Ultimecia was in my opinon the most heartless final boss in final fantasy. She wanted to compress time, and in doing that destroy time itself. Every friendship formed, every couple falling in love, all laughter all tears. Every birth every death as if they never existed.

It's a shame FFVIII was too easy to break. Potentially epic scenes like this are forgotten because Lionheart spam kills anything.

if you are into Modding, you should give a try to FF8 Ragnarok Mod, i've played it, it sure does make the game a lot harder, but not a kaizo unfair level of hard, but a challenging experience that makes you use a lot of stuff that you usually don't, buffs a lot the weakest characters (like Selphie and Quistis) give all characters diverging statlines(Zell has way more STR than he had before), no longer punishes you for leveling up, and has removed most if not all of the earlygame cheese that made the game too easy. i am on disk 3, and it feels amazing to have challenging battles in FF8, having to actually strategise, use magic, and not just cheese every battle including bosses by leaving my party at yellow health. you can mod the Steam 2013 port, or the Remastered, i recommend the 2013 port because the mod was made with that version and its completed there.

As much as this may be true, Lionheart doesn’t activate often enough to count this point. It’s strong, but it doesn’t break this fight. Griever, and Ultimecia still use their strongest attacks and still can 1 shot if you aren’t careful. Ultimecia even stops the fight to chat, so in theory she could sit there and take 4 Lionhearts to the face, before the fight is done.

I've always wondered what's the deal with the games placing the leader of the party in the middle of the formation by default even in FFVIII it's really annoying when you prefer the leader of the group to be in the front of the formation
