This track is a remix made for the FFVII movie, all the rock stuff with the guitars and drums..etc is not in the original. It's made to fit the scene that it plays in, with all the action and dialogue involved. I encourage you to listen to the original one winged angel, you won't regret it .

I'm a huge nerd when it comes to music in games and game-related media so hearing someone completely shredding a guitar as Cloud and Sephiroth battle it out on the falling pieces of rubble from a skyscraper? Yeah, I feel like it's pretty fitting.

It’s interesting that you mentioned Stravinsky right away, because the composer of this track, Nobuo Uematsu, mentioned that Stravinsky was a huge inspiration for him when he wrote the original. What’s also interesting is the way he composed the track. He came up with a lot of unique, short melodies and later put them together, almost like a puzzle. Needless to say, you should definetly check out the original version from Final Fantasy 7 and the version from the FF7 Remake called “One Winged Angel-Rebirth”.

Nobuo stated that when writing this song, he would write two to four scores a day until he had about thirty, and after deciding on the first two to start the song, rearranged the remaining until they fit together in a jigsaw kind of way. Which leads to the song having that sporadic feeling of uneasiness.

The thing about videogame music that makes it so incredibly good. Is that is usually made to increase the immersion of whatever scene or battle is going on. This is from the last fight with Sephiroth in the movie Advent Children. Every section in the soundtrack matches the pace and intensity of said fight. In this case I feel like the true experience of this soundtrack is felt while you watch said scenes.

That little part at 10:35 is from the orchestral version of One Winged Angel, which I'd argue is the more memorable descendant of the original game track. The heavy rock sound of the version you're listening to was composed for the "Advent Children" movie, and while it brings ideas from the orchestrated version along, the heavy rock stuff strongly dominates. It's meant to accompany a climactic scene in the movie, so I get the idea, but it's also very, very busy. The orchestral version though? Wonderful. This was such a cool piece when it came out because it was tied to a movie "sequel" many years after the game was released. It was one winged angel in a way we never heard, with cool flashy fights with unrealistically big swords and all that. This version was kind of like a fan service-ish arrangement. However, there is an actual orchestral version of this piece and it's definitely worth checking out. This is an incredibly iconic song among gamers.

Nobuo Uematsu composed many of my favorite videogame tracks and music in general. He's very strong at writing simple, catchy melodies and spreading leitmotifs across the whole soundtrack. It's a unique experience to see a self-taught musician start with NES chiptunes and adapt their music with each generation of technology all the way through to live progressive metal and symphonic arrangements.

I'm glad you were able to listen to this and break it down! This was one of the first ever video game songs I learned on piano and posted on KZbin (different account, although I think I reposted it on here as a #tbt) when I was just a high school sophomore in '05. Honestly, I remember for most of the 2000's that this song sat up there as one of the most recognizable video game songs outside of the Mario/Zelda themes. Everyone knew OWA. Everyone loved OWA. Everyone talked about OWA. It's been... a long time since we had a song as well-known and liked as that (arguably Megalovania, although it seems the general internet more likes it for memes than actual compositional brilliance). I know it was mentioned that the lead guitar and cymbals ride over the mix, but that might've been slight overcompensation when this was first made. I remember the original orchestral version (not the one from the actual FFVII, but an orchestral version later on) was basically this exact version minus the rock instruments and that rock-esque interlude in the middle. When the sequel movie (FFVII: Advent Children) came out in... I believe it was 2006, it was just the same exact orchestral part with the rock instruments added on top. It's possible that to accentuate this change, they might've gone slightly overboard when it come to the mixing to make the new instruments stand out over the original song. Your Mileage May Vary, but I actually prefer the original version without the shredding guitars and loud drumset. You can really hear the interplay and counterpoint in the orchestra that got drowned out in this version and the intricate harmonies/voicings in the winds/strings, plus the timpani and snare in the original really do well to both accent rhythms and provide some harmonic context. (Timpani gets used like a percussive bassline with the double bass, similar to using a piano to double the bass guitar in jazz, to really punch out the chords. Uematsu's genius writing of the original sadly does get overshadowed by the wailing, face-melting guitar, which some do prefer but isn't quite my cup of tea.) But, man... no matter how critical I am of this (or the original version) or how many other VG songs I eventually turn to and love (and are arguably superior from a technical standpoint), this one will always hold a place for me as a piece of my childhood. It will... never be a memory.

