As my profile image proves, I can't remotely begin to convey how much this song means to me. I spent countless hours in Gustaberg. Countless. It was peaceful, calming, and wonderful. FFXI shaped my life in 2004-2005. Just hearing this fills me with nostalgia not just for the game, but for that time in my life, and I get a little choked up.

It’s fall 2003, PC US release with Zilart just dropped, and a lonely Galka enters the industrial Republic of Bastok. After much traversing the city to find entry level quests, he sets out to South Gustaburg ready to destroy worms and bees and bats, the calming music playing as he heals between fights. This was my Day 1 experience, and I never have felt home in Sandy or Windy since that first day.

Fellow Bastoker checking in! I started there because my roommates did, but I ended up loving it. It has a lot of issues, but I think I love it because the unlike the other nations, the issues were immediately obvious and relatable, unlike the others where you need to dig deeper to see the issues. I actually didn't enjoy the Gustaberg theme in game, but I've learned to love it outside of game and appreciate the more chill nature. My name was Tarundi because I was a Taru Taru, which then transitioned to Lalafell in FF14 with the same appearance, as Tarundi Von'bismarck because I was from the Bismarck server in FF11. And Ul'dah feels in the same spirit as Bastok so that's what I was drawn to.

Gustaberg is one of the three starting zones in the game along with Ronfaure and Sarutabaruta and all three of them have excellent music, my personal favourite being Ronfaure I remember camping a rare spawn named Leaping Lizzy in Gustaberg for a really long time for some boots and this song played constantly in the background

Played XI with my older brother from 6th grade to college. Made online friends who became lifelong friends and experiences I would never forget. I enjoy subbing once and awhile and stepping back in but nothing will capture the time and enjoyment I was able to put into it back in the day. I always love listening to the music.

The wind rises over the rocky cliffs jutting from the sea, the land barren and unforgiving. Above these cliffs rise even more hills and spires, jagged and grey against the blue sky. Life is sparse among the crags and crevasses of the Gustaberg region but stubbornly fights to make by. Lizards range near the fumaroles, birds and bees find refuge amongst the crags, and crabs can be found along the sea-breaking cliffs. And there, nestled in the heart of the region, lies the nation of Bastok; a young nation struggling fiercely for survival in the harsh terrain. Through it's access to the sea's bounty prodigious mineral reserves the people managed to not only survive but thrive in this all-but-forsaken land. This is what this song means to me. I played FFXI for over 4000 hours of my life over the course of 20 years. I made my first online friend in this zone. I got my first rare NM drop in this zone. I farmed beehive chips, I leveled jobs, I killed 100 bees with a ridiculously slow sword for Dark Knight in this zone. I unlocked a Relic Weapon in this zone. And in all of those hours spent in this zone STILL this music makes me smile and close my eyes and remember those days experiencing a new and exciting world. This song, more than any other is that Final Ftasy XI IS to me.

-Wall of Text warning!- FF11 ...as a player who started playing during 2006 - 2010 and played 8hrs - 12 hrs almost everyday.... the game was a beast and way more addicting than FF14 by a huge margin back in the day. The world of FF11 felt like an actual adventure like out of the cities....the maps of each zone was massive, no easy teleports, you needed to walk everywhere or take airship or ship which you had to wait if you missed the depart and if you didn't then you had to wait for it to arrive which airship was like 7 mins or ships 12 mins or so of travel which was still faster than running or Chocobo. The open world was dangerous......even stuff lower level than you could kill you unless you were in a job that could decently solo so you avoided monsters by putting Sneak and Invisible buffs even then some areas some NM (similar to bosses) even some specific regular monsters could see/hear through those buffs anyway. You could Level down on dead if you didn't had enough experience on the current level (unless you get Raise 1 or 2 or 3 to avoid chunk exp loss). You needed help from people for almost 90% of the game, there was no in-game guide either so you were force to use wiki like sites to know what to do. Jobs? probably the best of the FF series to this day for how loyal it is or even surpass some of their past iterations. again...the game was insanely punishing if not prepare or lack of research when you venture out of the city to any dangerous area. I had a blast, made tons of friends, learning how to deal with monsters, the area always made me curious to explore, see, solve any puzzle needed to pass through and learn how to navigate them. I do play FF14 since beta, do hard content, love the story, and all that but still hasn't come close to my experience in FF11, it was a very different era of MMORPG that will not work in current generation....after all..... FF11 came out when people used Dial up and DSL (5kbs - 50kbs speeds), KZbin was still infant to the point of watching full series divided in 3 parts per episodes, Facebook didn't exist yet, MySpace was starting, tons of chat messengers (MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo, AoL, Skype, many more), Netflix I think was DVD based renting still or was changing to the current format, Limewire/Torrent/etc to find music/episodes still....all I can say that entertainment online was still limited so was more "acceptable" for the game to be massive grinding, insane time consuming and punishing.

