Matthew, that was such a fun video. The bubble bath scene was hilarious. As always lovely to see both Penny and Sheba. I remember your van builds. It was a giant tinker toy set...this wall needs this side wall, which needs this bracket and LOTS of construction adhesive. It has served you well, and you have so many wonderful memories in building the first time. NOW with 28 months under your belt, you know what you want to try next. I can imagine it's scary and delightful simultaneously. Our brains function very much the same, SQUIRREL, sorry, I just got distracted.

Possible thought for the under bed drawer idea. Instead of 1 full length drawer, opening to the back of the van, you could put 2 drawers, 1 facing into the van and 1 facing to the rear, each half the depth. That way you could have some access to half of the storage space from inside the van and keep garage or seasonal items for the rear facing half.

I thought about van life but it wasn't for me manly because i refused to give up certain things , so i bought a new small camper that i could pull, the amount of outside storage is a great help leaving the inside storage spaces for things i use daily, having space for your different needs makes it more like a tiny home! No Regrets.

I know the work is probably done but...lol..just an idea if I don't throw it out there I won't be able to sleep😂 Remove all the wheel well material to sink, flip sink cabinet to put diesel where sink drain is. Build storage ben with finger holes to open on top of wheel well. Top will be 3/4 below current bed level. Put 22" 3/4 plywood on the wall, when lowered(when Brooklyn is with), sits on storage ben even with existing bed. Drawers, as you suggested under bed but split in half so the front half you can get from inside the van and seasonal from the back. Ok. I can sleep now😂 I know what ever you configure will be great. Thanks for sharing, very enjoyable.

Listening to you, I'm thinking, put the heater on a slide that locks into place. I'm also thinking in your place I'd have to take out anything more or less portable, like the plastic drawers, the orange drawers + contents (not the cabinet, just the drawers,) clothes, etc., that hang from the walls. I'd be much better able to visualize space and figure out what needs to go where.
@melisa82569 ай бұрын
That’s what I’d do as well. In fact I’m even crazier cause I’d make a tape outline the dimensions of the space. Then I would “place” everything there before I mounted or built anything in the van.

Tip: egg carton or ice cube tray in tool draws to hold screws,nuts,bolts. Or itty zip bags. I’m an excellent organizer. Ps…did you get my note on…Vinegar being awesome window cleaner? I love egg salad on toasted lightly buttered English muffin. Mmm. You haven’t been making toast in awhile. I peel my eggs under water. Either running slowly faucet, or in a water- bowl. Fresher the egg, less the sticky membrane to shell. Plus, unwashed fresh eggs have protective coating, they can last for months, if stored correctly. Can Google it. Martha Stewart uses her own fresh eggs, and adds vinegar to the boiling water and she never has peeling issues. I’ve tried it on store bought and it doesn’t always work out. Back in my younger years, I never had peeking issues with store bought white washed eggs. It’s a bit unnerving to think what they do nowadays too then that fug it up!?! 😮

If you go with the long drawer under the bed idea, you could do a 2 drawers system. One small drawer that open inside the cab for the most used stuff and another longer one that open from the outside, for the stuff that doesn't get used often. Plus, it would make it easier to source the longer sliders 🤔.
@mattca3539 ай бұрын

Exciting to see this happening! To be honest such a wide bed seems like a waste of space for your everyday living. By expanding to the wall and not shortening the length towards the front of the van you're going to end up with a massive bed and less shelf space/less readily available access to the wheel well box. Given that the benefit (more space for Brooklyn) is 1% of the time it doesn't seem to make sense, ideally some kind of slide out or convertable seating would have probably been better for her. That said I'm sure that the build is probably nearly done, or at least past this point, and I'm excited to see what you make of it!

Hi Matthew, just a thought why don't you only take the width of the bed to the wheel well box, and if the wheel well box has some depth take the top off, put a full length shelf inside and hinge the top then use the space for storage. Extend the wheel well box as a separate section to the rear of the van and make a hinged lid for more storage. Cheers Andy North Wales, UK.

What about splitting the under bed pull-out into two separate pull-outs? One that slides out from the rear and one that pulls out into the interior? It seems that might reduce the weight of the pull-out, which is always a concern, and allow you access to some stored items without having to go outside. Just a thought.
@naomidonovan-perry26679 ай бұрын
Why have such a large bed. Realign your 48 by 70 across the back and configure a set up for the times Brooklynne joins you to actually sleep in the van. Normally you would not need it in place and you have that workable floor space available to you for day to day use.

