As a permanent Windurstian, I want to thank you for doing this song. This song is in my top three songs of the entire series because of what it personally means to me. My dad passed away years ago and 11 was a bonding game between us. Whenever I hear this, it helps me remember him and how many fond memories we had playing this together. That bittersweet feeling you mentioned is very much front and center lol

This song holds a special place, for me. On my last day in game I made a trip to Heaven’s Tower with my small group of friends. A final pilgrimage, if you will. This song always felt like the intersection of the natural and the divine, like staring off into the sky and being aware of how small you are. How everything is fleeting. And how all we can do is appreciate this, our moment in time for all the pain and wonder that brings. And, like the steady rhythm that began before the music played, the flow of time and life continues on, even when we’re not.

The thing about FFXI's music versus all the other games is how, for the lack of a better term, 'environmental' most of the music is. Not too terribly much in the way of super battle or intense music (though it is there, and it's badass), but that each song is trying to tell the story of a particular place you're in. I love that you immediately picked up on the nature/sadness of this theme, as the story of Windurst and Heaven's Tower is all about loss, bitter compromise, and trying to persevere in the face of total annihilation that seems inevitable. It's a beautifully somber track.

I love XI's battle themes, Naoshi is all about high tempo and lots of Brass

Huh, I never really thought about it, but off the top of my head I can't remember what any battle themes in FF11 sound like. I mean it has been over a decade though.

❤❤❤ more XI - literally my favorite game of all time. I've never been a big fan of Windurst, but I absolutely love this theme and area. So, at the heart of Windurst is this MASSIVE tree, and Heaven's Tower is built inside of it. It's the seat of their government, where the Star Sybil (their leader - think Holy Emperor of Japan) resides and consults the stars for guidance. There's also a garden at the very base of it where they do agricultural experiments, and IIRC a hidden entrance to the Horutoto Ruins (a dead Zilart city) The Great Star Tree (forget it's official name) is also featured prominently on their flag. * Small EDIT: A lot of the Chrono Trigger devs worked on XI, up until Chains of Promathia (the 2nd expansion) after which they left to form Monolith Soft.

I think the Star Sybil is more Dhali Lama. It's been so long, but doesn't she have a rebirth type succession? Not like the Galka did but like... She dies and then a child is born and chosen as the next one?

@@Varizen87 No, Windurst is based on Japan. They had a bunch of warring tribes that all became united under a leader who was labelled as sacred/divine and then went on an absolute tear across the continents, only being stopped by another major power (I believe it was San d'Oria that put them down at last, they made it all the way to Quon) There's probably other references mixed in, but the main analogue is to Japan's warlords uniting with the Holy Emperor and the blitz they made into the rest of Asia during WW2. San d'Oria is based off France & Spain, and Bastok takes its influence from Colonial America (good and bad - the slavery angle with the Galka is a huge part of their story missions)

This song is like a perfect example of most of FFXI music. They often are long loops that keep adding layers until the song hits its peak. Such a wonderful soundtrack

@@Frionelz XI and XIV went different ways in terms of music. Just like how the games are, XI is more like national parks while XIV is more like theme parks, the music goes accordingly as well.

Picture a giant tower surrounded by a large pool of water with a giant tree on top of it. This is Heavens Tower. It's the seat of power for the Federation of Windurst. The city is made up of the races of the diminutive Tarutaru and the cat like race of the Mithra. It's a city that focuses a lot on magic and nature.

Aronde 4:24 with the guitar and à little bit later with the cello you can hear a very short theme. This is Windurst Thème, the city in which the Heavens Tower resides. Love those small additions

Heaven's tower is easily among my top favorite tracks to listen. It's so serene and at the same time has something sad/dreary to it. I often listen to it on days where I need to calm down and relax. I just love the slow buildup of adding one instrument after the other and then fading back into lesser instruments

I haven't heard this song since 2008, and it is definitely taking me back to a different time in my life. Windurst was one of the most visibly beautiful starting cities of FFXI, and Heaven's Tower was a gigantic hollow tree in the center that essentially served as a city office.

