“Sorry. We’re closed.” On one hand, a throwaway line. On the other hand, a brilliant and simple way to end a show about a bar, especially one that went on for eleven years. And not only do we see Sam walk out the same way we first saw him walk in back in 1982, but the lovely tribute to Coach just as he steps out forever is icing on the cake. Finales don’t get much better than this.

Writer Ken Levine said this: "That final customer was agent Bob Broder. He represented the Charles Brothers, Jimmy Burrows, and more importantly, me and my partner. Bob was instrumental in getting the show on the air and keeping it on the air. Also, he was (and still is) the best agent we ever had." I also think that last customer represented us (the viewers), and "Sorry, we're closed" was Cheers saying goodbye to its fanbase.

I graduated High School in 1993. When this aired, it was more than a finale to an iconic show. For me, it represented an end to my childhood. Growing up in the 80s and into the early 90s, Cheers was a part of why I liked NBC on Thursdays as a kid. For many years, you led off with The Cosby Show followed by Family Ties. Then Cheers was next followed by Night Court. At the time of this airing in 1993, Family Ties was long gone in 1989 when Alex Keaton had moved onto the business world. The year before, Night Court and Cosby had their last episodes. Cheers was it. My HS graduation was nearing when this aired and everything started to get real.

NBC was tough to top there for a while. Also, you left out Hill Street Blues then LA Law which rounded out Must See Thursday. After Cheers left you had Mad About You, Wings, Seinfeld, Frasier, LA Law. This went on until 1994-95 when Friends started then ER took over the LA Law. Funny how Kelsey Grammer played the same character on 2 different very funny and well done shows for over 20 years. He also made an appearance on Wings(I'm still in love with Crystal Bernard to this day).

Sadly, at the height of his fame, he died from a heart ailment at his home on February 12th, 1985. Much beloved by the cast, the picture of the Apache warrior Geronimo that Colasanto had kept in his dressing room as a good luck charm was hung on the wall of the primary set of Cheers (1982). The picture of was not only a tribute to "Nicky", as he was known to his friends and co-workers, but was a reminder that "Coach" was still around. On the final episode of Cheers (1982), eight years after his death, Nicky Colasanto was acknowledged when series star Ted Danson, in the final scene, straightens the Geronimo picture before walking off stage for the last time.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Jon C. Another tribute to Colasanto in this scene is Norm touching the lock on the front door. As Nicolas Colasanto constantly had problems remembering his lines, he often wrote them down in many places on the set. One of places he did was on the slat of the door right next to the lock. By the time of this episode, the door was repainted and Colasanto's line was deleted, which led to some cast members to threaten to quit, but cast members kept honoring him by touching that very spot on the door. Norm turned out to be the last person to do it in the series.

Poor Sam. After turning away the most challenging and passionate relationship in his life, he was content with his empty bar and that was his one true love. That’s a testament to the exquisitely precise and brilliant writing, and of course the absolutely perfect cast. They made it look so easy, didn’t they? This was basically a one-set show. To pull off that much history, over the many years, and keep it engaging, is astonishing. That shot, from the viewpoint of the customer “looking in” to the bar? I don’t remember ever seeing that shot during the show’s run. Am I mistaken? Sam fixing the picture that the beloved Coach/Nicky had in his dressing room as a tip of the hat to another beloved cast member, long gone? What a way to go out. I remember watching this last episode of Cheers on NBC in 1993. It got a huge audience. Something insane like 90 million viewers which is unheard of today except for the Super Bowl. Then later that night the cast got drunk on a LIVE version of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. 🤣

the serie Frasier NO WHERE near matches the sitcom Cheers, Frasier was probably the best character after Sam Malone in Cheers though, but in his own sitcom / spin-off he wasn't nearly as funny Personally, i kinda hated / very much disliked his show, but thats my experience

Aaaargh!!! Why do we as a society overanalyze everything? "Why didn't Sam turn out the lights"? "Why did he walk to the back room?" "Did he get shot back there?" Why not just accept it for what it is...a fitting final minute of a great TV series. The frame adjustment was a perfect tribute to Coach, but I'm sure there were many other bits in that last episode that only those with the show would understand. I recently have gotten hooked on "Becker" reruns & wishing I watched it when it was in its original run, but the final episode also had a classy end. Ted Danson definitely was the perfect guy to be Sam Malone & Dr. John Becker. A great actor & leading man.

I remember watching this live, as did MILLIONS of fans of the show. Cheers was one of those shows that was great in all of its writing, it's characters, it's episodes etc. It didn't divide people, didn't dump out woke politics like now, it was just comedy at its finest.
@songbirdy Жыл бұрын
It was taped live before a studio audience. We didn't watch it live from our living rooms but still, they had to know their shit to get it good and right in a relatively short amount of time.

The very first scene and the very last scene, 11 years apart, are exactly the same except for Sam walking in different directions after he straightens a picture on the wall. Never think that wasn't intentional. 30 years later, Cheers remains one of television's best efforts. "Cheers" to Cheers.

@12345682900 Жыл бұрын
@@Amp661 Technically, I suppose, that is true but the very first "paying customers" we see are Diane Chambers (Shelly Long) and her fiancée Sumner Sloan (Michael McGuire) although their champagne was not paid for either, compliments of Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Now when you consider that Norm (George Wendt) never really paid for drinks either, the question now becomes: So, who was the first customer to actually pay for a drink? 🤔🤔🤔

There used to be a bar in the neighborhood where I grew up that was like this. My dad coached the taverns softball team when I was younger. Every Friday was boys night out with me, my brother, and my father. We would go to the bar prior to seeing a movie, and all of his friends would give us quarters for the pinball and bowling machines while he had a drink or two. Reminded me of cheers a lot.

I loved this show so much growing up that I bought the whole series to enjoy at night with a drink before bed. So comforting and funny not like the garbage produced today. Perhaps I view it like that because it brings back an awesome time in my life when the world was sane. The funny part is the final dvd skipped all over the final scene so it was unwatchable 😂. Pissed me off. The eighties were the best. Peace to all you lovely people.

Two & A Half Men ended after 12 seasons (though a shell of its former self, of course) & Big Bang Theory will also wrap up after 12. Ozzie & Harriet lasted 14, but that was from a time when not only were shows not always with a narrative throughline, but series finales were not MUST-SEE EVENTS yet. M*A*S*H changed all that. But depending on how much the viewers have taken a show to their hearts, the finale at anytime can be meaningful & bittersweet.

@@ericandy88 True, but Two and a Half and Big Bang can't hold a candle to Cheers. Very average sitcoms. But, nowadays, an average sitcom seems much better because of the below average crap around it.

As a young adult, the romantic in me was disappointed that Sam and Diane did not permanently reunite in the last episode. As an older adult, the realist in me understands that they could never have been a long term couple. They were just too different. Opposites attract, but sharing the same values is the recipe for an enduring relationship. And those two did not share the same values.