Also started in Bastok in FFXI, both myself and the wife. :D Nice to see some FFXI come up. The game did play on PS2, so not shocking that it'd sound like it'd sound like something you'd hear on older consoles. It reminds me a bit of songs in Super Castlevania IV from the SNES.

FFXI is the vastly superior effor for an MMORPG compared to FFXIV. FFXIV just has the benefit of modern UI and modern-ish graphics, and of course a big budget for updating. But I've played a LOT of MMORPGs and literally nothing ever came close to XI in terms of immersive scale. It also really did expansions right in that new expansions didn't make old content obsolete (for a long time at least), and instead grew the endgame horizontally as opposed to vertically, like FFXIV and most MMORPGs. That all said, it's maybe a good thing no MMO has ever been able to top XI, because XI was the kind of game you could literally lose your life in. You didn't keep playing out of FOMO or fear of being punished for not keeping up, but you genuinely enjoyed the gameplay and just wanted more.

Interesting that you thought of FF7, because this song immediately reminded me of Crystal Chronicles, which Kumi Tanioka was the composer for. She did this song as well. Nobuo and her have some tracks, mostly in the first soundtrack released for this game. Majority of the music is by Naoshi Mizuta.

Absolutely love this track. Perfectly conveys that feeling of beginning a new journey in a barren stretch of land, fighting mobs and camping with companions. Brings back so many memories too. I think of all the amazing music in the franchise, FFXI's OST is so slept on. I love FFXIV's ost, but I really wish it had more ambient tracks like this. Also although I think it's a better game overall without a doubt, FFXI was much more immersive imo.

I agree that the sound of XI as a whole is very different from other FFs. At the same time though, I've had the (crazy?) thought that this song wouldn't sound that out of place in FFIX. I don't know... like maybe it would fit some section of the Outer Continent? This is the first song I think of when I think of FFXI at all. At the risk of sounding too sappy, this song holds so much meaning for me. Having started the game in Bastok, this was the song that I was hearing as I finally went out exploring my first "zone" that wasn't a town. And because of that, it's a reminder of when I used to play, how it all started, and what that incredible experience the game ended up being. Really looking forward to more FFXI reactions- there's some really great stuff to hear.

This is such a very sad tune which does well at emphasising on just how desolate the Gustaberg area is. It fits in with the sadness of the plight of the Galka race who were forced from their homeland and when they stumbled upon the Humes in the nation of Bastok were badly mistreated and used for heavy and dangerous labor that often resulted in many Galka being injured or even killed. The Galka race still remain being discriminated against by the Humes.

Watching my brother playing this game for the first time, wandering into Gustaberg killing monsters, music playing in the background, made me fall in love with the game that way. There was something magical about this world, everything felt vast, and you could meet people from all over the world, it was amazing. Funny enough I started on the San D'oria side, but this music will always be the top 1 in my heart, surpassing Ronfaure by far.

Gustaberg was one of the starting zones/areas (The Republic of Bastok was based here), the zones are very rocky and arid, not quite a desert as it's mostly flat lands closed in by big hills. FFXI was a whole huge world, the game play was slow and methodical turn based and moving around the world took a while even mounted on chocobos or using the airships, so we either got to really enjoy the music or dread it (inb4 San d'Oria's faux bagpipes). Funny that you comment that "it doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy", it was developed to mimic/homage MMO's of it's era like Everquest and Ultima Online, and the level of grind and pace was very in line with these older massive worlds.

Oh man, what a nostalgia trip. 19 years ago when I played this on my PS2, I started out in the city of Bastok (located in the region of Gustaberg). Walking out the city gates for the first time as a level 1 red mage, I heard this song and knew I'd discovered something amazing, but I didn't know how much the game would change my life. I made friendships, online and off, that have persisted to this day. My two best friends from high school, who are still like brothers to me, we bonded over this game. Hell, I met my WIFE in this game. We have a child now! I have a son who exists, indirectly, because of this game. Absolutely wild to think about. I haven't played in over a decade. I'm not sure if I ever will again, as I spend most of my game time playing FF14 or Destiny 2. But FF11... Yeah. It will always have a special place in my heart.

Yes~ More XI music! The entire soundtrack just gives you nostalgic vibes. I'm strictly a XIV player but I did go and marathon every cutscene from XI over the course of a few weeks because I knew I'd never be able to handle the archaic systems the game has. It's 100% worth it! For anyone in the same boat (or not able to afford a subscription), I recommend Korvana's channel if anyone is looking to binge the story! I'll add that while the music in XIV is catered to elevating the story and action, XI's soundtrack is meant to be music in the background that is just easy on the ears and relaxing in most cases.

