Fun fact: Every Agni Kai we see in the show has ended dishonorably when it is hailed as a battle of Honor. First Zhao bent fire at zuko's back after being defeated. Then we see ozai burn Zuko who wasn't even fighting. And lastly azula bends at Katara who was a bystander. I like the way it has all bee developed.

Plus, in all three, Zuko behaves honorably, even though he was seen as the “less honorable person” of the combatants (the exiled prince vs a high-ranking commander, and two fire lords). He spares Zhao’s life, he refuses to fight his father, seeking a non-violent solution, and he sacrifices his chance of victory to save Katara.

@@PearseNation there is such a thing as fighting for honor; it’s just that the villains in the show don’t display it. Zhao vs Zuko is the perfect example. Zuko is fighting for honor in that instance, and he shows that he is honorable by how it turns out.

Yeah. Really shows the ones that were bad were few characters in the Fire Nation. I mean, even in The Headband episode where Aang goes to school, the citizens don't seem evil at all. Just stiff and boring due to indoctrination. I don't think there was really a radical shift in living in the Fire Nation except students education. I wonder if adults needed to take a little crash course in the true history.

Unpopular opinion-I know-but the ending of this show has aged terribly for me. It’s literally my least favorite part of the show now. Aang is faced with an impossible decision and ultimately gets handed a silver bullet through a deus ex machina at the last second. It’s lazy writing. I think it would have been so much more interesting to see Aang choose between executing and sparing the Firelord. It would have shown a lot of growth in his character to come to terms with that decision and put his own personal desires for purity and blamelessness aside. What we end with is a relatively static version of Aang that doesn’t really change all that much from episode 1 of the series. He’s still a kid who gets his way without having to make any long-term intentional sacrifices. I mean, I’m glad that other people are satisfied with the show’s conclusion. ATLA definitely deserves its praises and the cultural legacy that it has built for itself. But the fact remains, I really can’t bring myself to saying anything remotely positive about the writing for the final episode of this show.

I think the interesting thing with Zuko is that because of iroh’s influence, he’s always had his honor. Someone else mentioned something about zuko always being the honorable one in all three Agne Kais in the show (Spares Zhao, refuses to fight his father, sacrifices himself for katara). So in that sense his journey was more discovering that he did rather than regaining it. Like the worst thing he did was probably using katara’s necklace as a bargaining chip and of course the end of season two.

Another thing, some people would’ve liked if Zuko had been the one to defeat Azula in the end instead of Katara, but the way it actually played out was a perfect close to both characters arcs. Zuko fully restored his honor not through the defeat of another (like he’d been taught) but through sacrificing himself for another. As for Katara, by defeating the fire nation’s next corrupt ruler, she was able to get herself an honorable vengeance against the fire nation for what they did to her mother.

If you look closely, Avatar Kuruk’s love interest looks a lot like Kyoshi, and Roku’s wife looks a lot like Aang. Yeah, loosing her friends really hurt her. But even then, I think she could have probably reasoned that the sacrifice was worth it for power. After that, she found out she wasn't going to be Firelord, or more accurately, that she was but it was an empty title now. That really made he feel like everything she gave up for power was all in vain. But, at least she was still better than Zuko, right? Wrong. Zuko was fighting evenly with her. Then, when it was all said and done, Zuko was standing there with a friend and actually looking down on her. At that point, she had lost everything, and her sanity went with it.

"Selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs" is honestly the hardest line in the show in my opinion. It really cuts to the heart of Aang's predicament - it correctly calls him out for selfishly pursuing a moral high ground that helps no one. It points out that Aang is willing to risk the lives of thousands, if not millions, just to make a choice he can live with.

Every single time I see this finale, I have to remind myself how beautifully tragic the Final Agni Kai really is. The writers could've made it a huge, fantastical battle between two comet-powered master level Fire-benders. Instead, we got the tragic breakdown of two sides of a family. We got to see the irreparable damage that a masterful manipulator can cause to a 14-year-old girl. Throughout the series it's so hard to remember that Azula is a child just like Zuko, begging, craving familial affection, convinced that Ozai is the only one who can give that to them. Azula had to grow up so quickly so she could please her father, no wonder she broke down when she thought he abandoned her. Truly a tragic character, yet irredeemable all the same. I've yet to come across another villain that is written so masterfully.

