Vaulted ceilings make for tricky HVAC rough-in’s… deal with it all the time as well! It’s always a balance between aesthetics and actually making everything work like it should.

Being an HVAC guy in FL I wondered too why the ductwork wasn’t planned beforehand and thought of the homeowners paying top top dollar for a house like that and a very nice cathedral ceiling in the kitchen but losing it because of crappy design. This kind of crap would not fly with my clients. Shame on them for being proud of calling problem solving (or valued engineering) what is nothing more than shitty planing and design all the while talking about careful scheduling among various trades. Nope. Not on my watch.

It's great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan's kzbin.infoUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

Use lattice rafters. You can use the open spaces to run ducts to the air registers and then use them for return air to the air handler. Could also add some extra insulation for an even more energy efficient roof.

Curious why the upstairs HVAC routing was an afterthought that required a design modification rather than part of the architect’s original design

I was thinking the same thing. My only guess is that the way he presented it made it sound like it was a OH Crap moment when in truth it was discussed way back in the house design and was worked out then to add the lower ceiling. Otherwise that is a pretty big screw up! However I would have thought the lower ceiling would have already been framed out/installed if it was corrected back during design stage. OK episode, didn't have as much meat to it as some of the others IMO.

With the cathedral ceiling like the kitchen the way it was. Was nice. All they needed was/is a ceiling fan. Bring the air in thru the wall or above cupboards

Don’t know about this project but a lot of architects design for the client first and let the trades figure out the details such as HVAC. Hence this situation. That’s my 18+ years of experience at least.

Did you think of keeping it vaulted but changing angle from where the vaulted ceiling starts (side wall) but lowering the interior peak by 3 to 4 feet? This would create a void/attic space but keep the vaulted look in the kitchen and you could probably carry that out into the great room in order to keep it seamless. The angle of the inside would still be nice but much less then the actual roof.

Maybe I just missed seeing it but didn’t see the cedar breather or whatever you’re going to use behind the window trim. Also wondering about the insulation for the roof. Won’t you be putting several layers of foam on top of the roof deck. The fascia doesn’t look to be set up for it. One more question. Will you ever respond to my question about the insulation drainage board on the foundation walls? Grace and peace Slick

Question for wade, for the window trim assembly: the head casing appears to be pushed forward about 1/4 inch to achieve the reveal, what do you do about the gap that occurs behind the head casing and the zip sheathing once the assembly is attached to the substraight?

Sounds like an expensive add on for the homeowners... if it was me I wouldn't sign off until the designer ate more then 50% of the cost....either switch to high velocity with small ducts or come from the floor below

I've been following this build here on YT and something I've been wondering. Would this have been an easier build if the property owner had decided to go with ICF up to the bottom of the roof line? I seem to recall from earlier episodes that cement on the island was almost easier (cheaper?) than bringing in framing lumber. . . For myself, I lived for 15 years on Long Island (mostly along the centerline) and I would _DEFINITELY_ prefer something stronger than a stick built home when dealing with a N'oreaster!

And sometimes people just have a problem pronouncing the T at the end of a word. Most people will automatically know exactly what he was saying. Then there are the speech nazi whose entire life is dedicated to looking for the slightest mistake and then jumping all over it so they can make themselves appear superior to other people. Really sad when they only way you can lift yourself up is by knocking others down.

8:06, that vaulted dining and living room framing looks amazing. It'd be a shame to cover it with drywall. I'd put finish boards inset of the framing so that architecture remains on display.

How the heck do they get utilities out there? Is it propane? I’m assuming it’s only electric available. I hope to see a geo thermal system with a water to water heat pump setup.

During the exterior window trim detail the presentor/builder states they used a thick piece of trim for the head to give it the proud look when in fact they did not use a thicker trim piece they just offset it forward and most likely their table jig is set up to keep the offset constant when pre-building these trim sets. Should have corrected this when presenting instead of continuing with false info as it makes you question of info he provides.. Very good work by Tradesman but a thumbs down to the presenter. PS: seems like a thicker piece would have been better for the install of the trim to the flat surface plane, unless they have a shim / filler behind it on wall to assist in the install or a space was intentionally required for slipping in a top flashing drip edge with sealant?