The original One Winged Angel piece from the game Final Fantasy VII was arranged as a fully orchestral piece. It didn't have the rock guitar and drums. This version is a remix from the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which is a sequel to the game. One Winged Angel has been remixed more than once, as it and the game are the most popular in the Final Fantasy series, so Square Enix have always taken the opportunity to revisit it.

There are so many versions of this piece now lol. If you were more into the orchestral side, it might be worth listening to an orchestral version of it… The original one used the PS1 sound chip or MIDI of some sort, but there are full orchestral versions from various games that reused the track, or simply from live concerts. There are other great versions from other Final Fantasy 7 games too.

In a lot of games certain sections will repeat to a point and then in a new boss phase a new movement will play. It might not make a lot of sense as a standalone to have so much happen in one song, but it's what it represents.

I always love One Winged Angel. The original piece comes from boss BGM in FFVII, before being remixed for Advent Children movie, which is this one. They don't do much modification (maybe none?) when they added it to Smash Bros., probably because it's already perfect to begin with.

Just to reiterate a what people have said here, the black mages version, which was this one, is great when put in context with the movie Advent Children. That middle section where the guitar solo and the riffs are at add to sephiroth talking smack to cloud etc etc. The original version which is just the orchestra and choir, that's some next level stuff 👌

The part that you said the song was building anticipation and the part where you said you were the most impressed, those two segments actually were composed together in the original song, One Winged Angel. The heavy metal was incorporated into this song as the style of the movie was a bit edgy and the original characters were always kind of edgy anyways. But I always loved how the orchestra was building so much suspense, then a lone flute breaks that suspension with a little melodic line. I prefer the OG, but I appreciate this version too, for what it’s worth.

I was normally going to leave a negative remark but I had found myself lacking in giving an actual critique that didn't sound like was just throwing personal opinion at you. So, the original piece was made for the old video game called Final Fantasy 7, the song is called the same, One Winged Angel, the creator for this one is called Nobuo Uematsu. This was the version for the movie called Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, as someone pointed out already (in the comment section). Nobuo Uematsu also had a hand in this version, but rather than making the piece for a game, he had to write it for a movie. A remake of the Final Fantasy 7 was made a few years ago. The version we got from the remake is called One Winged Angel: Rebirth. Nobuo Uematsu, the original creator at least had a good hand in remaking this masterpiece, which he had made a few of according to me at least, that he has made. As others have said, the composer is the master Nobuo Uematsu. He is regarded as one of the best composers of the Final Fantasy franchise and not only that, but gaming in general. Even tho I'm not sure if Final Fantasy VII was the 1st one who did it, it definitely has the most memorable boss fight music WITH LYRICS. I think no other videogame had clear lyrics before. To put into context: you have (kind of) fought with Sephirot during the entire game, so the final boss you have to go trough 2 phases and when you think it's done, the screen goes entire to black then, suddendly, One Winged Angel (not this version, the OG version) starts to sound, screen goes to bright white and Sephirot appear in his safer form, straight to heaven to earth. It's really something the 1st time you experience that battle and how difficult it can be/over the top. There's another piece that I like even more than One Winged Angel and it's Dancing Mad. It last 16 minutes of barroco/classical type of music and, as Jeremy Jahns said about that piece in particular "For a musician, the SNES sound engine is like an artist using Crayola crayons. Nobuo Uematsu used Crayola crayons to paint the Sistine Chaps"

Dancing Mad is truly a master piece. No surprise he proceeded to make the epic One Winged Angel. Any other master pieces you think even come close to rivaling those 2 pieces?

@@rafael502 I rarelly hate a game but FF13 brings out the worst parts of myself. Having said that, 13 has one of the best OST of the entire franchise. Maybe there isn't a particular piece that rivals both OWA/DM but personally, Saber's Edge is fucking amazing and it's done in such a good way cuz you feel the urgency from the music alone. I love the new song from 7R, Hollow. It's not as epic as those BUT I love power balads and the lyrics is clearly about what Cloud feels about Aerith. Also, Nobuo wrote it :D From other games, from MGS it has to be The best is Yet to come. Such an out of place song when you hear it... until you finish the game and it clicks!

Very telling that what you liked less is the stuff they added to the original one winged angel from ffvii. Look for the version in Nobuo Uematsu's channel (he's the composer), the distant worlds one is pretty good. This one is ok and fits advent children, but I like the orchestral better. Or for a metal version, the one the black mages did (now that I think about it, I think it's the same you heard, but I don't remember it sounding so busy. Nostalgia, maybe?)
