This film brings back fond memories of the 4 years my parents and I lived in Hong Kong (1974-78). I have no memories of the inside of the airport, but we lived under the flight path just where the aircraft turned right at the Checkerboard. Thanks again for another great DVD

Sad to know that Kai Tak is no longer with us, Another breath taking idea from our past virtually eradicated. I can't help but think that future generations will never see anything like this. A Shame really. "Goodbye Kai Tak, And Thank you" - Richard Siegel

Wished the airport wasn't close. I feel kinda sad that the runway lights goes off for the last and final time.

Kai Tak is great. Thanks for bringing me there again.

I wonder what percentage of pilots who flew the checkerboard regularly were actually bummed that the newer airport approach would be easier?
@gavrilnugroho82065 жыл бұрын
Damn. Seeing those runway lights turn of actually made me sad. Wish it was still here

I was on the last ever commercial flight out of Kai Tak - CX to London. We were all given commemorative plaques, which was ironic because there was a big row about the weight of cabin bags and they were taking bags away to put in the hold

Amazing historic artifact for Kai Tak fans! Thanks for posting this.

Because the approach of rwy 31 is way too dangerous and the single rwy can't handle the increasing air traffic.

Totally out of curiosity Is the airport still there ? I mean i know it was closed, but was it demolished ? or the runway is still there ? Feels kinda sad to see the runway lights go off, forever
@juggaajerry10 жыл бұрын
It was demolished and there is now a cruise ship terminal
@TravellingNomad818 жыл бұрын
Regal Hotel is still there but of course it is no longer "Regal Airport Hotel". The passenger terminal and the walk-bridge that connects the hotel to the terminal remained for years before they finally demolished the terminal.
@nurekaevidyanti38196 жыл бұрын
In addition, you could still find the remaining runways that had been memorialised there.
@m1co2945 жыл бұрын
Ashish Samant they made a bridge bearing the name of the airport, and a little portion of the runway is still there, and you can even tell where the terminals were cuz of the gigantic space right next to the cruise terminal

I assume the airport was closed because of the dangerous approach pattern? I find it highly impressive that many spotters turned out for the final landings and departure.
@ElAl4ever12 жыл бұрын

did you film the part where the runway lights were turned off for the last time
@BrickyardE17012 жыл бұрын
Sorry for it to be a waste of your time but this was a historical airport. The approaches seen in the video as well as the airport was an amazing sight for people to see. Especially with the way Hong Kong has expanded over the years.

what the last plane too land
@classicgamer98266 жыл бұрын
They could of kept it opened as a regional airport.
@pnalc12 жыл бұрын
they could have kept the airport working as a domestic airport, i'm sure that what they were worried about was the safety but there's a diference between a 747 or A343 and a 737 or A320 landing in such conditions.... It's just so sad, and imagine how good it would be to have a Kai Tak Airshow
@eh7778 жыл бұрын
IMHO I think they should have kept Kai Tak open for general aviation operationos, even using only a part of the former ramp area and also about 1800 - 2000 meters of the runway. Hong Kong is one of the most important financial centers in the world, so I think that businessmen and other VIP's would prefer to land there instead of Chek Lap Kok.
