This instructional video is the bollocks and you are a legend. What a great find and simple way of using Garmin. No more messing around with Basecamp for me. I can now carry on using TomTom for planning and import my routes as GPX to my Zumo. Thanks for this and if I ever bump in to you, I owe you a pint.

Thank god you have came up on my KZbin feed. Just recently bought the Zumo XT. Didn’t think it could be that complicated to make and follow a route. Lots of conflicting information about how to do it. Was just about to give up until I seen your vid. I’ve watched a few times and pieced it all tougher. Thanks my friend.

Well done and thanks for sharing.It's taking me awhile to learn how to drive mine and I can see I'm not on my own with trying to learn how to drive it.I also changed my mount to handlebars(I have a CB500X)nice and firm now,especially on my dirt road adventures here in Australia and also better position for touching screen.Did my research before I coughed up the big bucks for it,worth the money.A lot of my friends use phones,but I am often in areas with no reception so the Garmin better.Don't know if you ever use the back track function but I love it as when someone takes us on a ride,can then save to do again so easily.Cheers from down under.

Can't see how this is any quicker/ easier than simply creating a route in Basecamp and sending it to the unit. As long as Recalculation is switched off you get exactly what you planned. No converting or messing about with a phone.

@psrfpsrf

@@Boudi-xy9by Problem, a lot of actual Garmin devices cannot work with Explore. And by the way there are also lot of concerns with the usability of Explore (i am also not so exited). Me, I work very often with MyRoutes (ex Tyre) which allow direct transfer to Garmin Navis too. Disadvantage of Tyre you have to pay a yearly fee, or what I got sommetimes take the offer to pay for a lifetime account (about a 3 years fee at once). A big advantage in addition of MyRoute. NyRoute has several Map Layouts for plannng and one of them is the Michelin Map layout whith the green marked roads of a beautiful landscape.

I moved to the XT from a zumo 595 and there was still a big learning curve. Do yourself a favour and look at the Explore functionality. Again it needs learning but is really useful. I use it to paint a track on the map and then at the same time you can have a route/trip running. That means should you have to divert (Road closures, etc) you still see the original track as well as routing around the problem. Many of these Garmin things are easier to show than explain!! Oh and I never use Basecamp, it's horrid. Calimoto for random routes but mainly Myrouteapp 👍

Spot on thanks, I've just spent last night learning how to do this with basecamp but this looks so much easier. It may be that the Basecamp method gives a bit more control over how many via points / shaping points are employed but it may be that the Zumo does it well enough anyway. Again, many thanks for this, the voice of reason at last.

Paper maps are amazing. One issue I have with maps like google is that when you expand or minimize in a a local area, the street names come and go, and you can so easily get lost and frustrated as you don't get 'context' of where things are 'exactly' as you're zooming and scanning.

Perfectly timed. I scrapped the BMW Nav VI for the Zumo XT and while the interface is beautiful the file transferring BS between laptop (Basecamp - Which in and of itself requires a PhD), Garmin Drive and the Zumo almost gave me a nervous breakdown. And trying to plan a detailed route in trip planner is tedious given all the waypoints you need to make it go where you want it to. I've just tested this technique on some GPX files I had saved and sure enough the quick Tracks to Trips tip totally worked! My God Man!

Been doing this for years with garmin sat navs. The only tips I can offer is use my route app. I don’t use pc based software, I always use the app on my phone. It allows me to plan day by day on the fly. It has the option to use garmens here mapping software. That means there is no confusion in the route. They are exactly the same maps. That’s only issue I have had. Rides can get confused using Tom Tom, Google etc generated gpx files. The other thing is, remember to turn off auto re-route. If you take a wrong turn, it will bypass potentially large portions of your route. I always set mine to ask if I want to recalculate the route.
@RichyVida
@RichyVida 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, thanks Henry. I have mine set to off, so it can’t re-route. 👍

