Man you can be proud of that Brain Tanned Hide ... That's a whole bunch of work right there, and if you have never done it cant be grasped ! Excellent final material.

I really enjoyed your hide videos. You put a lot of work into your hides. I am also learning how to do hides and I am always fascinated at all the different ways people do hides. Just finishing up my second moose hide. Great job!!

Thank you so much! I have a third one I am slowly working on but haven't filmed it much, it is a very repetitive and time consuming process ! :)

Very pretty colour. I'd call that piece of hide a success. No one can say you aren't dedicated. You cut up all your good jeans and were down to your jammers in order to smoke the skin! Was there an odour, besides the spruce smoke, to the hide as it smoked? Thanks for the video. Congrats on the success of your hard work.
@NomadicWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
Hahahhaa yup had to do it in the jammers, way more comfortable. I got the jeans in second hand store, good score. Denim is supposed to be 18 oz. per yard, so pretty thick considering my tent is 10 oz. cotton and prety thick too. Worked nicely for the smoking ! Thank you for watching i hope the dogs don't miss winter too much yet ! Cheers, Steve

No odour after the 3 soakings in the soap. Smells pretty much nothing but now it smells like tons of smoke lol.

You have enough leather to make a jacket, even with fringes along the sleeves. You can be really proud of yourself!

@@NomadicWoodsman Your best bet is getting something that fits you well from Frenchys or salvation army .... Then open up the seams and you have a pattern.

Do you know if I hide needs to be smoked or preserved in order to make it into a drum?
@NomadicWoodsman Жыл бұрын
I do not know sorry. I believe a drum is made from a raw hide, not tanned. It would not hurt to lightly smoke the hide just to repel insects I would think. I never made a drum though !

Hey Steve , do your neighbors think your weird? Mine too. We should start a club. Love that color. I'm going to get some spruce for my next smoking. I wished I'd seen this before I did my deer hides. I smoked them to long. Left them out for two weeks and they still smell of smoke. Awesome job. That looks like a great piece of leather.
@NomadicWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, what did you use for wood to smoke the deer hides ? How long did you smoke them ? I want to experiment different woods as well, but very happy with the spruce result ! :)

@@NomadicWoodsman I used rotten elm. I found a stump behind my barn that was sticking out of the snow. It work well but I wasn't sure how long to go for and I went 5-6 hours one side and a little less on the other. They look cool , dark , but I was thinking of making a bow hunting shirt. The beautiful color of your hide would be suicidal to hunt in. I aired them for a month and they still reek!
@timothylongmore73253 жыл бұрын
@@NomadicWoodsman I'm definately going to get some spruce to do my next hides. Still trying to figure out cowhide tanning. That's why I'm interested in moose hide tanning. Close analog for cowhides. We don't have moose hunting ..yet. About 5 years ago my next door neighbor had a young bull hanging out with his heifers. He was quite the celebrity for about a month. I think I'd probably take one if I ran across one deer hunting. Hey I made a couple canoe stems. I filmed most of the process so far. I'm going to add some head boards still then edit it and put it up. they turned out pretty cool.
@NomadicWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
@@timothylongmore7325Awesome for the stemp pieces i am looking forward to seeing it ! I do think cow hides would be similar to moose hides for sure. I never thought of the colour for hunting but with the sand and beige colour it does look like a deer fur for sure... I think it will smell smoke for years to come but will be more tolerable after maybe 6 months of airing out lol
@timothylongmore73253 жыл бұрын
@@NomadicWoodsman yeah i saw a vid were the guy said you could wash them after smoking. I also saw on the gator hunting show the indians would smug themselves before hog hunting to mask the scent? The trick with hunting that's always served me well is wind direction. It's probably the single most important thing to remember. The color of your hide is like a whitetails summer coat. Definatley don't want to be afield wearing that color.