I love the fact that this series ends in multiple enormous battles taking place in different locations, but that the dominant feeling is one of sadness. That's the way it should be. War isn't fun. The last thing every major character said directly to Aang Sokka: you were all like (strange whisping fighting sounds) and the firelord was all like (strange choking dying sounds). A perfect summary of him being a goofball. Katara: Aang, don't walk away from this. Katara with a classic mother line. Toph: you have the craziest adventures when you dissapear. Toph's main reason for joining the team was to go on fun adventures. Suki: so did you y'know finish the job? Suki is very goal oriented when she has her mind set nothing stands in her way. Zuko: we'll rebuild it together. Zuko has spent the whole series trying to regain his honor rather than creating his own honor. Uncle Iroh: you can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving you will come to a better place. Uncle Iroh with classic wise advice. If that doesn't summarize his character the whole show what does.

2 things I want to point out. 1. Iroh, the Dragon of the West, the warlord who BREACHED the WALL, rescuing the city he almost (?) conquered... It's basically Ba Sing Se's equivalent of the Dark Lord returning from the dead to save the day this time. And that's just ONE of the SUBPLOTS of this show! 2. Note the advice Aang was given about handling Ozai. Roku said to be decisive. Kyoshi said only justice would bring peace. Kuruk said that he needed to actively shape his destiny and the destiny of the world. Yangchen said Aang had to be willing to sacrifice his spiritual well being and do whatever it took to save the world. None of them ever actually said he had to kill Ozai, but that's what Aang understood they were saying, and he was probably right. But he was forgetting the advice he got all the way back in Book 1. "Think like a mad genius." Aang actually followed every bit of their advice to the letter. He just did it his way.

Another thing, when Aang went into the avatar state, just as it always happens, he went into it because his fight or flight response triggered it, and it wasn't him at the wheel. In this moment, the other avatars took control cause they knew based on what they felt and knew from Aangs spirit, that he wasn't gonna be able to do what they felt needed to be done. They were running the show, and they were ready to kill.

So a lot of people think Aang was not in control when he went into the Avatar state in this last episode. Aang was in almost complete control in this avatar state he was just literally battling himself inside himself so he thought he had too that the fire lord wasn’t gunna give him the opening to energy bend him. So he had to get Oozai into the position. The reason I believe this is Aang has never been able to bring himself out of the Avatar state without Katara there and this time he was.

This is an unfortunate misconception people have. Aang learned to control the avatar state back in Ba Sing Se before his chakra was blocked by Azula. That's why he was immediately able to enter it when the rock hit that specific spot. If it was just a mindless defense mechanism avatar state, he wouldn't have displayed his mastery of the elements. That was him at the wheel, and he decided to stop and not to kill Ozai.

IMO, I feel Azula is quite a tragic character. She basically grew up in an environment where her worst traits were intentionally cultivated by her parental figure, without a counterbalancing figure to guide her away from that path. Where Zuko had his mother and then Iroh to help him find his way, neither of them were there for Azula. It's worth remembering that despite her cunning and penchant for cruelty, she is Zuko's *_younger_* sister. Meaning, she's probably only a few years older than Aang's biological age, younger than Sokka and Sukki, and thus pretty much still a child.