If anything, you should take a listen to tracks like Ruler of the Skies, Pso'Xja, Awakening, The Celestial Capital - Al'Taieu, the Garden of Ru'Hmet, and the 5 odes . Final Fantasy XI is... special. It's a very old-school MMO, and not the type of thing you're likely to enjoy if you were brought into the genre by World of Warcraft or other games with the same design philosophy. I stopped playing FFXI not too long before the original version of Final Fantasy XIV released, but didn't really get into XIV until A Realm Reborn. I did also end up taking a trip down memory lane and revisiting XI about two years ago. It's a lot easier to play these days, but the story (especially the dialogue) is just embarrassingly dated, tbh.

This is pure nostalgia for me. I have so many memories of grinding in Gustaberg, resting to heal, hearing the goblin aggro sound off screen, running for my life in sheer terror, hoping I don't die before I zone the train of mobs I have following behind me. Good times. Edit: FFXI is very much the old school adventure, akin to D&D and EverQuest, whereas FFXIV is a post-WoW MMO that is much more themeparky. I love both, but they are wildly different games, and even among MMOs, FFXI stands by itself as wholly unique.

I would also highly recommend Echoes of a Zephyr, a re-imagined "brighter" version of this song with the same instruments but in a different context. Huge Chrono Cross vibes in that song as well.

Gustaberg's music always makes me happy. It takes me back to a new and wonderful time in my life, the first time I experienced an MMO. It's my favorite of the FFXI tracks. Windurst and Sarutabaruta have nice music too, but I always most liked the music on the Bastok path to Jeuno, like Rolanberry Fields. There's a TON of gems in FFXI if you pause to listen. Base game, RoZ, and CoP have the best combined OSTs. What's really cool with Gustaberg is seeing people recreate the music. One trick I see in those videos, where you have a drum that has a wobbly sound is they press into the drum while making the strike, hold it, and let it go. You're also right in your insight about 11 vs. 14. 11 is VERY slow paced. Even when you were doing experience parties to level up, it was so slow, you could talk to people. In 14, it's so fast, you don't have a lot of time to talk. In 11, you'd play with a group of people for 1 to 4 hours, and you'd make friends. In 14, you group up with some randos, you have some fun, 20 minutes later they're gone and you probably won't see them again. You still make friends, but in different ways. Most of the 11 community migrated to 14 so, it's not that it's a different community. 11 is just a different beast, and it's very much of its time in the PS2 era. And as things are, 11 is best left in happy memories as it's very demanding of time in ways 14 is not. Most of us played 11 in our late teens and early 20s, and now that we're in our 30s, we can't commit to games like that anymore. We need something we can play for 30 minutes and get stuff done. 11 required whole day long commitments for some quests. It was an epic adventure, but I can't spend 2 hours navigating Riverne Site A2, getting to the boss, wiping, and waiting for everyone's 2 hour abilities to cool down any more. New systems like Trusts make it solo friendly today but... I just can't dedicate the time. And Gustaberg is an area. It's the area outside of 1 of the 3 starting cities, in this case The Republic of Bastok.

@@Varizen87 Just really wasn't a fan of cramming absolutely everyone level 30+ into one zone, to say nothing of how absurdly fast xp was there; if you were leveling you would have no idea how to play your job at higher levels. The rest of the world became a ghost town with all the leveling parties and merit parties cleaned out of them.
@Varizen87
@Varizen87 Жыл бұрын
@@Toksyuryel and those are points I can respect. It did reduce how active the old zones were. I would push back on not knowing how to play jobs though... Most off 11 was standing around waiting for an auto attack, pressing some macros every 5 minutes on cool down, and keeping Refresh up as RDM. Bard was probably the only job that required any thought, and Black Mage lost any main thought when skill chains lost favorability. We were a community hard set in our ways and extremely dismissive of ANYTHING that challenged the Status Quo unless it was demonstrably more effective. But then again... the Dev Team heavily enforced a certain play style outside of allowing Ninjas to tank, which they tried their damnedest to nerf into oblivion. But also... sitting around waiting for auto attacks and the TP gauge to fill is why it was easier to socialize in 11 than 14. That's what I miss most. The slow pace.

At least 80% of the zones in XI had zero music until later expansions, but the few zones that did, the music was so incredibly awesome and invokes extreme amounts of nostalgia upon hearing them, 10+ years later. As for older generations, FFXI was first a Playstation2 game, so that's probably why.

