REST IN PEACE: ROBERT AUSTIN-MUELLER AIRPORT (OF AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA 🇺🇸) 1930-1999 Last word for Austin’s Robert Mueller Airport as it goes the way of its Chinese counterpart Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport: Goodbye Robert Mueller Austin Airport, And Thank You

Only to be followed by YET ANOTHER ONE of the SADDEST MOMENTS in aviation history ten months later, >5,000 miles away, east across the Pacific Ocean, 1/2 way between the US West and East Coasts, about 100 💯 miles inland to the northwest of the Gulf of Mexico, in Central Texas, when the city of Austin, Texas, sadly follows the lead of Hong Kong with its own airport, closing Robert Mueller Municipal Airport (Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport’s U.S. counterpart!) forever, and opening Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport’s U.S. counterpart!) in its place, just as Hong Kong opened the larger Chek Lap Kok International Airport on its own island made entirely out of reclaimed land, to replace Kai Tak Airport on the night of July 6-7, 1998. Rip 🪦 Robert Austin-Mueller Municipal Airport of Austin, Texas 1930-1999 :(

Sadly, I’ve never been to Hong Kong myself, and sadly never got the chance to step afoot in Kai Tak Airport, and now heartbreakingly never, EVER will be able to step afoot in Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport. ☹️😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔 I DEEPLY FEEL (AND SHARE!) YOUR ANGUISH AND AGONY AT THE CLOSURE OF A BELOVED FAMILAR AIRPORT- I EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING, TOO- ONLY IN AUSTIN, TEXAS! THE TEARS 😭 START TO ROLL EASILY, MY 👀 GET PUFFY AND SWOLLEN WITH TEARS 😭, AND I CRY OUT MY TEARS 😭 AT THIS!!

I remember as a early teenage boy flying into Kai Tak in summer 1976 to see my parents (my father worked there as civil servants for Her Majesty's government's MOD until 1979). I got scared when I though the plane was going to crash into some flats because I hadn't realise the runway was out into the sea and even when the plane landed, I was still scared when I thought it was going to crash into the sea! Good memory and Goodbye Kai Tak - I wonder what happened to it now?

Nothing happen, those plane actually have to leave the airport first, there would be no remaining aircarft their, maybe the wreckage of the 747 of china airlines still there or already move to some where else, but it should not have any aircraft their when it close, those plane have to go away first, then the airport can close down.

@Amar7605 What annoys me is that they have the balls to answer it as well. If I forget to turn off my phone or put it on silent in a meeting or in the movies and it rings I immediately reject the call. But in HK people answer the call any ways.

@fea168 Not to be racist, but this is the unfortunate Asian mentality. Unless it's religious, symbolism and respect for moments like this mean nothing. Kai Tak was a primary economic driver that helped Hong Kong be what it is today, not to mention the unherrald prosperity HK and her people enjoy. But the classless mentality that many Asian people have, where they think that they are above all on the world, showed with those cell phone rings. Sad. Just sad. BTW - I'm Indian, it's similar.