I mentioned this on the Ru'hmet video, but my KZbin handle comes from my FF11 character's name. While I started in Bastok, the nation of Windhurst always held a special place in my heart. This location is the main government building of Windhurst where the Star Sybil and the highest ranking members of the government lived. It's also above the Full Moon Fountain where the Terrestial Avatar of The Moon, Fenrir, resides. Sadly, Jesse, if you don't have time for 14, you DEFINITELY don't have time for 11. I miss having the time I used to have for 11. Hearing all this FF11 music just takes me back to a magical time in my life. There is a certain kind of sadness here. In 11, all the races have a major flaw. The Humes (Humans) are apathetic, The Galka (bear men) are subject to rage, the Elvaan (Elves) are arrogant, the Mithra (cat girls) are envious, and the Tarutaru (child like race) are subject to cowardice. Windurst is populated primarily by Tarutaru and Mithra. Every nation in 11 is suffering the consequences of the Crystal War during the Shadowreign era 20 years before the game starts. Some of the more mournful nature of how the lands around Windhurst are withering and the Tarutaru are too scared of the Yagudo (bird men) to oppose them and just try to appease them to not start another war. While the Star Sybil and the higher ups have you investigate why the land is dying... they actually know full well why already. During the Crystal War, Karuha-Baruha (a high ranking scholar) proposed making use of the forbidden art of Summoning Magic. However, his proposal was rejected, and when everything was at its worst, he acted without authorization and took matters into his own hands. He made a pact with Fenrir. He made use of Summoning Magic, however he didn't use it the Safe way that you as a player use it. When you make a pact with one of the gods, you call forth an Avatar, just a fraction of their power. However, Karuha-Baruha summoned Fenrir Prime, and true form of Fenrir. And instead of fueling the summoning with magical power, he tied Fenrir to his own life. While Fenrir was able to drive off the invading enemy forces, Karuha-Baruha was fatally injured, and Fenrir lost control and went rogue. Though Fenrir was subdued, Fenrir was dying, and began to syphon power from the land to sustain himself. The modern day people are trying to figure out a way to reverse the damage to the land and potentially save Fenrir. If you play Summoner, you can obtain the power to Summon Fenrir, but Fenrir's weakened state is still an issue within the story. Fenrir is functionally stabilized by using Whispers of the 6 Elemental Sleeping Gods (AKA the Avatars you summon) which saves Fenrir's life, but the magic drained from the land by what Karuha-Baruha did remains an issue.

Such an ethereal sound. Chrono Trigger, right on the money as always Jesse. Not only are you being exposed to more music, but you're exposing your audience to more music too. So good, thank you Jesse

Basically, Heaven's Tower is the residence of the spiritual leader of Windurst, the Star Sibyl. Windurst is basically a society of scholars and mages, with the Star Sibyl reading the stars to predict the future. There is a bit of the Windurst leitmotif in this theme (the main Windurst theme is a bit more cheery than this) while this one is more quiet like being in a library or otherwise sacred place.

As a fan of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross (especially the OSTs) when I first got to the area this plays in, I was literally frozen and just vibed out to it. It reminds me a lot of Schala's Theme from CT.

So this is a massive tree that's essentially a tower in the center of a city called Windurst, which is home to a creature called Tarutaru (similar to halfings and hobbits) and Mithra (basically catgirls). Its a very natural environment, with the most technical machines being like water wheels. This tree is probably similar to yggdrasil from Norse mythology, and is revered as such. Only those who hail from this nation who move up in the ranks of adventurers gain the pleasure to be welcomed into its hallowed halls. There is a bit of a sad undertone, and its due to a religious figure that resides there. They are considered a reincarnation of a Goddess called Altana, and when they die their spirit supposedly finds a new host which they seek out to worship again. Despite the natural tone to the city and the tree, there's a crap load of magic around it lol.

This "entering into a void" feeling you say, its very meditative. Repetitive and compeling calming sounds, to soothe and concentrate the mind, to make you self conscious and search meaning inside you. This relates to magic and spirit and life/death and nature, like the people in this city are more linked to magic and spirit than others, as all the people that played the games keep saying in the comments :) i find that this theme is very coherent (never played the game but I really wanted to someday, just to experience it a little)

This song will probably trigger some recent trauma for a small subset of a subset of the XI community. The devs of a FFXI private server recently release a cryptic scavenger hunt that started in Heavens Tower. The vast majority of the game is spent traversing and exploring a massive world, so most of the music you hear is zone music. There are battle themes, but for the most part it's just the same battle theme repeated each battle. There are different ones depending on which expansion your current zone was from and if you're in a party with other players, but there's a fraction as many as XIV.
