This is actually how I typically flirted with girls when I was about 13 years old - I would stand some distance away and then make eye contact with them long enough to give them a hint, then smile a little bit at them, and then just walk away and let them take the next step. It actually worked quite well some of the time, they could even walk up to me with several of their friends sometimes, which was pretty awesome. I am 33 years old today and don't really get the same school party opportunities to do similar things, and I almost never visit any night clubs. I should probably do that.

Even with the crusty quality, I'm still impressed by the fact that their eyes are so expressive in a late '90s game. They squint and everything, the warmth in Rinoa's eyes is astonishing. Squall's facial movements are also terrific. The mocap is also pretty amazing, when the camera pans to above them as Squall walks away, it moves very realistically.

this scene is so brilliant. it doesn't even need any voiceover. it shows how much rinoa cares for squall and how he eventually let himself go for her. someone like squall being anti-social (I can relate to that especially when I was a teen) and for rinoa to take him out of his anti-social ways truly makes this scene so wonderful :). and the scene sets being romantic due to dancing and peaceful music playing and in the end fireworks. ff8 is one of my favorite games of all-time out of the many games, i felt i could relate to squall the most which makes games all the more fun to me :). thanks for the upload looks like im gonna have to do another playthrough XD!

The more I reread lines and watch videos of it, the more I'm sure that through the whole game Squall had the biggest crush on Rinoa, starting with this scene. Even when he was upset with her, even when he didn't understand why she was upset with him, he always told her to just stay close to him. Because he didn't want to lose her again, like he thought he did at the end of this scene.

Yeah, he really likes her, but Squall isn't really knowledgeable with emotions, so he's confused for the most part. Let's remember one of his closest bonds was Quistis (his Teacher), and his freaking Nemesis was either his 1st or close 2nd. Squall really free-fall jumped into a whole of adventures in the physical and emotional plane. Dude got so emotionally wrecked he started having revelations about the past lol.

Squall explains the scene twice I believe. Once to Quistis, and again when talking to Rinoa about how he learned to dance in case he needed to approach a mission target at a dance party. Squall just wanted her to leave him alone at first so he pretended to be bad at dancing. Don't just press x repeatedly on the text boxes, you'll miss valuable information...

This scene was really important to the game. It introduces what will blossom into the epic romance that is Squall and Rinoa's relationship, and also very subtly shows off layers of character. Squall doesn't know how to dance and Rinoa wants to have fun. It shows the stoic, tough-acting gunblade-slinging Squall as a bit vulnerable and awkward, and also makes the two more believable teenagers. There is also character shown through body language, like Rinoa making that face. Great scene.

Ahh, this is one cutscene that always cheers me up when I'm feeling fairly bad (Especially right now, since I'm feeling pretty sick). I've always been a sucker for sweet dance scenes since I watched Beauty and the Beast in my distant childhood (...come to think of it...some aspects of this game are very similar to that movie...or maybe that's just me). Really love this adorable scene. Why Squarenix never make such a scene again in Final Fantasy's history? Do they have lost their sense of romance? This scene is wonderful if turned into a movie like Advent Children. I have a desire to do this waltz dance with my (still unknown) future wife inside the house, near the dining table with a candle light and of course the waltz theme song. Just two of us, share the moment... :)

Oh it's not sudden. You can see throughout the game how he gets softer and softer towards Rinoa, mainly after saving her at the Deling City parade and at the battle of the Gardens. He's just unsure how to act, and what tips him over the edge is the fact she falls into a coma and he realizes just how much being around Rinoa meant to him.

I just realised something and I HAD to comment on this. Squall watches the fireworks at the end of the dance for a bit and he looks a bit happy even. He's feeling the nostalgia about his childhood at the orphanage. In disc 2 of the game, at Trabia Garden, the main characters reminisce about it - as kids, they had stayed up late at night and went down to the beach to play with fireworks (with Zell threatening to tell Matron on them). It's been more than 10 years and I still find gold like this.

This particular "FF" felt like a fairy tale, especially in this scene. It's beautiful. Squall is very different from the other "FF" protagonists, even Cloud. Like you said, obscure, and actually cold. It may have began as a protection mechanism, but it became what he really was through out the years. And I don't think he ever quite copes with the world, not truly. Because he's actually satisfied with what he experienced so far. He kinda reminds me of Shinji from "Evangelion".