I also use Myrouteapp, brilliant software, they've recently lost the license to use Google maps but that doesn't bother me at all, I use the Michelin map, this goes hand in hand with my michelin paper maps that I use to plan my routes .. so they look exactly the same as what's on the screen .... brilliant 👏

Thanks for the vid. About the mount, I went back to the garmin own handlebar mount. Also the screws fit most bikes already existing mirror and butten cluster mount, so can just put it on there if it's tight or you just don't want to use the clamp provided. It's better than center mount for a couple of reasons, your eyes don't have to travel as far from the road and it is way closer, only a few inches from your handle, so no reason to fiddle with other mounts, really.
@RichyVida
@RichyVida Жыл бұрын
What about full lock? Does it not catch the screen?
@philiplaurell1163
@philiplaurell1163 Жыл бұрын
@@RichyVida Well, the mount is swivel ball and a stem, and the Garmin sits a few centimeters in, towards the rider, it doesn't even come near the screen. In fact I could have it much more forward, it's just I prefer it this way, it is very near my left hand, so very convenient that way too, the responsiveness if I quickly have to grab the handle with both hands is superfast with the garmin in this position.

IT CAN DO EVEN BETTER! :-) I use the same method as you to transfer the files to the XT, but let's say it is a route that you want to follow 100%. Like TET or something. After converting to a route, the Zumo will recalculate to the next waypoint if you happen to miss an exit. If that happens, you can miss out on parts of the trip that you wanted to enjoy. What I do in addition to what you have done, is to add the first, original track as a fixed layer on top of the map. It will then appear as a red (or whatever color you choose) line on the map that doesn't change regardless of where you drive. Now, if you open your route on top of that, like you have done, you will instantly see if the route Zumo made deviates from your original track! :-)
@RichyVida

Yes that’s exactly what I do. Always have the track showing underneath. That way, you can choose to - or not to - follow a diversion etc 👍

Great vid Richy, often wonder why manufacturers make instructions so confusing. Look how many vids are on YT with people explaining stuff in layman’s terms. Calimoto routing is so much better than Basecamp. I’ve a BMW Nav 6 which you can’t send routes to as you can on the XT but a few bits of the vid may point me in the right direction to using cali on my gps with a bit more ease. Oh yeah, currently waiting to go for breakfast at Hotel Infantado. 😁

Hi Richy I use the same method for sending routes to my XT Via my route app. I send the file as a gpx 1.1 When the XT receives the track and converts into a route it will show the start and finish waypoints/ shaping points/ and via points, it is essential to have the via points because if you need to divert off the route the sat NAV will make its own mind up to how it gets to the next waypoint (end of route) once in the device you can also change shaping points into via points and vice versa, plus with via points it will tell you how far to the next one for example coffee stop / view point. As a rule of thumb I divide the miles by 5 for shaping point, and then divide the shaping points by 10 or thereabouts to create the via points. 👍

I put routes in my XT manually using Google earth Lat Long positions you get a much wider view on google earth than Basecamp as a lot of the minor roads only become visible when your nearly fully zoomed in.

If you plan a route on a PC and then add it to your Garmin, you may find the Garmin changes some of the route. The trick is to set your Garmin to Off Road not Faster or Shortest and it will then follow the imported route as planned.Obviously if you plan a route directly on the device you have to set it to Faster or Shortest.

12:35 - Glad you had the same niggle with the height placement and eyeline view where the xt was previously on AT, as an avid viewer, personally, it was a little distracting. Just kept thinking that's gotta obstruct your view of the road with it being that high, let alone us viewers. But top marks for thinking about your viewers views, viewing your vids!

If you make a trip in Basecamp, it will go into the Zumo without having to convert it. And you can put waypoints in between, which is not possible with a track.

Calimoto on the PC is definitely handy for plotting a ride on but I just use my old iPhone XR to display it like you suggested on the bike with my 12 pro safely in my pocket from all vibrations 😁🏍💨

Yep, that’s what I do. Use my old iPhone 8 Plus on a Quadlock mount and my new 13 Pro in my pocket. Calimoto is great for creating routes on a PC or iPad, although the latest app update on the phone isn’t as good as the old version.