Yeah, this is why Azula is my favorite character in the entire show, she might appear to be a one-dimensional villain at first, but she has a lot of hidden complexities but makes her one of the most interesting characters in avatar. The way I read her is that she was raised to be a certain way by her father, but ultimately what she really desires is love and affection, something she thought she was getting from her father, but in truth he doesn't care about her and is only using her for her talents. And she felt abandoned by her mother as well who she thought only had eyes for Zuko. @@gawainethefirst Of course she's responsible for her actions. Though there is a reason that those under the age of consent are afforded special tolerance and protections. They are children and it is a time they're learning their actions have consequences. Society understands that behavior in childhood is not immutable. What's sad is knowing that she is a product of her parenting. She reflects the destruction of her father. Using his example as how she thought she was supposed to behave. Only to come face to face with the reality of it. She was alone in the end. It didn't matter how good or skilled she was, she was alone and was responsible for her own down-fall. Zuko is her foil for that. He learned through experience that his father's lessons where destructive. If not for Iroh he'd also be alone, consumed by his obsession's. ATLA ending will always be one of the best, despites its issues such as the deus ex Machina. But it is the perfect finale, because the idea of having both fights is genius. You have one fight where everything was leading up to, the stakes are extremely high, it is extremely epic and grandiose, full of spectacle, the visuals are amazing but it is apersonal. Because other than saving the world, there is not much emotional weight to it. But you have the juxtaposition of the Agni Kai, where the stakes are not as high, the fight is not as grandiose, everything is more subdued in terms of spectacle, but the emotional weight of it is extremely high that elevates everything to a whole other level. After watching the whole series, there is no way to watch that fight and feel nothing. So it is perfect because it balances everything that is needed to make a great finale fight. Somehow they managed to have their cake and eat it too.

For hardcore fans who read the comics, there's a book4 Air. It has 3 main arcs, one dealing with decolonization of fire colonies in earth territory, where some colonies are so old that earth and fire benders sort of merged into a single society and it they dont want to rerurn to the way of 4 seperate kingdoms leading to a new type of society to be born with all types of benders living together. Second arc is about zuko's mom who was banished and went to her remote village to reunite with her childhood sweetheart and has a daughter (technically zuko's half sister and shes a kind happy good sister this time) to hide their identity from fire nation, ursa and her lover had wish granted from a spirit called "mother of all faces" ironically shes mother of "koh the face stealer" creep, who grants them normal faces and removes past memories they have a reuniting moment and azula (a schizophrenic maniac by this time) gets an ending to her story. 3rd arc deals with the exponential tech boom that happens with all bending styles working together which harms nature and spirits become angry and aang tries to resolve the rift between human and spirit world.

Apparently it is hard for some people to grasp that when a guy is nothing but evil towards you, in all your experiences with him, and the one time you thought he had changed, he betrayed you and almost cost the life of the guy you love - and you _don't_ get to watch his tragic backstory, his struggles to become a better person, and his relationship with his awesome uncle, like the viewers of a certain cartoon series do - then you'd have to be kinda _brain-damaged_ to instantly trust him… …and hug him and kiss him and drop Aang in favour of him, the way a certain segment of the fandom demanded. 😛 As for _The Legend of Korra,_ my impression is that a large part of the more negative reviews aren't based on what the show is, but on what it _isn't:_ namely "more of _Avatar: The Last Airbender"._ It's a separate story with different characters going on a completely different journey in a different time and setting, which just happens to be in the same world. In fact, I'd say that the creators made a mistake, tying _Korra_ a little too closely to _Avatar,_ thus creating the initial, false impression that it would be a _continuation,_ rather than its own thing. I feel that if they had set it even _further_ in the future and had allowed Aang's adventure to be more historical, rather than as recent as one or two generations ago, then the problem of those wrong expectations could have been avoided, and fans of _Avatar_ would have gone in with a more open and accepting mind.

I absolutely recommend watching the Legend of Korra! Living up to T H E avatar series is really hard, but I genuinely think TLOK explores a lot of really fascinating, more adult themes. It definitely has its difficulties, to no fault of the studio really, but I think it is worth it. The channel Blind Wave went about it really well, they did their best to watch TLOK as its own thing separate of comparing it to ATLA, and they seemed to really have a blast. Completely separating them is impossible, but if you can enjoy it for what it is and not expect it to be a copy of ATLA, I think you can still enjoy it. There are some really amazing moments in TLOK and the animation is insanely impressive. I hope you at least consider it but Im so happy you enjoyed ATLA so much!

