How can anyone defend the current FF excuse of: "it gets good in a few hours"? I get slogging through tutorials or a slow start but it shouldn't take hours for a game to get good, I should be hooked and wanting to play more after around 30 minutes or less. Remember what you we're doing in older FF games at the start in order to get you sucked? FF7- Committing terrorism against and evil corporation ending in a badass explosive escape. FF8- Beating and forcing a summon to join forces with you as an entrance exam for your school's military force. Maybe not as strong as 7's start but at least you're not pushing a car. FF9- Kidnapping a princess under the guise of being a travelling theater troupe only to discover she wants to be kidnapped. FF10- Your world gets wrecked by a giant whale and you're transported to a new one. Fell free to add more from FF games pre 13, I'm sure they're all more interesting and have you wanting more.

you mean like the part where enemies attack through walls, the hit direction is screwed up, hard enemy encounters dying by bad programming, and messing with the way you control the game on purpose don't count as "fucking you around"
@jdjohnson15918 жыл бұрын
Most of those are design flaws which, frankly, are minor and do not destroy or get in the way of the combat, nor are they the reason the combat is challenging. Heck, if anything, the lousy hit detection was actually helpful in combat than a nuisance. Also, I'd like to know how you "die by bad programming," because I'm assuming you mean you die because of a glitch and not because you just stumble across an enemy much more powerful than you, which is the very nature of the Souls series. I'd also like to know how Dark Souls "messes with the way you control the game on purpose." No, the only time I can think of where Dark Souls intentionally fucks you around is with the surprise dragon on the bridge, and even that's debatable since you can recover your losses after you die.
@windwaker0rules8 жыл бұрын
whenever i hear why dark souls is hard its also satisfying however there are so many cheese strats like clipping bosses outside the battlefield, and making the enemies walk off cliffs that it loses its key message of hard but fair (bed of chaos, ceaseless discharge), in fact most people applaud the game for this crap as if it was intentional, i'm not saying the game is bad but it gets way too much praise for a game that does a lot of the stuff a trope filled jrpg would do gameplay wise. And when i mean fucking with the player, well the best example is that god damn underground level where the main challenge is just how fucking dark it is, or how some of the status screen displays lie to you.
@IAmKnightsDawn8 жыл бұрын
windwaker0rules I've never understood the dark souls is hard bit. I stream on twitch and run through sl1 whole way around the game. Sl120 ng+4 and still a piece of cake. Astroneer is harder to survive in than dark souls lol.
@jdjohnson15918 жыл бұрын
"whenever i hear why dark souls is hard its also satisfying however there are so many cheese strats like clipping bosses outside the battlefield, and making the enemies walk off cliffs" I've played Dark Souls through almost twice and, aside from maybe the bad hit detection, I don't remember the game being as glitchy as you say. I don't remember bosses clipping through walls, and enemies rarely seemed to walk off cliffs (no matter how much I wanted some of them) unless I intentionally pushed them. "it loses its key message of hard but fair (bed of chaos, ceaseless discharge)," Hold on, what was so bad about those bosses? I mean, I guess they weren't the best bosses in the game, but how did they break the tough-but-fair rule? " i'm not saying the game is bad but it gets way too much praise for a game that does a lot of the stuff a trope filled jrpg would do gameplay wise." You mean challenging real-time combat, beautiful and generally solid level design, a well-constructed metroidvania world, a dark depressing atmosphere, a subtle story where you look at the background and listen closely to dialog to piece it together, themes about fate and hope and overcoming obstacles, and everything else Dark Souls is praised for are all common JRPG tropes? Because that's what people praise Dark Souls for. And to be honest, I remember few to no JRPG tropes from the game, or at least none which got in the way of the game or made it feel unoriginal. "And when i mean fucking with the player, well the best example is that god damn underground level where the main challenge is just how fucking dark it is," Unless you went a little ways into the level and found the skull lantern, whereupon the only challenge is switching between the lantern and whichever weapon you replaced it with to both navigate the level and fight the monsters. "or how some of the status screen displays lie to you." Maybe it's just because I didn't really pay much attention to the status screens (or at least what I think you mean by "status screens"), but how exactly did they lie to you?
@caewynn8 жыл бұрын
The lack of explained story is my biggest issue with the game. Sure, the character backstories are explained in the anime and the whole war is kind of explained in the movie, but they left that shit out of the game itself. When the king dies in the game, it was just a spliced in cutscene and had no real emotional impact. (That also might be because I am a heartless asshole, but games have moved me before.) Ten years of development and all it really has to show for it is a myriad of repetitive fetch quests, a poorly executed story, and an OK combat system.
@koolets37888 жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure it was a marketing decision to leave a big portion of the story for other mediums (i.e the movie and the anime) and then they will slowly implement into the actual game after the market is already over for the movie. Even now we are hearing that they are adding cutscenes to make the game's story 'better'. Dog shit move Square Enix.

