It's a lot of effort on the sound crew's part to actually provide the music for this, though, so huge props to them.

@@shadowforge25 It was the Unreal Engine, which at the time natively had sound cues but nothing that would innately let them just play three tracks at different tempos and alter the sound levels on the fly based on what the character is doing. What they did was genius, and required programmers, sound engineers and the composer also. Just, awesome. Hopefully they release some basis of it upstream for other developers to take advantage of.

For those who may think that the music is disconnected and/or all over the place: IT'S NOT, it's intentional. The villain (Sepiroth) toys with the main character across the whole game, so the music reflects your battles across the whole game. It's a journey.

Cloud is often only dealing with inner demons (jenova cells etc), while the group chases after shades controlled by thier jenova cells, while sephiroth recuperates in north crator. Jenova was the antagonist mostly. It feels like sephiroth is playing with you because they build it up to look that way.

It is objectively disconnected and all over the place, by design. Every segment but the first and the last were composed out of order. Uematsu would think of a melody, write it down, and carry on with his day, and only assembled them when he had all of them. That’s why the song has so many unique melodies that don’t repeat. I think it’s extremely impressive for such an objectively disconnected song to still flow so well, and for each individual part to be iconic on its own but more so as a whole.

The absolute genius of the FF7 Remake boss themes its that they usually come in three stages of remixes. One following a new structure but teasing us with leitmotifs from the original, one that pushes a little closer to the original to hype old fans up, and one once the final phase of the fight begins thats a full note for note remaster of the original track. It builds hype incredibly well for old fans while also surprising us with new stuff and I absolutely love it.

Oh man he has reacted to one of gaming history's most infamous music. The song is so iconic that when the first note of One winged Angel played in the Smash trailer, it sent the entire internet screaming. There are also tons of other versions of this song each with a different composition and tells a bit of a different story. Crisis Core's version (The World's Enemy) is heavily percussion and brass based, which makes sense since it is a prequel, the song is somewhat incomplete like the character. There are also the original MIDI version from FFVII, which spawn tons of orchestral covers. Sephiroth also appeared in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 as a secret boss with two different remixes. Those songs are given an orchestral remix in Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5. The songs in that game is shorter but gives a heavy "oh no" vibes as you are facing one of the hardest bosses in the games. This song is just one of the most iconic in gaming history. The AC version is the composers vision combining metal, rock and orchestral music. He even formed his own band, The Black Mages, which does metal and rock remixes of final fantasy music. AC also tells the story of Sephiroth's evolution even after the original FFVII. The longest one you heard, Re:Birth combines several motifs together. The fight is spilt into four pieces. With the song initally sounding incomplete and building as Sephiroth decides to use like 10% of his power. As the fight ends it becomes frantic as the fight isn't just about winning it is about survival. The events of this fight was not in the original FFVII suggesting that something is off. It is amazing how the same song can be remixed to tell different stories, yet keep its epicness.

And yes, this follows closely behind that last one you did from the remake, where they were driving down the road fighting giant robots lol The way this game moves from cinematic experiences directly into gameplay and back again, all with music of THIS caliber playing, makes the experience absolutely phenomenal. It's a constant adrenaline rush at the end, for like 15-20 mins of just engaged adrenaline! Believe it or not this was a remake of a turn based game, so the fact that can inject this much pure action into it while retaining a very similar feeling is crazy to me. But yes, you really should play it, it's only like a third of the overall story and the second part is likely years away still, but I have not felt as satisfied after the end of a game as I did with this one, maybe the ending of Shadowbringers from FFXIV, but the fact that the comparison is like "pure gold or pure gold" already says a lot lol Loved your reaction to these, was so fucking excited when I saw this pop up on my feed, would love to see a cover xD

To give some credit: OWA was of course composed by Nobuo Uematsu, who also supervised and composed for the Advent Children soundtrack. For the AC version, the orchestrations were done by Kazuhiko Toyama and Shiro Hamaguchi and the band arrangements by Kenichiro Fukui who also played keyboards in The Black Mages with Uematsu. The Remake version was done by Yasunori Nishiki who's also the main composer of Octopath Traveler.

If not playing them, sitting down to watch a gameplay movie (not just the cutscenes) will get you all the music, the story, the context without the extra confusion if u arent used to games like this. These are usually long games, though so these movies might be around 7 hours or so~ Although some folks might say XV and XIII trilogy are annoying or missing things in terms of gameplay or story gaps, I think they're really great candidates for gameplay movies

You'd love Alex Makoula's video analysis on this where he talks about how One Winged Angel was composed out of order and was built in a way where it was meant to be taken apart and reconstructed as needed. Nobuo Uematsu was heavily Influenced by Prog Rock during this period where he composed it. But it is VERY easy to re-arrange it depending on the needs of the situation. Another Recommendation on channels to check out: Phil Heartshorn, A Film Maker Reacts. He breaks down the cinematic language used in this fight, and several other major scenes. Also... Another FF music suggestion if you loved this... All 4 Movements of Dancing Mad from FF6. FF14 does all 4 movements during the Omega Raids. Up to you if you want the 16 bit or modern version of Dancing Mad.

