Vayne is criminally overlooked. Hes definitely not the most interesting antagonist, nor the most original. But some pieces of his speeches are absolutely some of the best among the entire Series! Yakusoku no Ji Yeah, Vayne is a decent brother at least to Larsa. Willing to do the dirty work to ensure he will not have to and even gave him opportunities to stand up for his own ideals if they don’t see eye to eye.

He also isn't a 'bad guy' per-say, a little too ambitious for his own good, but still not evil. He was told that there is a race of 'higher beings' playing god with the fate of humanity, and was offered the chance to give humanity the power to control their own destiny. With the bonus of becoming the most powerful being in the world. However even that is him just trying to look out for Arcadia. He didn't envision a world where everyone suffers under Arcadia's boot; he envisioned a world where everyone prospered and had the freedom to choose their own destiny.....under Arcadia's boot. Look Vayne is a Ultra-Nationalist there is no way around it, but at least he isn't like Hitler or The Young Turks.

I agree with everything else you said aside from the fact that you are a Fan of the forms He changes into...I just didn't like it. Vayne, to me...embodies the Royal, handsome...highly intelligent, Well dressed...Muscular, but not like what He turns into...Just a very Royal type, aesthetic person. When he was defeated and dying, Venat came to him and he said "you must find another" rather than desperately clinging to power. Truly royal until the end, how he held himself in that dignity.

Although, in the cutscene after you defeat the Undying...How they made Him look during that was fantastic...I felt awful for Him...You can see Him writhing; fighting the attaching pieces of the airship as they began falling to pieces out of the Undying form they had just assumed...My head canon is that He thought perhaps for all of ONE second, that He may have a chance at survival as He was helping rip pieces of the Bahamut from his body...But then, things just quickly go to Hell. He screams in agony, tossing back his head as an intense light begins surrounding his face...His screams, sound just as you'd expect a Human who is experiencing the agony of certain Death WOULD sound...however, for maybe 2 seconds, all that was Human in His frantic final thrashes and cries turn into that of an animalistic ROAR; something absolutely demonic...Venat then realizes Vayne is of no worth anymore...He/She/It summarily bails. Then...BOOM. Vayne Carudas Solidor... Thank you for - WHILE in your own methods....Going about Protecting this Country, during your rule, you handled and went about securing the Country as best you could; in your own ways...As according to our own visions...of what a prosperous Land should look/operate like...Utopia...Fare thee Well.

@@CellarDoorx06 As a sidenote: Venat does not abandon Vayne at the end. The reason why she joins with him is so that they can die together. Her ambitions have been fulfilled, so she decides that Vayne will not die alone. Essentially, the final battle is the equivalent of going out gun blazing, knowing that you already lost. Neither Vayne nor Venat expected to maintain the Undying form for long, except to maybe kill the party while at it.

I gave Gabranth the chance to take Vayne out himself because he deserves it. Just healed and buffed him throughout the fight and had to help him with the swords because he stopped attacking, but left Vayne completely to him. Took him about 20-30 min because I didn't notice the problem with the swords at first, his damage is pretty low though. No wonder he stood no chance against my team before or even Basch alone :( Love Gabranth, he's the best!

It's interesting to note that out of all available Guests, Larsa is the only REAL Guest member that joins the twice and stay alive through the course of the game. Ashe (Amalia) and Bash were Guests but became permanent, and Vossler, albeit joined twice, died early in the game. Larsa is also grouped together with the permanent parties in one of the boxes' art while the other guests weren't, essentially telling us that he's not just a normal Guest. I wished Larsa could join the group permanently although I do understand why they decided to not do that while still keeping his role imperative in the development of the story

Siegahertz Carmin The job system in the "international" version wasn't all that good either, as it had 12 jobs, and 6 characters. Now that you can use 2 per characters, you are able to have the entire skill set without everyone fighting the same. But what actual makes fights less tedious? You can speed up x4. Add to that the removal of damage caps and a certain nuisance got a MUCH needed nerf.