Agreed, but at least it made some degree of sense. Compare it to FFXIII, which started off WAY too far in medias res without even explaining its own goddamn terminology (they keep repeating the words Fal'Cie, L'Cie, Sanctum, Psicom, Cocoon and Focus over and over without ever clarifying exactly what they are), alienating the audience and making it incredibly difficult to give a shit about what the characters are doing or why. It doesn't help that they spend most of the first half of the story acting like complete assholes with no sense of camaraderie, unlike in XV.
@matthewmuir88844 жыл бұрын
When the game started out its ten-year development as something completely different from how it ended up (for one thing, it was originally called Final Fantasy Versus 13), that can happen. FF15's development was a nightmare and both of its directors not-so-subtly blame Square Enix's upper management at every opportunity. One of them even quit Square Enix.

I think you might've misunderstood a few things: 1) The struggle you should have felt was from Noctis losing his father, his father lying to him about the invasion even though Regis knew it was coming, the loss of the kingdom, and not seeing Lunafreya. 2) Itis said in the game that Galdio is his protector and trainer, Ignis has been taking care of Noctis for quite some time, and Prompto is just his friend. I'd say you do get depth for Ignis and Prompto, but not from Gladio really. It might've been better if you seen the anime before playing but since it's not in the game it's fair if you didn't watch it. But the connections were still there in the game 3) The carrots you actually needed to finish 1 sidequest where you had to trade them for Ulwat berries, and to get some pretty useful weapons that you could upgrade
@ihatevoyager8 жыл бұрын
The problem is they never go into detail with most of this. They show a few scenes from kingsglaive about the empire invading insomnia and that's it. Then they show a few short scenes of noctis and his father. Not enoug hto really care about what is happening or the bonds between noctis and his father. The group of 4 guys had good chemistry and Ardyn was a solid villian but outside of that I didn't care about anyone. The story is really horribly paced.
@KiiDMaGiiK8 жыл бұрын
True I can agree to most of that. You only get a small glimpse of Noctis and Regis relationship, but there was something there like I mentioned, Regis withholding information. and yeah i think the friendship of the 4 guys was really done well, from their interactions through the game and in battle. The writing gets really weird sometimes. As somebody who hasnt played most of the 3d newer final fantasies this one was pretty good. Metro Sexual road trip simulator that was.
@KiiDMaGiiK8 жыл бұрын
Arstotzkan At The DMZ ah yeah I did feel a little strange at that part but then they explained it a bit more. Gladio was mad because Luna and Regis sacrificed themselves for him and Noctis, insteadof realizing that it was time to man up and follow through, he was just moping around instead. Luna and Regis needed him to be strong and fulfill his role as "The Chosen King"