@@Pearlem I see your point but I would honestly say you could say the same for ATLA as much as I love it, and I do love it more than TLOK. Zuko absolutely has a masterful, complex arc, but in the end it’s very good guy v cartoonish villain being Ozai. I don’t know if I’d say TLOK is complex either, but I don't really think they were trying to be deeper than they actually were. I personally think they were able to explore some deep concepts, especially with Korra's character. While I understand why people don't like Korra's character, I love that she isn't just a carbon copy of Aang. Her not necessarily being able to fulfill her dream of being the hero of the world like Aang was a really cool idea they took. Plus, I personally do think some of the villains are a lot more fascinating than just an evil firelord that wants to rule the world. Amon is super compelling. Exploring inequality with non benders was a really cool route they took, and I think what was so good about Amon was he really was making some good points. I won’t lie, kuvira was kind of a meh bad guy to me, and obviously the uncle guy was just trash period. But I think the producers/studio knew that TLOK would never “live up” to the grandness of ATLA and they just had a good time expanding the world and doing different things. Sorry for the long reply, I just love the world lol, I don't mind having different opinions and Im not necessarily trying to change your mind but just share my own perspective!

@@clairehiggins9685 ok, so the thing is aang isn’t a perfect person either. People usually tend to hyperfocus on his pacifist morals and end up forgetting he had a lot of character flaws and moments bin the series where you can see he is still a lost child trying to understand the world. While yes, the series is a standard good guy vs bad guy conflict, it’s not simple in the slightest because the themes and moral issues explored in it are complex. For example: the genocide of the air nomads, the inherently destructive yet nurturing power of fire, the inaction of Roku causing the war, how the different people react to the avatar missing for 100 years, how the war has affected the normal people of the world, etc. Meanwhile korra tries to tackle “deeper” ideas by attempting to talk about politics. For example: the inequality of non benders could be a very interesting issue to explore but the show barely focuses on it. Sure, the bad guys are equalists but we barely know what they’re fighting for. The series shows zero instances of inequality before the armed revolution starts and after Amon is defeated we never hear about this problem again. Then they did god vs satan (which is fundamentally the simplest story there is) followed by one of the worst portrayals of anarchy in animation before giving up and just doing ozai again. Korra tries to be more complex but fails because it is not as mature as the show that preceded it

Granted I only saw season 1, I don't think that's why people have issues with it. I had issues with it, because it had a lot more plot holes and because unlike in ATLA characters to progress didn't actually have to do the heavy lifting. For example how Korra was told by Tenzin, that to learn airbending she had to get more detached from her emotions and when she finally got the airbending in the nick of time it was because she got mad, which is precisely opposite, which in turn didn't feel earned. Much like Aang's spirit just effortlessly giving her bending back. Another thing is, that the love triangle in the beginning also seemed kind of forced.

Yay!!! The Avatar finale, and the show in general, is just some of the best television out there regardless of genre or medium. If you want more stuff like Avatar, the story continues in a bunch of canon comic trilogies, as well as its sequel series The Legend of Korra, which is a bit more mature in tone and geared more towards a teen audience. Aaron Ehasz, one of the show’s head writers, also has a fantasy animated series called The Dragon Prince on Netflix, which is at three seasons and counting, and features Sokka’s voice actor Jack DeSena. But honestly for me the show that comes closest to capturing the spirit of Avatar is Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeasts, also on Netflix. It’s done by the same animators who worked on Korra, but more importantly the show’s writing, character dynamics and voice acting are as impressive as Avatar’s was, telling a rich and fully realised story over the course of three seasons.