If you're intending on keeping at least the right side cabinets, you might want to make that the fixed side of the new bed. Then you can fold over from the left, even if the fold is off-centre. It might be anyways if you go for the under-bed sliding storage. Heck, you might even be able to turn your existing mattress sideways even if you need to get a little bit shaved off. Who knows! Good luck with the build eh.
@wildtravelinglinda68919 ай бұрын
You should remove everything on that side of the cabinets. Take one board from the bed and build cabinets all the way across from front to back. Then you won't need the plastic cubbies and you'll have alot of storage. It will look nice too!

Full size bed is 54x75" (W x L) and queen is 60x80" so if you can match one of those it's save you having to get special bed/ sheets made etc. A Full XL is 54x80". Don't know if you can stand the extra length but since you are taller it might be worth it to you.
@michaelcummings72469 ай бұрын
Just another idea might try double twins beds which are 38"x75" which gives you 76" so should fit side by side or top/bottom and still be easy to move around for access.

10:46 mark: I agree that anything not used in 6 months shouldn't be in the rig (unless it's there for emergency purposes--like fire extinguishers, tools, and such). However, if you're like me, you might need a storage unit for overflow that you know you only need to access a couple times a year. That's my strategy. I can't afford to continually buy the things I want/need to store. It would cost more than the storage unit costs if I had to buy those items any and every time I needed them. And besides that, some things I want to store are irreplaceable. As much as I dislike the thought of that monthly bill, I will just have to deal with it until I'm able to obtain a secure home base somewhere down the line. 🤷♀ Good luck(y) with the remodeling! It looks exciting! 🍀🙂

Hi Matthew, Penny and Brooklyn! Well this was my granddaughter Maggie's birthday trip. We took her to Hershey's chocolate World. In Pennsylvania . We live in Western NY. We went on the tour to see the whole process of how chocolate is made. Maggie was in heaven seeing all that candy. Then we went on to Ocean City Maryland. We stayed in the hotel on the beach for two nights. We surprised her with birthday gifts and birthday cake pancakes. Then we went to the Fractured Prune which is a donut house where they cook your donuts to order with your choice of frosting and toppings. So we had a hot donut and went shopping. After that we decided to go on the boardwalk and stopped in an arcade where we won her a huge stuffed kitty and a smaller purple llama as well as other small toys. We walked all the way to the end of the boardwalk and back. We went back to the hotel and Sarah and Maggie went down to the beach to play in the sand. It was really cold but not crowded as it's the off season. Once they got back to the room, they went down to the pool for a while. We ordered dinner in , and settled in for the night. When we woke up on Monday, it was baby girls fifth birthday!! I got her an instant camera that prints the pictures right then. So we put all the pictures she took into a scrapbook. It is hysterical the things a five year old finds important enough to take a picture of. My favorites were the plug in the wall behind the headboard, the vent over the table, the bathroom door, the roof over the pool, two strange men sitting on a bench and my favorite was of my cat's butt.😅😅😅 She had so much fun and kept saying, I went on vacation and was four, I go home from vacation and I'm FIVE!! The girls went to the pool on the first day and she even made friends to play with. It was quite an adventure. While we were shopping , I found some stickers for you, Brooklyn and Amber because each one reminded me of you. Then I saw today's video and you're tearing out the interior of the van. It made me glad that I haven't sent them out your way yet. Now you will have some starter stickers to place once you have rebuilt. Now that I have talked your ear off, thanks for encouraging me to get out there and have an adventure. We had a great experience.

I would like to make a suggestion that I think could help out a lot financially. It would be up to you to figure out how to actually make it happen. I think you're spending a lot of money on motels and things that I think that you could stop spending on. Your daughter could stay in the van with you and perhaps sleep in some kind of a hammock type system if she is able. Or you could make a makeshift mattress bed for her that could tuck away when she's not with you overnight. Perhaps even going sideways on top of the seats with a support underneath in the middle of the seats? This is a golden opportunity to make something like this happen. I wanted to say to you how great of a Dad that you are to her and how lucky she is to have you as her Dad!!! 😃 I sent this before I finished watching the video. I should have waited...lol

I am doing the same thing bud, I think I'll do this, then, no, I better do this - i keep changing my mind - and I have to made decisions. :-) I have to laugh, sounds just like me! My mind gets too busy. Just have fun making it like you want and make all things accessible. :-) Keep on keepin' on!
