A tiny hat with feathers is almost a fascinator! Aptly named. In the EU (or at least the swedish air company) the luggage rules are fairly strict. The checked baggage is i think a max of 25kg per suitcase. The carryon cannot be bigger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm and weigh at most 8kg.. and the personal item cannot be bigger than a single laptop bag. Only the carryon and the personal item are allowed in the cabin. Dimension AND weight restrictions are very real and I'm so sorry you weren't informed of them ahead of time properly.
@namikosugans5 жыл бұрын
Those dimensions seem pretty standard compared to American restrictions, though, and what Noelle was later told is smaller than what the airlines will actually allow, international flight or not. If it was one of those commuter or puddlejumper planes I would definitely understand the smaller allowances, but then still the guide needed to make it all clear up front. The lack of attention to detail is troubling.

The European luggage allowance is a lot less than what you get in the USA. Check with a European airline for just what you can take. I always use a large computer backpack for cabin baggage and take a large suitcase and have no problems. If you can get down to Greenwich, I could join you for afternoon tea at the Fan Museum. Catching up as I was on a work trip and then vacation for most of these when they were new. You have probably already done your Global Entry interview and been fingerprinted and all that. YES it is TOTALLY worth it! Once you put in your known traveler number to your airline of choice (its part of your profile) you get pre-check EVERY time (as long as the pre-check line is open at the airport). No matter where you are traveling, international or domestic! And while you have to pay attention to find the Global Entry lines when you return, its usually super fast and they just take your printout as you leave. As long as you have nothing to declare, your one hold up would be baggage claim for your checked bag. (Global Entry kiosks take your photo and read your fingerprints and give you a printout. It takes about two minutes or less).

Totally agree on your sentiment regarding everyone's costume deserves praise! Everyone who goes to events like that put in a ton of effort and passion. Esp. beginners will probably alr feel a little self-conscious about presenting their costume next to the costumes of very experienced makers and will be so happy about compliments for their work. The changes in the trip would have made me really mad as well. These kind of changes so shortly beforehand just suck and should have come with a huge apology and maybe even a reduction in price. The hat turned out so cute! I love it!

You may already know this but just in case. Before you place a brooch or a pin on to your garments check the point on the pin for imperfections. I do this using a pair stockings or a woolen square of knitted fabric. If necessary, you can hone the point using a whet stone. Once it is done or if it shows no signs of snagging, then simply dip the tip in a bar of soap. I always kept the old Ivory soaps when they got to small to reasonably use and made them into larger bars but also as is for hand sewing. Be careful because the pin tip will be very sharp pass through quickly. I also use this on machine needles whenever I realize I didn't buy any more of needles to replace the ones I have already used except the one in machine.

Hi Noelle, no idea if this would be helpful for your Europe trip, but there is a product called curl formers. They are basically flat tubes that you put in your hair to create curls, you can even sleep in them! I know straight hair can be a bitch to set a curl in and actually get it to stay in, but I figured I'd mention it and you can suss out if they would be suitable or not. (There's videos about people trying them etc here on YT) As for doing your own costuming trip, you could come to Australia! It's winter here atm so it's not hot and perfect for wearing layered dresses and costumes. During June, July and August there's a bunch of events that are local to me in Brisbane that you could attend in costume. There's a medieval festival which includes banquets, tournament and knighting ceremony. There's pop culture conventions and even a literal castle that you can tour! One of the local museum's does A Day at Pemberly regency high tea, but it's later in the year.

Your finished costume is awe inspiring! I love it. You are so much more well traveled than I. You well know how to navigate the waters of packing. Have you considered asking the concierge of the hotel you base from to solve your luggage problem? She usually has vast experience with fashion and photography people who have an extensive array of required trunks. I have so often found the concierge to be filled with delight (real or professional - it matters not) to solve my nagging problem. It has worked best for me when I just present the problem - and refrain from any of my suggestions. She is employed as a wizard and gains professional satisfaction from creating magic. Just a thought. Enjoy your Costume College time. Thank you for sharing.

Your plan for the using the spencer to convert the regency from evening (cap sleeve) to day is great, but an alternate suggestion: I've seen patterns and original garments where one can button a detachable long sleeve under the cap sleeve, which would give you another day look in addition to the spencer. Onstage, I've used long-sleeve blouses under a cap sleeve (which ends up looking like a chemisette + undersleeve) to convert evening to day, though I don't think it's absolutely historical? I've seen sleeveless period "jumper" dresses worn over a blouse, but I don't believe I've seen an actual period depiction of a short-sleeved gown over a blouse.

Have you considered FedExing your luggage? They will deliver your bag to your hotel so it is there when you get there. Of course you need to make arrangements with the hotel to make sure they will accept it. I know several people who do that on every trip as they have experienced lost luggage. Then you can have the luggage FedEx'd back if you need to.
