It's kind of interesting how much this resembles Catacomb, the game that Id software remade as a first person action game shortly before obtaining the rights to Wolfenstein. It's like a weird evolutionary offshoot that never actually existed to bridge the gap between the two series (Wolfenstein being a stealth series involving wearing disguises and obtaining papers to get past checkpoints and Catacomb being a home computer version of Midway's Gauntlet series of arcade games

Whenever I tried, I would end up shooting EXPLOSTIVES and dying. Sometimes the EXPLOSTIVES were off the screen so I didn't know what on Earth had happened. I also got confused with the film Where Eagles Dare. To be fair, it IS quite a complex plot. Also there is Ingrid Pitt who ALSO does not like Nazis.

I think I got this and Uridium on original for my 11th birthday. Other than the ever present worry of detonating some explosives off screen it was pretty solid for the time. Not a huge amount of variety but looked good and offered a solid enough experience. Like a lot of later 8 bit games it did turn up on the ST and Amiga and lost most of its charm in the process.

Strangely though I have no other memories of playing it after this which is strange for such a good game? I agree with you, it's definitely a 'Good one'. Great video as always! 👍🥉🎖

I played the C64 version and...I don't remember there ever being an easy mode? It was just really tough because you have a finite amount of ammo but an infinite number of bad guys to shoot because they would respawn off-screen constantly, and then of course you have the multiple shots to kill each of them. I think I might have to play this one next time around.

Strangely, I was thinking about the theme song for "Denver The Last Dinosaur" over recent days...how odd! Used to watch SuperTed as well - I think they used to sell SuperTed branded vitamin tablets at one time - a brilliant way to get kids to take supplements. There was a copycat of Into The Eagles Nest several years after (which I can't remember the name of) but the objective was to rescue the president's daughter. The game was almost an exact copy of this one (same overhead style, same game mechanics etc.)

Damn, going gun crazy at CPAC? Talk about ironic. Oh, this was before Nazis were welcomed by the party of Lincoln and the confederate cause? Damn. I miss those days. That specific part of them, anyways. Anyways, your story about looking for an eagle reminds me so much of how I handled "Watch the birdie!" when getting my picture taken for the first time. There was no bird! And I only just discovered that there actually used to be one! The bird was real all this time - meaning a century before mine - I was just being ripped off.

Is it ironic that while in reality ( the one made of atoms) real soldiers were sneaking around German castles shooting Nazis, the real Alan Turing was secretly inventing the computer. Then 45 years later, the computer technology he invented had won the war, and then advanced to the point at which you, a young still English speaking child was able to play a virtual reality version ( now made of pixels) of same Nazi castle experience. If not ironic, then at least worth pointing out in a KZbin comment?

A good spectrum game? And it's not even April 1st! On a more serious note, and I loath to make a serious point on what is obviously intended as comedy, but the problem with the whole "punch a Nazi" meme isn't that it's about hating Nazis. Nobody objects to hating Nazis other than Neo-Nazis, so on the surface such a statement is uncontroversial and seemingly reasonable. The problem is that in modern parlance, the standards for who is a Nazi is rather flexible and subjective. Suddenly you have a seemingly obvious statement turning into a meme as a tool for control and suppression, and a justification for committing actual violence. Anybody objecting to the sentiment must surely be a Nazi and therefore, at best, undeserving of consideration, and at worst deserving of ridicule and violence.I hesitate in writing this because I'm aware that even this comment is sufficient in some minds to label me a Nazi, or right wing, of which I am not remotely either. My protestations of course, only serve to solidify the idea that I am a terrible person in the minds of those who subscribe to the meme. It's no longer necessary to affiliate or even behave like certain tribes to be labelled such, simply not toeing the line or disagreeing with other tribes is suffice. Reasonable discourse is reduced to mockery and name calling, and everyone is shoehorned into a neat binary of positions. Black or white, good vs bad, with or against.
@RoseTintedSpectrum
@RoseTintedSpectrum 9 ай бұрын
I mean, I don't disagree. I am left-leaning with a mostly socialist bent, but I'm also exceptionally level-headed when it comes to other political beliefs. I've friends across both left-wing and right-wing spectrums, some further to the left than me, a lot further to the right. I don't agree with labelling everyone and everything a fascist because it reduces the term down to mudslinging and is, ultiamtely, pointless; it also tends to push people further into their beliefs to a dangerous degree because they are likely to squirrel away into an echo chamber of gradually exclusive political hotpoints (this also goes for the other side of the political spectrum). This is the internet, however, and unfortunately: Discourse is black and white. There is virtually no point arguing anything on the internet because you're essentially arguing with someone who has already decided their opinion is correct. Two megaphones yelling past each other. You're better off farting into a teacup.
@himselfe
@himselfe 9 ай бұрын
Precisely! Traditionally I vote left-of-centre, and there was a time I considered myself left-leaning with a somewhat socialist bent. But in reality if I _must_ adopt a position on the political spectrum I'm a centrist, which makes me persona non grata to both extremes, and a favoured pinboard for labels and mischaracterisations. I'm just wary of certain memes because they can be unnecessarily polarising. From your comment I think we are mostly of like-mind. There will always be extremes, and ultimately they're in a symbiotic relationship with each other. It is the pushing of reasonable people to align with either extreme that concerns me. I try to find safe havens from politics in the online media I consume, but that has become harder and harder to do, and thus I find myself feeding it with my recoiling. Can't escape the storm so ima just sit in my boat and ride. 😮‍💨