You know, I actually can sympathize with Noct's struggle. Not because of anything similar I've gone through, but simply by imagining how it must feel like to be him. Now, be warned spoilers ahead. You see, you are right that everything had been handed to him throughout his life, but all the cool stuff he got was also accompanied by the uncalled for huge responsibility of having to lead his city once his father died, and not only that, because you could see that as something possible as well, however, I'm addition to this, Noct was also predestined to die for his future kingdom (as far as I can tell, because I'm at the last chapter and haven't finished the game yet. But I still believe it's a valid point, since this is how Noct sees things, regardless of how the story actually ends). Now, not only do you have the responsibility of being a good and obedient prince, a future king, a good student (as to not tarnish his father's reputation), but he also had to live knowing that he would have to die for everyone else, with no choice in the matter, since the moment of his birth. Now, add that to the fact that as soon as he leaves his city to marry his also predetermined bride, he finds out his hometown has been invaded, and his father and probably a lot of people he cared about got killed. Then, his predetermined bride also dies, a childhood friend of his to boot. I don't know, I think it's not as big of a stretch to believe that a teenager with all this weight on his shoulders might be moody, he did not choose any of this, after all. Additionally, his companion's motivation and backstory is revealed during the game (and in the Anime), and I believe that those are believable. As for the gameplay, I actually found myself enjoying the view as my AI companion drove to my next quest location while some nostalgic music plays in the background. Also, I don't think the combat system is too bad, although some of the things that were removed are a shame, but it's still decent. In conclusion, I actually like FFXV, so I'm obviously biased, even though this is my first Final Fantasy ever.

@IskandarTheWack8 жыл бұрын
Emo? Gladio is literally the traditional view of a strong man. Ignis is literally like someone you'd see working in a highish position in a corporation, like a secretary or something. Prompto matches the kpop since he's stylish and all that, however you realize it's all built around insecurities that he has and he's trying to look his best for that reason, he's pretty self conscious, however not emo. And noctis literally has the worst things happen to him and yet he still doesn't become emo. Honestly only idiots think they are emo, people who have the autism to believe that having long hair makes someone emo no matter what hairstyle it is in.

Otkusi Sebe Chlen The specials have just as much over the allies as turn based final fantasies so that's wrong. How can it does that stuff? Because fucking magic from a crystal and the healing effects of potions that don't exist in the real world. Deal with it, this is a better final fantasy than your favorite one, nostalgia all you want but don't let it blind you.
@NaturesFlame8 жыл бұрын
I mean, that's just wrong. I don't care if you like it, that's fine. I don't care if you don't like it. I don't even care if its your opinion that its the best. But to come here and say its the best to date? I want some of what you're smokin'. Half the technical depth of every other final fantasy, with half the combat system depth of every other hack and slash, Kingdom Hearts had a better real time combat system than this nightmare.
@IskandarTheWack8 жыл бұрын
Bishamon The other final fantasies are extremely dated, just because you liked playing ff7 as a kid doesn't mean it's that good of a game. THe remake might be good however. Ff15 has a lot of technical depth, more than previous ff games so you're fucking lying. THere is more depth in this game than any kingdom hearts game. You've not played the game or you simply suck at it's combat.

I only got through it due to a week sick and nothing else to play, and was actually pleasantly surprised to find a little bit of a game at the end of the long drooling tunnel of boredom. To be fair, it took a long time to get out of the first city in VII, but nothing like XIII. Would have been a lot better if they'd replaced the first 15 hours of the game with a 2 minute skippable cut scene.

As a die-hard fanboy of this FF game, I just want to defend the combat by saying it's the coolest. Using the magical blade to warp around is bad-ass and the magic effects are stunning. Dx Certain boss fights will forever stick in my mind for how breathtaking they looked. The one against the (forgot the name) water dragon was epic, and a mini boss fight that was so anime as certain mini-cutscenes played in the middle of your combo's as you both fight in mid-air. I just wish there was more I could do in there. Because one mechanic of the game I would have liked to use more is the feature for turning your car into a flying vehicle. The sound effects and the car transformation never get old for me, it just looks so cool and flying around in it is a blast. It has an ng+ mode that came out later, but sadly you don't keep the flying car upgrade which is the one thing stopping me from making endless ng+ games. Again though, really hope Yahtzee played beyond the carrot farm because there was no other "inane bs". The carrot farm might have been a load of inane bs, but it looks like the idea never got beyond "oh, and you can grow carrots." It's really an odd addition to the game.

Gladio is pretty much a kingsglaive character. Ignis would fit in to a group like that honestly, he's pretty much thrown into noctis' life like gladio by regis (noct's dad) Prompto is the only normally achieved friend noctis got out of the group and he's a good character, the anime does a lot of the building where you can see hints of it in the game.