I know he's not the usual type of FF villains, he's hardly connected to the main cast at a personal level, he doesn't appear often, and his bravado is hardly about destroying the world, but I still think what they did with him is much better than I first acknowledged with the original release of the game. I believe it boils down to one thing: He is sane Being sane is not something you would use to describe most Final Fantasy villains. Kefka is a nutjob, Sephiroth lost his mind over all the experiments and Hojo's manipulation, Ultimecia is part-crazy, part-cryptic. etc etc. There's mostly two types of villains: the crazies (Kefka) and the symbols (Yu Yevon). Vayne, however, is sane. He's 100% sane. He keeps his sanity throughout the course of the story and everything he does is something that he does in full control of his mind and body. His scheming is cruel, but he does not do it without a purpose. And I think it changes a lot of things because you can stick an ideology to the man in ways you can't for the others. It's not just power against power, Vayne is not the thing that separates peace and the apocalypse. His plan has nothing to do with world destruction. It's about a battle of ideology. Vayne's only skill that he excels at is not his strength, because he isn't strong. Someone could go and kill him if they had the chance. Or that he is unpredictable because of his mental instability, since he is sane. His skill is that he is an extremely great politician. And being a great politician is the highest form of power you could achieve in Ivalice. Most of all, Vayne did it all for a conviction that actually has a lot of merits. He wanted to create his own legacy for himself and all of mankind. For a man like him who was born into a family of doers who knows how to wield power and make history theirs to realize that this history has been preordained by a divine race is the biggest betrayal of all. His whole identity is put into question, and he has come to hate where he comes from and what he was fated to do. Vayne's only way to create his own legacy is to destroy the legacy he comes from. Man-made power, man-made legacy, man-made history. Instead of being lambs guided by would-be gods, they would become the shepherds of their own destiny. That is what Vayne wants. This freedom is worth any sacrifice, because he believes in the ability of mankind to guide themselves into a brighter future. Alongside all his cruel (but for him necessary) actions, Vayne also has a softer side that is a huge factor that guides his conviction: his brother Larsa. Vayne knows he is cruel, he knows he stained his hands with more blood than he could ever hold. But this is a role he has chosen to play for the sake of someone else, and this someone else is Larsa. Larsa is everything he isn't: he is kind, measured, hopeful. He seeks peace above all. He has none of the ambitions that defines a person from House Solidor like Vayne or his father the Emperor Gramis. To Vayne, Larsa is the beacon of hope in the future he wants to wrestle from the hands of the Occuria. Many things indicate that if Vayne's plan came to fruition, Vayne would not make himself the emperor, he would give the throne to Larsa, a person who has his hands clean. Vayne sees himself as the necessary sacrifice, the one who has to stain his hands so his younger brother doesn't have to. He just didn't realize that he would become so opposite of everything Larsa stood for that Larsa would fight him. But even that betrayal was no matter. Larsa didn't have to accept it, he just had to live with it. Vayne watches his long-term plan he thought up years ago go along perfectly. He is pretty much untouchable despite never lifting a finger. He had the resistance wiped out by putting himself as bait during the banquet, he silenced the Marquis of Bhujerba through a captive Basch, he even had several Judges on his side to do his dirty work while he put on the facade of a benevolent ruler in Rabanastre. Everything was going along perfectly, his traps were laid out with surgical precision. There was no way it could fail. Except it did. Once. Judge Ghis sought the power of the stone for himself and had had the entire fleet wiped out. It gave the Senate a perfect reason to silence the man behind the fleet, as his ambition didn't go unnoticed. Vayne had no choice but to come back to Archades and face the Senate who would have surely voted for his execution. This one failure in his plan forced him to make the most hail mary of plans: he convinced his father to die for him. While it is easy to believe that Vayne simply murdered Gramis to grab the throne, this is not what happened. Gramis gave Vayne his blessing to kill him and make it look like the Senate did it. He had grown soft in his later years, but not so much as to see the Senate destroy his entire bloodline. Vayne gave him one last option as his own head was on the line. Either leave Vayne to die, and see Larsa be made a puppet of the Senate or even assassinated for them to make a power grab. Or die now and guarantee the future of House Solidor. Vayne had instantly turned things around. He wasn't the one left with no option anymore, it was his father. Gramis agreed for his life to be taken for the future of House Solidor and disbanded the Senate for the "murder" of the Emperor. The only thing left was to gain the trust of the Judge Magisters. They are the military arm of the Emperor, if they are not on his side, he does not have power at all. That's why he needed to get rid of the one person he knew wouldn't follow his rule no matter what: Drace. Other than her, the only one left whose allegiance is unclear and needed to be convinced was Gabranth. But more than convinced, he needed to be tamed. This is why Vayne had ordered Gabranth to execute Drace in order to prove his loyalty to the Empire. He killed two birds with one stone. He got rid of Drace, put an ultimatum on Gabranth to prove his loyalty right here and now. There was no one to oppose him anymore. Vayne once again excelled as a politician. Why I'm telling you this is because I'm talking about Vayne like I'm talking about a protagonist more than an antagonist. Vayne was written as his own character with his own story. He wasn't made to only exist through the eyes of the party. He was made to stand on his own. He goes through his own journey alongside the party. He does it separately, but concurrently. Which is why you see many cutscenes about Vayne that doesn't concern the party at all. He evolves progressively as he watches his plan that he thought up years ago going along or fail. He adjusts, goes through failures, evolves as you go along. But Vayne is not just the antagonist, he is the protagonist of his own story. Even more fitting for someone whose true purpose is to become the only actor of his life. Which means the conflict between him and the party is not about how they have to save the world, but how different they are at an ideological level. One sought freedom from the overseers of mankind, the others sought freedom from the oppression and misery they suffered by the hands of another man. In the end they both won. And they were both right.

