Have you guys considered doing 60” rows? On my little hobby farm in northern MN we are testing 60” corn rows. Doubled the John Deere 7000 planter population and then shut off two rows. I’m excited to see how it works with the cover crops getting more sun into the rows.

Hey Mike! We haven't considered 60" rows, but only because of the mathematics. We're still on 38" wide rows, so the cover crops generally do a little better in our corn fields than they would in 30" spacing. And 76" is just too far between rows in my mind. The plants would have to be on top of one another to make a decent population. I've been watching other farmers tinker with 60" spacing though, and I see some benefits there. Lots of potential to build healthy soil through cover crop diversity, and potentially a lot of grazing after harvest if you have livestock.

My organic soybeans have a seeding rate of around 185000 😉🙂!

Aha! That's awesome information! I thought we might be on to something, and I think you just confirmed it. Dad always used to plant soybeans at 1.5 bu/ac. He always had good yields too. Then an agronomist told him to drop his rates to 140,000 plants per acre, and of course everyone went to seed singulation around then as well and stopped planting by weight. I had a conversation with him the other day that went something like, "The seed is relatively cheap, and the sprays and fertilizer are expensive, and your yield was better when you planted a higher population and you didn't fertilize AT ALL. Not to mention you'd crowd the weeds out better. So why are we dinking around with 140,000 plants per acre?" We shrugged at each other a lot and pretty much figured we have a plan for next year, LOL.

@@ravenviewfarm Call me suspicious but, chemical usage went up as population went down and seed prices went up 🤨😉! I think 1.5 bu might be heavy 🙂. The 185 gives adequate weed suppression even with a 10-20% death loss for germ and inter-row cultivation 👍🏻