It is impossible to compete with Avatar, that's what happens when you create such a flawless and beautiful show. Legend of Korra in my opinion is truly worth watching. Despite some of the areas it fumbles in due to Nickelodeon not fully committing after every season I have to say I actually do hold Korra closer to my heart than Avatar and that's an unpopular take but please hear me out. The Legend of Korra has some of the best world building I've seen in a "children's show". It has such a beautiful and emotional soundtrack that I could listen to for hours. Korra is complex, she is the complete polar opposite of Aang and this is actually a good thing! I see so many people claim to dislike Korra because she's not Aang, but that is entirely the point. She is such a strong character and the emotional journey she undertakes throughout the show touches on love, friendship, found family, growth, disability, mental health, acceptance and trauma. I will only touch on this subject briefly due to it being within spoiler territory but, Korra helped pave the way for queer romance in children's media and it was such a beautiful thing to see growing up as a queer kid. You should not compare it to Avatar, nothing compares to Avatar, but it is a beautiful addition, blemishes and all and it is such a wonderful and emotional journey to allow yourself to take.

The Leyend of Korra is about the next Avatar after Aang. It's divided in 4 different Books and it's totally worth it to watch. It's very fun! The only thing I would warn you about is that it was originally thought to be a single season, but Nick saw how popular it was and they asked for a second one, so the team was like "Oh, damn, now what?" hahaha. After that, Nick asked for two more seasons and the team could finally work out a longer story. That may be why you could feel the first two a little different from the others. Anyway, I really hope you watch Korra some day :D

I think she’s like… my tenth favorite character? But she’s still better than most characters in most other shows. That’s how good the show is. And I REALLY don’t understand her getting hate. I actually thought she got more interesting this season, with her dealing with distrust of Zuko and her hunting the man who killed her mother. Like, people love Zuko, and he can be extremely annoying and has a million flaws, at least in the first two seasons. I guess it’s because Katara is supposed to be a protagonist, or just because she’s a woman.

@@calvinjohnson6242 my guess is that a lot of people first watched Avatar when they were kids, so the cautious, motherly, reasonable character isn't something that they can really relate to. But the other characters are relatable for younger audiences: a goofy but smart warrior boy who grows up a lot during the show, a misunderstood prince searching for his destiny without having a clue what that is or means and a young girl just wanting to be herself and be loved and respected for that.
@calvinjohnson6242

@@ichmeiner4531 I gotta admit, though she’s a great character, I don’t particularly love Katara. She has a few amazing episodes, but besides that, she isn’t particularly complex. Most of the time, she is relegated to an audience surrogate, that reacts like a normal person and keeps the group on track. She is the only main character that almost completely refrains from comic relief, and is the serious character the more comedic characters can bounce off of. She is rarely people’s favorite character, but she needs to be there, or else the group would have no backbone.

@@calvinjohnson6242 She is my favourite character. She made me the woman I am today. What she goes through is incredibly hard just like everyone else, because she is so motherly, tender, and emphatic people seem to forget that. Her resolve, her passion, her compassion... She is so admirable. So strong. She is all this while being a flawed character. We rarely (especially a decade ago in a cartoon) see a girl/woman with flaws while they are decided to be the motherly figure in a piece of art. I always loved that she was so complex.

Tons of people were disappointed going into LOK because they were expecting ATLA's level of writing and character development. Unfortunately Korra was horribly mishandled by Nickelodeon, and the writers had no idea how many seasons they would get. For that reason the story and characters really suffered for the first 2 seasons. It drove away a lot of people from watching it, including myself.

It actually is surprising that they would do that - considering they essentially had full control of the Earth Kingdom. And the only real threat was a not-even-close-to-fully-realised Avatar (from their perspective). That's why the plan is just insane.

I feel like they balance everything a good story needs and they don’t prolong the story longer than necessary but also not like they rush the ending. It ends at the right time with the right ending that I can’t complain about. Great characters. Great plot. Great development. Great world building.

I love how it isn't until after he defeated Ozai that he mastered the Avatar state. The end where he controls it for the first time to put out the fires feels so earned. The music throughout is amazing. So annoying that you cannot get it officially. For me it is one of the best fantasy stories period. The world building. Characters and their journeys. The music. The way they drew it like live action and used actual martial arts for reference with the fighting. The choice to use familiar animals but in a different way. And the story itself always leaves me feeling uplifted with hope and inspired after watching the series.

