I absolutely loved Final Fight when I was a kid. The SNES port was a pretty faithful adaptation of the arcade version, although I think the lack of a two-player co-op mode REALLY hurt the SNES version in terms of fun and replayability.

This was a lot easier for those with the home version: 1) You started with 3 lives and got new ones at every 200,000; the arcade version started you TWO and only have an extra life at 100,000. No telling if you had continues though (SNES “Captain Commando” gave two-three lives with you only able to earn an extra at 100,000 but five continues where you only had the lives for each continue with no way to earn more afterwards-no score reset). 2). Rolento’s “Construction Area” scene was cut out. 3) The US version had “Sid and Billy” instead of “Poison and Roxy” due to their controversial status, the two “electric females” in “Captain Commando” were left as-is (despite critics questioning fan-service).

it's a much more fair gameplay wise as well. Opposed to just 3 lives in the arcade now you get 1up's by racking up score. If you REALLY want to get the best out of the snes final fight I recommend the guy version as that rids the slowdown, introduces two new powers ups (1up and invincibility), and gives color to the item pick ups. It really just plays better but at the cost of not being able to play cody.

@TheTrueBro For me I think the boss on the fourth level is the hardest and I can never defeat him without Game Genie and probably even if I defeated him and made it up to the fifth level boss (the final boss), I never would have been able to defeat him.

@towerofresonance4877 I agree, Katana was a hard boss by constantly running around and can knock you down fast and if you stand in front of him, he can hit you easily with his swords. Game Genie really helps with this game.

I'll never forget how pissed my friend was when we rented this game as kids. Not only was it not 2 player, but his favorite character Guy wasn't playable. We still enjoyed it at the end of the day and it really was one of those things that was still amazing at the time.

Believe it or not but SNES release "Final Fight Guy". You can play as guy as well as the other characters. Not sure if it was an USA release.

The version I grew up with and often watched my mom play on afternoons after we got home from school. Even after learning of the changes to some of the enemies and omission of content I still remember this version fondly. I also just noticed during the final boss that only one enemy spawns in at a time, which means that Jessica's sprite counts towards the three enemy limit on screen. It makes sense considering when Belgar rides in on his chair you can actually strike her (you monster!)

Here as well 42 in September 🙂 I owned this game for the SNES, and it was one of my favorites. In general, as far as I can remember, I only made it through for most of the times I played the game, the Bay Area and Abigail was a pain in the fucking ass to beat. It legitimately wasn’t until years later, when I was an adult, and I think this was within the last three years, that I played the game on some console, with some kind of cheat code, and actually saw what it was 😂, to friendly beat the damn game. 😂😂

The real life Mike Haggar is Kane(Glenn Jacobs) from WWE, in that he was a wrestler who became a mayor. This was one of my first SNES games because I couldn't get enough of this game in arcades.

Yes, I agree the GBA version was the best console version. Through emulation, the Japanese version had the female enemies. I have great respect for the Final Fight 2 and 3, but why no Arcade version-- I guess money was the issue. Too niche of a market for current generation?

Beat both this and Final Fight One on the GBA for the first time back in November. Although the sequels are significantly better (not to mention it doesn't hold a candle to Streets of Rage 2) and the GBA version is IMO the definitive way to play this, Final Fight on SNES still provides plenty of beat-em-up fun.

In all fairness, storage capability might have been a reason for the industrial stage's omission, but I think the real reason lies with the fact that outside of the arcades, that stage would be way too much to deal with on a sprite count front. Especially the beginning of the level with all the flames. The fights during the flame parts would've been impossible, and I remember even stronger systems like Sega CD struggling at times with it too. Honestly, I think Final Fight Guy was going to attempt to get the stage in there as both the tracks from that stage are in the game. GBA is the only system that I've seen get this stage down without any slowdown and VERY little flicker.

Final Fight SNES. Not a bad port, but one that probably should've went with a 16 MBit port later on the SNES's life with its missing characters, awful music (though I actually prefer this over the Mega CD music), and cut down animation. Thankfully, we have the SNES-exclusive sequels.

Here's my favorite tip. For the last hit of your punch combo, push away+punch. That'll make him end the combo in a throw. Works on bosses, too.
