FFXI from 2004-2008 was lightning in a bottle; it was something that you had to be there for. But it wasn't very light handed with casuals and was a massive time sink. Also, nostalgia makes people quick to forget all of the frustrating things about it that Square Enix deliberately kept in so they could rack up more money from subscriptions of people trying to get everything they wanted from endgame content. The community and fellowship was what made it so great and fun to explore. It was a truly imaginative experience in a video game. Although all of that is gone now, it's at least way more accessible for casual gameplay and everyone can fairly level up the jobs they love playing most. Ultimately, it is what it is. I don't hate what it has become but the only way I'd be able to play this is if I had a time machine so that I could be reunited with all of my old friends and LS mates again because that's what made it all so fun to play. Also, I'm woefully behind and trying to play catchup all over again isn't particularly fun for me. I tried. I leveled RNG up and got some decent gear for it but I quickly got bored and uninterested afterwards again and haven't played it since nor felt any desire to.