I really like the concept behind him, but I think the developers should have done more to make him feel like a threatening villain in the game by giving him more personal connections to the party members. Vayne is a literary villain, and he stands out among Final Fantasy antagonists because of it. Too bad he's overlooked because he is not an in-your-face villain.

The funny thing is, if he hadn’t done what he did, the Occuria would still have had more chances to puppeteer the world as they see fit. Despite the horrible things he did, and despite the fact he was stopped by the protagonists, he was instrumental in the party actually doing everything that led to the destruction of the Sun-Cryst and the cutting of the Occuria’s strings.

This game is full of contradictions: - Vaan is the main character...and he is not the main character - Ashe is not the main character...and she is the main character - Balthier is indeed the leading man...but he's not. - Dr. Cid is not the good guy... and yet he is the game's true main villain - Basch is Gabranth...and yet he is not - Gabranth is Basch...and yet he is not. If you guys played all of Final Fantasy XI and/or the HD Remaster of Final Fantasy XII, you should know by now that Gabranth takes the title of Final Fantasy's Darth Vader. Golbez may have acted like Darth Vader in the original Final Fantasy IV since he was mind controlled by Zemus, but he doesn't die and reforms in The After Years so that's why he lost that title. Gabranth takes the title of Final Fantasy's Darth Vader because he mimics him throughout the storyline and he dies in the end so he doesn't return in the sequel.

Gabranth doesnt really act like Vader at all. His reasoning for turning on his people and aiding the empire in his world is for completely different reasons, and he doesnt even go through some drastic character transition when he does so. He's always himself, remorse for his actions and betrayals and all. Really, when you get down to it, his reasoning for doing what he did was almost always centered on the sake of Larsa or the late emperor, even his redemption at the end. This story isnt even a depiction of light versus dark or good or evil, it's honestly probably one of the most grey FF stories, since the antagonists arent themselves villains and wanted the same thing the heroes do, but through conflicting means. Sure there's some aesthetic similarities between the world of Ivalice and the SW universe, but most of that similarity is simply because 12 is a traditional story of knights and political intrigue, with science-fiction tech thrown in but with magical qualities, and SW can literally be boiled down to the traditional unknown young hero from a small village saves the princess by defeating the black knight/evil wizard story, complete with the being trained by a wise old warrior trope, only it takes place in space with alien technology. 12 and SW arent nearly as blatantly similar as people seem to enjoy depicting them. If the musical score wasnt so similar sounding to the orchestration of the movies' soundtracks there'd probably be unimaginably less people making the comparison. Same for Gabranth. Sure, he wears a full-body suit of armor. And, being adorned with a helmet, it muffles and distorts his voice while worn...but that's honestly kinda where the similarity ends when you get right down to it. Most parties here won't be that strong. Those attacks have a tendency to be pretty game changing at that point. However, final bosses nowadays rarely reach level 99.

The attacks have an effective distance on them so there is a logic to the range. However, the engine uses auto-resolve in order to calculate accuracy and damage so if the atttack has already been rolled in the sequence, it will hit regardless of range. This is common to most games that use this form of combat resolution.

I pretty much vowed to never touch this game again after I beat it. I couldn't stand this game, the gameplay Imo was just boring and stupid, and leveling up was just far too difficult in this game. even the main villain was a disappoint for me, haven't played this game in years but I don't recall bumping into vayne all that much in the game, gabranth seemed more like a worthy main villain.
