Finally a good use for Loewe 100Hz CRTs! Reproduction VGA cards

I've tried Dreamcast on my Loewe with this reproduction card and it is perfection. Native vga 480p on a crt is the same level of beauty as rgb 240p on a crt. Especially on a Loewe. Next level. We need to promote this option to save all the relevant 100hz Loewes as they are treasures in the making.

One thing I think you missed (I didn't watch every second of the video though) is that 100hz/120hz ruins motion clarity, because it has to frame-double 50/60fps games. So even if it kept the 240p/288p lines exactly where they were supposed to be, picture quality wouldn't' be acceptable. But yeah, this VGA card fixes all that thankfully. Very impressed with what you've done here

Great work, although you are mixing up a couple of things in your explanation. The input signal is not always line doubled, but always frame doubled. 100hz was introduced in Europe mainly to combat 50hz flicker, doubling each field of an interlaced signal. Some TVs also introduced some kind of deinterlacing to the signal chain, but some (including Grundigs and Sonys, AE2F and AE3 chassis being an example) did not. This results in a 240p image with scanlines, albeit Lightgun incompatible and suffering from motion stutter because of the frame doubling.

I’ve purchased one of these off ludo and installed it in my aconda, I can vouch for how well it works and the image quality from the Dreamcast is phenomenal. Bit of a shame light gun games don’t work well on it but still worth it

Thank you for the feedback Dylan. Sorry to hear you’re having issue with lightguns. I think it’s most likely because your model of tv uses a pure flat tube. I’ve tested the vga card with Dreamcast lightguns on multiple curved tube loewes and it always worked flawlessly

I found a Sanyo TV. My highest limit I can push the HZ is 180HZ. I used a modulator to connect my PC to the TV. Then I used a program called "Custom Resolution Utility" and made a resolution of 640x480 180HZ as second monitor. I'm pairing the 180HZ with "Lossless Scaling" for frame generation. High Fps! 👍

I picked up a Arcada 8784 ZP and a Planus 4781 ZP (with the stand) and both have the 110 Q 24 chassis. I just learned about this being a optional card. I always thought that I was out of luck living in Germany and that the perforated cutout for the VGA port is a leftover from some other international version. I hope you have 2 cards left in a month, because I used all the gaming money for this month to pick them up.

Nice to see some decent footage with closeups. I've wondered how flexible these TVs could be - they're ofc not monitors, but 31 Khz and VGA geometry adjustment already provides some options. 480p should also work for the PS3, PAL consoles need to be modded ofc.

I forgot, maybe both 480p and 576p are available by default, I definitely needed to mod my console to switch between 480i and 576i though. The Loewe should also be able to do both, 576p/i just run in 50 Hz instead of 60.

That link for the VGA card doesn't seem to work anymore, do you have another one ? I actually got into Loewe CRT's about 9 years ago before this was well known i went around buying up old TV's and taking the boards out to make a complete CRT with all the inputs. Not mentioned in this video but there is also a secret service menu you can access to give you more options. I also modded the power cable to upgrade to a beefier silver coated power cable which also dramatically improved the picture quality. Thanks for doing this, i still have the TV i modded many many years ago. It's great to see these excellent sets now being appreciated by many more people.

Great video! Question - if you don't have the right chassis for this card, would it be possible to inject RGB via the teletext processor? As an example, in the service manual for the Q2300 chassis I'm seeing it looks exactly the same on the signal board. This would obviously be way more involved, but could save some more of those 100hz sets from the dumpster.

I idę my Daewoo 100Hz for N64, PS1, PS2, GameCube and old consoles like Master System and even though it does not produce scanlines I did not notice aby lag. I got my PS2 hooked up through RGB Scart, N64 via S Video, PS1 via S Video and older consoles like Master System and SNES via composite and never had problems

Hmm looking online at manuals of my TV, the Loewe Profil 3470 is 50/60hz, making it able for me to play PAL games in that have the option in 60hz. So it's not a 100hz tv, right? I'm too lazy to look at the back of my TV right now lol

Is there any significant difference between using VGA on a set like this and using progressive through component on a 100Hz TV, like a Panasonic Tau or the like?

I have not testedTAU VGA personally,you'd have to compare side by side, I think they are exclusively flat tube though so that's a major difference. VGA@31K vs YPbPr@31K should be indistinguishable though

I've never seen official TVL ratings for the Philips Blackline S tubes, From experience comparing them side by side I'd say they're on par, if not superior to Sony cube PVMs (i.e.:PVM29-50)

Sorry Q41 is not compatible with the card. Q25M Q25H or Q24 is what you need

Is there any sense in getting a Grundig 16:9 TV with a VGA port? It is 32” but will the attached PC then have black bars on the side when it sends 640x480 or does it send more horizontal pixels then? Something like 820x480 or something? It is that Grundig you have shown in your commercial in the beginning, the Grundig M82 269/9

Do you by chance know if the xbox 360 slim can still use the VGA cable? I have the VGA cable from my original 360 which got the ring of death and then bought a slim and an 360e. Definitely not, even the component input does not accept progressive signals. That’s why the vga card is so useful

Hi, q23 is a chassis that also can host a vga option card but it is very different from the q24/25 card and is not compatible. I’ve started working on a reproduction for that one but have it major snags so I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever have one for sale