It will make you want to play the original game + it will give you some context that maybe the original game with its old graphic and turnbased graphics may not when starting to play.

I'd recommend him to play NieR automata first...but from an enjoyment perspective that's not a good idea. I recommend it first because it's the better of the 2 games for sure, but that's also kinda why you shouldn't start with it. Depends on if you wanna start at the peak or build up to it I guess.

When people talk about the greatest villain track in Final Fantasy history, either One Winged Angel or Dancing Mad from FFVI are the ones that are almost always number one. But Dancing Mad has movements, whereas One Winged Angel is just one piece. Hopefully you can do Dancing Mad at some point, though that will be trickier since some videos break it down into its movements and don't play the full song. And yes, the original version is just as wild, though limited by PlayStation 1's technical limitations and the unfamiliarity with the system (7 was supposed to be on the N64 but SE moved production to the stronger PS1 midway through production). Highly recommended.

Just an fyi, the n64 is the more powerful system. What the PSX had going for it was two things. One is discs, which had much greater storage capacity and were cheaper to produce (so less licensing fees) and two, the system was easier system to develop games on. But there’s a lot of work physics and such that the n64 could do that the ps1 simply couldn’t, it was just that it was hard to extract that from the system if you weren’t, well, Nintendo (or a company that was closely associated with Nintendo, such as Rare). This was also even more true of the Sega Saturn, it was technically more powerful than the PS1 but the architecture was so disjointed that it was very difficult to develop games for it, which ended up effectively making the PS1 better overall than t the Saturn. The fifth generation was wild.

The remake version, believe it or not, is even crazier in the game because of the way it changes and transitions dynamically over the course of the fight. It's insane.

I remember the first time fighting Sephiroth is his final form ( yeah yeah, they don't show that just yet. That was in original game lol) I had...72 hrs in. My cousin decided he wanted to play and saved over...over my gameplay...Love my cousin. O.o And that beautiful lady you see there is Shiva. She is as much a staple of the FF series as Ifrit is so you can see them throughout. Sorry for going on like this. Just having so much fun watching your reaction. Love your reactions.

Personally my favorite rendition of this song is the Reunion version of it that they used in Dissidia final fantasy. That one is orchestral only but in my opinion is the best sounding, best orchestrated and has the best choir out of all the versions. Honestly while the AC version is good Its on the lower end of the versions of this song in my humble opinion. Would love it if you reacted to the reunion version someday.

I hope highlights/reactions to the game on Twitch stream come to KZbin, it's always fun seeing people react to the beauty of this title. I'd love to see you reacting to the music in the context of the surroundings and such. The music also has a few "spoilers" here and there sprinkled throughout, which some have already pointed out in the JENOVA theme, but there are a few little hidden gems and foreshadows in other tracks as well, and picking up on those while playing the Remake sent chills down my spine. Nostalgia, and foreboding. Tadayoshi et al have an extremely good grasp on how to pull new people in with the sheer scale of the music, and how to pluck and twist the heartstrings of returning fans. I really can't wait to see how they continue or excel beyond this soundtrack in the future installments.

Just found you for the first time now, very happy to see you reacting to One Winged Angel. Probably my absolute favorite peace of music that exists! For sure in my top 3 at the minimum! I first heard OWA (a version of it) in Kingdom Hearts 1. Sephiroth is a secret Boss fight. The most difficult in the game. So, as a 7 year old kid in 2002, this level of difficulty combined with the amazing song, and the superb feeling of accomplishment(a high I’ve been chasing ever since) definitely influenced all future comparisons of difficulty and musical comparisons I come across in life. I always compare a Villain’s vibe and badassery WITH Sephiroth lol A really difficult boss fight: “Ahh, so this is the Sephiroth of this Game.” And really badass villain in a movie or show: “ahh, so this is the Sephiroth of this movie.” Glad you listened to it man! ^__^ You got my subscribe.

I know this is 2 years old but I loved your reaction to this. All forms of this song are amazing, even the version from the ps1 game. I had that song on every mp3 player, ipod, or phone I've ever had since I was a kid and some people used to laugh at me having this crazy song and trying to play it at party's. It was rare when I got someome on board, so it brings me great joy to see the game get a revamp and the soundtrack for the game (in all of their renditions) get the attention it deserved in 1997.

One-Winged Angel Advent is one of my favorite songs on this planet. I've been listening to it since this movie came out and I literally never get tired of it. The original song was so damn good and then the film introduces THIS and just makes it better, specifically by adding in the rock and metal elements that were absent from the OG version. And then Remake comes along with Rebirth and finds new and exciting ways to blow me away. This song is continually a part of my life and I love it so much. The interesting lore of One-Winged Angel is that it was initially composed by Nobuo Uematsu struggling greatly to make the song sound as he wanted it to. He ultimately started writing extremely short moments, and then rearranged them in different orders until the song started to come together. For Advent Children he added in metal (from his former rock band, The Black Mages). For Rebirth, new arrangers very clearly took aspects of the original composition and added in new elements. The result is a chaotic, turbulent, and explosive piece.