Great video. Just curious. I have actually managed to somewhat master Basecamp (cold war relic software) but its a mess. My routes have many purposefully planned stops/shaping points. I see the track conversion creates start/end and a track. If you deviate, say for a road closure, does route around the detour or just recalculate a bee line to the end? Thanks in advance.
@RichyVida
@RichyVida 2 жыл бұрын
I have the recalc off, so the route won’t change. What it does is zooms out, so if you deviate, you can see on the map where to rejoin..
@derbyshireruralrider9398

Wondered if the route recalculates if you encounter a road closure. Also wanted to ask if you ever use the relive app which shows exact route you have taken and plots the movement on a satellite map, I’ve started adding them to end of videos rather than route on Google map. I’ve taken photos of the old scooter in the exact position where you ended video

i use KURVIGER instead of CALIMOTO (as i'm an android phone user) but that point remains the same and that's why always use the phone instead it allows me to more easily skip a waypoint with the road closure or if I change my mind I'm not sure the same will happen when I use my ZUMO XT which i also own I love that unit because you can see it in the brightest song which is not the same with any cell phone ever made but it has limitations may have just found something here that will be helpful for many people as long as long as there are no road closures or changes to your route while riding fascinating find appreciate you sharing glad you didn't RUIN the unit with that VIBRATION it's expensive and they say it's "VIBRATION PROOF," but i really don't want to PERSONALLY find out if GARMIN is EXAGGERATING

Very informative vid. I bought the XT about 2 months ago and it still sits in the box it came in because of the many confusing videos on how to use Basecamp, Garmin Express, Garmin Drive etc. Really contemplating selling it. My question is, when on a bit of a tour where you can’t use a PC, how do I make detailed route each day on the XT itself, without it changing the planned route? It must be possible because Noraly does it daily.

You can plan directly on the device. Just making your waypoints as you would on the big screen. No problem

Forget basecamp... just use it's inbuilt planning on the Zumo itself and you can set it to adventurous route which is good... just not as good as a calimoto route. Thank's Richy for this... I was messing around trying to do something similar to that a year or so ago but have since pretty much just used Calimoto as it's so easy... I kept the Zumo as it has come in handy to have an offline GPS as well and it's POI database is really useful if needing to find stuff on the fly. I just didn't get the route conversion step sorted so will try that and hopefully it's all good. Does it allow to to add in other waypoints on the fly and or cope with re-routes Ok?

The XT is pretty good, but it does take some faff, I will definitely try the Trip thing, I found, and I havent tried it for a while, that I had to delete and reinstall drive for each route I tried to send it. Im still working it out with OutdoorActive. Thanks dude.

I do it all on my iPhone, using Beeline app or Scenic app - i prefer the beeline one then i export to GPX and straight into the Garmin drive app then upload to my Garmin XT Sat Nav - that way i use very easily when actually on tour and i don’t need a PC

Hey Richy, something that may be worth watching out for regarding your iPhone being locked in to the solid framework. The iPhone camera may have issues, due to it not being dampened and vibrations from the bars through the framework may affect the camera. Maybe the mounting is so solid that the iPhone camera is nicely seated and no vibrations, still maybe worth keeping an eye on it. iPhones are so god damn expensive!
@RichyVida
@RichyVida 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t have my iPhone on the bike? This is a Garmin unit. And yes, anything after the iPhone X shouldn’t really be mounted due to optical stabilisation on the camera. The vibes aren’t to do with movement of the mount, it’s the high frequency of the engine, that “buzzes” the device 👍

@RichyVida

It’ll save as a track and a route when sent from Drive. What you need to do is go into the track, and convert that to a trip. (Delete the ‘route’). Open your trip planner, and the converted track will be there.
