There is no Erik. He's never called that in the musical or the sequel he's just "the Phantom". It's intentionally done to keep him mysterious. Surely if they wanted people calling him Erik they would have called him "mister E" in the sequel instead of "mister y" which sounds significantly less like mystery. It's an intentional choice. he's The Phantom.

I feel Hugh's performance here is lacking some of the power of his previous performances. Perhaps he is just exhausted and feeling the need for that vacation. I am not saying this performance is bad, for it is top notch above quite a few Phantoms. It is just lacking the power and intensity of many of his other performances.