FFXI definitely doesn't sound like most other FF games. Mizuta is the primary composer, and he definitely puts a unique spin on the music. There are a lot of songs with intentionally discordant sections, and you can always tell it's part of FFXI when that happens, kinda like you can with leitmotifs in FFXIV.

Aww no another live chat I missed for a song I love. Some people have made truly inspiring remixes of this track. The very first character I made started out in Bastok (later switched to San d'Oria and never looked back) and I have strong memories of the region and this tune, both good and bad lol - like the time a Goblin chased my ass all the way to the town gate and I was struck with disbelief as the NPC "Guards" just stood there doing nothing. For reference, the whole region is mountainous with very little in the way of vegetation, surrounded by the ocean. The Republic of Bastok itself is actually built around a huge mine, and relies heavily on airships and naval transport, and is loosely based on colonial America. This is of course Nobuo's work I believe as he did the bulk of the base game and some of Zilart. It wasn't until Chains of Promathia until Naoshi took over, but even so they must have worked together to a degree as stylistically, even the core tracks of the game share similarities.

As a FF14 player, I've looked at but never played FF11. But I know a fair few people who do play both, and I think it's relatively common. I doubt that Square-Enix has ever considered it, but we've discussed the possibility of them bundling subscriptions or something because though they are definitely different games there could still be a large overlap if you lessened the hurdles to entry. Of course the biggest reason I haven't done it is the time commitment.

I know this reaction is quite late and also, I haven't seen many of your reaction videos. Actually a Nier Automata track or two. This was way before you posted this and I was actually enjoying Sea of Stars. I'll fill you in on the composers. This was probably one of the last projects Nobuo Uematsu was on, at least Final Fantasy wise when still with Square Enix. He started his own company as a free lancer and has still worked for SE since. He has still composed FFXIV 1.0 when it was announced and came out around 2009~2010. He seemed to get away more from orchestral type music and actually started to go more towards a rock/metal phase. This has been more notable from Blue Dragon, a project he was part of with other former members of the dream team (Chrono Trigger). This was a game not developed by SE, but with Hironobu Sakaguchi and Akira Toriyama, the fathers of Final Fantasy and Dragon Ball. Kumi Tanioka was another SE composer who didn't do much mainline work but did compose for Chocobo Dungeon. Right along with FFXI, she also composed the music for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. This game was a different beast from the typical Final Fantasy games. She had her own mind on her compositions and wanted to create "World Music", where she took inspirations from different cultures. The soundtrack did quite suit the game as it played kinda like a fairy tale book story. Gustaberg is still a bit of an odd man out compared to the rest of her compositions along with her Mithra theme, but you can hear some of the similarities of her work between FFCC and FFXI, most notably "Unite, Descent" and "Awakening". Minori and other PlayOnline themes of hers use similar instrumentation to FFCC. Naoshi Mizuta became the main composer for FFXI and has carried on composing the rest of the soundtracks beyond Chains of Promathia. He has managed to keep the soundtrack sounding pretty consistent over the additional expansion packs. He has been behind quite some of the tracks in FF13, but also 4 heroes of light, and a few other notable games published by Capcom. As for FFXI as a game, it was indeed new. Online gaming was still very novel and whole MMORPG worlds was rare and unknown. FFXI actually released very shortly before WoW and also was the first game to actually provide cross platform play between PC and PS2. The difficulty was ramped up high that little to nothing was actually soloable. Death around every corner, beyond Level 10 you were supposed to grind levels with parties and fighting open world mobs. Healers were even offered lots of gil just to fill the party slots for leveling up at the beginning. There were no cross world instances and the need to play together encouraged making friends and behaving well on the worlds you played on. Reputation by being civil mattered. The combat was not so fast paced unless you had specific builds or tactics that you could play content solo through few of the strong jobs. Stuff like blink SAM, RDM/NIN or THF/NIN combos. It is vastly different from XIV, you could easily grab a quick snack or do some secondary task during play if it went smoothly, half the game was reliant on communication and doing things together. Skillchains and magic busts were an actual thing that's foreign to most XIV players, I'm sure. The game is not what it used to be, but still has a bit of charm, if only for some nostalgia. Quite some of the music is memorable, and I get goosebumps from some songs when I hear them again after a long time. Sorrow was a composition by Nobuo, and it's very emotional. It worked really well in some scenes. One Last Time is also one of the most iconic tracks any FFXI fan will remember. I hope you will enjoy more tracks from this game. It's dear to the hearts it has touched.

The whole ost for ffxi is a masterpiece and was always my favourite until shadowbringers hit. 16 years of great memories, the real true mmo that forced people to band together

Well since you did this one, I'm gonna have to suggest Ronfaure from FFXI. It's one of Uematsu's contributions :)

There are definitely some more intense battle themes from XI, you've just been dodging them so far. XD