You don't really farm the vegetables, you just set em and forget them, you come by any length of time to collect them after you've slept and give them to some guy right next to the patch for powerful upgradable weapons. Yes, the pacing is so rushed!!! I want to hear the conversations between the characters, at least let me know why what's happening in the world is important! I was honestly confused: Who was the lady holding luna, and why should I give a crap? The cutscenes need to have less edits and less cuts, if there's a character that needs to emote then let them, it won't be as good as pixar quality, but I felt that's what made games alright, they had the time and ability to flesh out the characters, because its not a two hour long movie. Final Fantasy XII had a dam good story, I understood what was going on, and why it was important to the characters. So my final verdict: Square, if you can, please include all the content, extra (new) cutscenes to flesh out the characters backstories (include more of Ravus and empirical families (what happened to Arenea?), more ( challenging) boss fights,nd take your time building up the story of FFXV in the later updates, so that fans - new and old - can take their time enjoying it

FF15 is a good game hands down. Has flaws for sure, but the positives are far more memorable. If it didn't go through game development hell, and side quests provided insight on story rather than filler it would be hard to criticize. Combat is fun even if it is simple, and the characters aren't shit. TBH they are rather japanese type of characters so I can see how U.S players don't quite get it. Oddly enough the story reads as a metaphor for the game's development. I'm not saying this is fact, but it just matches conceptually. *story without spoiling* = You need to do something very important. Along the way you had a lot of fun with the game/what it provides/what the characters experience. In the end what you had to do had to happen. You complete the game, and all moves on because... it had to happen. Essentially detailing the fun times one would have working to achieve desired goal, but the sacrifice required to reach it. Cut scenes are beautiful, animations are beautiful, and combat is fun even with it being simple. It seems to have been rushed to be something, but could have been much more. Given the situation of being through that sort of "what the fuck are we doing with this game?" scenario. They put together a very enjoyable experience. It doesn't deserve hate for what it is, but it does deserve the criticisms. Although, like I have said before, the positives are definitely memorable.

Or maybe you expect way more from videogames, and don't understand what makes a game trash? Face it... if you think FF15 is shovelware you haven't seen shit. It has flaws, but many of those flaws likely come from company politics. I enjoyed the game FOR WHAT IT WAS. It clearly was a better unfinished game than the western unfinished games being released year after year. Most of the reception comes from people with absolutely no knowledge on the conditions surrounding japanese game development. For the hell of a life the title FF15 had... the developers pulled through, and delivered a product that had aspects far from plenty of shovelware released on the daily. The post-game platforming dungeon is a perfect example of the various things they had in mind for concepts, but time was against them. That's mostly square's fault for shifting directors, etc all around. To say FF15 is plain trash would mean you likely praise any game sufficing to your fancy, or lack understanding of what the product represents. Honestly I really feel the half-assed story is a metaphorical realization of the game's life in development. There are plenty of things FF needs to figure out for the future of the series. When introducing the open world aspect it makes one wonder if they can incorporate the best aspects of each title within a new open world, or go back to the more narrow progression of the fictional world. The game IS FLAWED, but it's still a good game. Animations are fluid, japanese voice acting is appropriate(Eng dub is pretty shit), and the gameplay is far more entertaining than how you described combat, but that is somewhat a matter of opinion. The combat wasn't broken, and worked... not really an indication of a TRASH game. Just because I say it is a good game doesn't mean I praise it like all the internet gaming cretins tend to do nowadays. I enjoyed the game for what it was, and I look forward to see how they patch it up seeing they have been granted the ability to do so.

josh mcglenn here, here! 9 is easily my favorite, primarily because it is so similar to 1-5, while being more polished, having some of the best characters so far, having a fantastic story, and all around making good use of CLASSIC final fantasy elements. The new ones aren't final fantasy anymore, they just call them that to sell copies. Honestly, why are they so sci-fi? I want to fly around on an airship again while my black mage talks to a moogle, and my knight practices white magic with the white mage.

Shiva and bahamut gives hers to you for free but for the Titan and the Leviathan you have to fight them and for Ramuh you have to find special trees to get his mark (Spoiler warning) the character you forgot to mention is Ardyn and you meet him 2 times before going to the city on the sea (I forgot the name of the city so I went with what the NPCs call it) the first time you don't know who he is. The second time however he tells you his name is Ardyn and he takes you to where the Titan is