These episodes always make me emotional. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen it. The last Agni Kai is so raw and beautiful. When Aang goes into the avatar state, “I don’t think boomerang is coming back” and the look on Toph’s face when she believes she’s about to die and can’t even see as it happens, Iroh burning down the banners, thereby undoing his old dreams, the pure FEAR in Ozai’s face when he realizes he’s screwed. It’s just, just so perfect. You’re right about the music too. The composition in the Last Agni Kai and how they cut out all sound effects and just had the soundtrack and visuals was so well done and really, I think, made it feel like you are there. Just so focused on the fight that everything else is drowned out.

Agree! Plus Nickelodeon gave them such a hard time with the production. From featuring a lead female avatar, to budget cuts, to green lighting one season at a time, to airing the 4th season online only, to not allowing queer representation, and so much more. That's why I still love LOK despite its shortcomings. If Nickelodeon gave them the same treatment as they did for ATLA, I feel like the show would of excelled more. I also LOVE the world building. I feel like all Avatar universe fans imagine what an Avatar would be like in different time periods. Imagine an Avatar in the time of social media or something. It's fine if people don't like LOK, but it's definitely worth a watch instead of not watching it at all.

One more repaste as I think it's worth saying especially with someone like Nat who doesn't like to muddy waters. I think with TLOK they really do not integrate character development well with the main characters in general, and also the way the choose to have the sons and daughters of characters in this series is really bad continuation/writing of what they obviously show themselves to be in ATLA as loving carers. Some of the meta is well done, some of the work is well done, but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth many times. I think if we considered it a different and worse parallel universe in terms of how ATLA characters would behave/be of character in the future as well as one with worse character development for the general main characters, then it certainly has good story and interesting meta with that.

@@Tom_McMurtry Why do you think the way LoK characterizes the Gaang in relation to how they parented their kids doesn't make sense? Aang had to raise his only airbending son to carry their entire culture, of course he would neglect the others in some way. Toph was raised with no freedom, of course she would give her kids as much freedom as possible. Plus she was a single mother of two working a high stress job, of course she'd mess up a bit. I don't see how these characterizations are "bad writing" in any way.

@@blackpaw29 Perhaps not, but the politics of Korea really does not hold up. And no, I do not mean having a woman protagonist etc. What the writers did with Korra really is saddening because it is almost completely capitalist ideology, the villains of that show would not and should not be regarded as villains for their ideologies but their violent acts, but the show tries to make the viewer believe that their violent acts are as a result of their ideologies. It is not simplistic, but it is definitely elitist, classist, and capitalistic. It is baffling to me how the both shows have the same writers.

Definitely watch the Legend of Korra! The story is about the avatar after Aang. The problem many people had with it is that they went into it expecting, basically, The Last Airbender, but Korra really is its own show with new characters, a totally different avatar, new challenges, etc. I believe if people never saw The Last Airbender, they'd be totally fine with Korra, but they just keep comparing it to ATLA. Just go into it expecting that it's going to be different and you won't be disappointed. That being said, admittedly, Season 2 isn't the strongest season, but 1, 3, and 4 are all solid, in my opinion. I really enjoyed these reactions and I hope you'll continue the story!

Same. Aang was always rather connect to the spirits and the more emotional side to being the avatar (he obviously had his psychological problems to deal with as well, maturing to face his challenges head on etc). Korra was always a natural on bending. Her problems trough out the show was much more psychological and required a bit more reading between the lines. Obviously it’s easier to spot “oh he can’t bend earth” than it is to spot the deep trauma Korra deals with in the show. ATLA is definitely better, but LOK gets a bad rep.

Also, in a finale full of amazing character moments, I love the Zuko/Iroh reunion so much. Zuko's father burned and shamed him for daring to speak out of turn, then banished him with an impossible mission (find a person missing for a century). Then Iroh, who Zuko abandoned and personally betrayed multiple times, immediately hugs his nephew and tells him how much he always cared about him.

Legend of Korra is about the next Avatar in the reincarnation cycle. The comic books cover more adventures with Aang, although Zuko is very clearly the central character in two of them and shares just as much importance in another one as Aang.
