“Nai Nai and Wai Po” is pronounced as “Why Po”. It was directed by Sean Wang who just released a movie on Sundance “Didi” that got a lot of buzz! Hope that one wins!

It did catch my attention that in “Nai” they did do the “eye” sound, but then in Wai they switched it to “ey”. I figured both had the “eye” sound, since it’s a foreign language. Thanks for rhetorical clarification.

So Brian loves Across the Spider-Verse, and Cody loves The Boy and the Heron -- and I love both. The problem with choosing them that they are so completely, utterly different in intention and experience, and I love each movie for what it is -- one a non-stop actioner with both a heart and a brain, the other a bittersweet coming-of-age tone poem with the most gorgeous musical score I've heard all year. Whichever one ends up winning, a part of me will feel a little sad that the other one had to lose.

I’ve seen all the live action short films so far. As much as I’m predicting The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar to win. The most impactful and best one I’ve seen of the 5 short films is Red White and Blue. That one for me was the more relevant and emotionally effective of the five.

The biggest roadblock to The Boy and the Heron's success is that it's a PG-13 anime. The Oscars always tends to go with more family-friendly affair, the greatest advantage that spider verse has. They could actually pull a Toy Story 4 and give it to spider verse. The boy and heron is a film like princess mononoke, a PG-13 film that herron is being compared to alongside Spirited Away. It's going to be difficult for herron to win considering it wasn't nominated for an ACE Eddie award, which is crucial to the Oscar win. On top of that, they have their own awards.

Wreck it Ralph lost the Oscar only because it wasn’t nominated at BAFTA. All Best Animated Feature Oscar winners are at least nominated at BAFTA. Spiderverse was nominated at BAFTA. Brave won the Oscar because it won ACE Eddie Award for Best Animated Feature. The winners of ACE Eddie Award wins the Oscar. Spiderverse will win that considering The Boy and the Heron is not nominated at ACE.

@@laurajones1773 There is another important rule; If an animated feature wins BAFTA and lose Annie, it never lose Oscar (Happy Feet, Toy Story 3 and 4, WALL･E, Brave, Encanto) At least one of these 2 rules definitely breaks this year.

I don't think Spidey is going to win the Oscar since the Academy already gave the first one the win and they traditionally don't reward animated sequels: Think of Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Despicable Me 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 3, Cars 2 and 3 (not even nominated), The Incredibles 2, Frozen 2 (not even nominated), Finding Dory (not even nominated), Puss In Boots The Last Wish, Ralph Breaks The Internet. Despite all the glitz and glam and whiz-bang colors of Spidey, The Boy And The Heron was much more substantial.

idk, a lot of these sequels aren’t even that good, and in those years, there was usually a movie that was leagues better that just so happened to be an original film. and in cases like shrek 2, that was going up against the incredibles, the alleged “best pixar film ever," according to many people, especially at the time. across the spiderverse is a case where it’s a sequel that actually lives up to the hype of the original and exceeds it tenfold (and is much, *much* more substantial than boy and the heron, don’t even go there 🤣🤣 (imho))

True. The Academy snubbed Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for score last year. Considering Spiderverse is a superhero film, the Academy snubbed a different superhero film The Batman last year.

Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse has Critics Choice, Annie, PGA, and was included in the AFIs Top Ten Movies of the Year (not an easy list to crack especially for animated films). The Boy and the Heron has Golden Globes and BAFTA...and is not a sequel (which seems to be frowned upon). I may be missing another award here. 🤔 I think I'm going with Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. But, I'm not confident 😕

I definitely think Anderson should win for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. In my opinion he should’ve won about 9 years ago for The Grand Budapest Hotel (suck it Iñárritu! I’m sorry that was mean), and Asteroid City should’ve been nominated for something this year, but meh. I also don’t think it was the best of those shorts but I can see why it got the nomination over my favourite (The Swan) because it kind of seems to represent all four of them, and it’s the longest.

I aven't seen the other 3 nominees in the Best Documentary feature, but Four Daughters is one of the best films of the year, and so, so much better than 20 Days in Mariupol. I don't think the format of the latter with the voicever works that well. But it will win anyway over the superior movie because it's about the war in Ukraine. There's just no way that the Academy will instead give the Oscar to a movie about the experience of Muslim women.

Pulling for Letter to a Pig for animated short…95 Senses was truly one of my least favorite, did not buy the “cuteness” of the story at all. Could’ve been way better with some simple script changes. War is over would be okay, but pachyderme and our uniform are better imo

Plus Emma was also in that show plus she has won an Oscar before. If I am the voter I would pick Sandra Huller for something fiery like Elizabeth Taylor and something bottled emotions burst out like Meryl Streep and Sandra speaks foreign languages on the show Meryl Streep in Sophi's Choice. Dandra',s character also has many layers like Meryl and Elizabeth and it slowly gets peeled as the show progresses.
