I built my first backyard solar array using what I had. A furniture dolly, 1/2 in galvanized pipe and zip ties. It’s very portable and easy to clean PV panels. Worked so well I built 4 more. Now I have 2500 watts of PV panels running my 3 bedroom 2 bath home. It’s all I need.

I saw a set of 7 150W panels and each panels weighs only 3 kilograms or ~7 pounds. I am wondering if this could be supported by a frame of PVC drain pipe. It's quite robust if you construct it properly and is probably cheaper than wood or galvanized steel pipe. I suppose you could shove two PVC pipes in one another for extra rigidity and strength. Yay or Nay?
@Jerry-ko9pi2 жыл бұрын
Looks and sounds like a nice setup. One thing you can do to stiffen things up, is to add some hurricane strips at the timbers. Also, I would add some sort of ground screw to help hold it down from the wind. A couple of dog ground stakes would work. Ones for mobile homes would work, but that might be over kill. When you add the piers, all you would need to do is lift up the complete system and put on top if them with some post anchors.
@CountryLivingExperience2 жыл бұрын
Both good suggestions if I was going to keep this setup long term. Since it is temporary and we do not have much wind here, I am not too worried. Yep, setting it on the piers will be an easy two person lift for sure.

My ground mount for my 3400 watt system is bolted to 4x4x8' fence posts on the high side buried 2 feet in the ground, and rests on concrete patio blocks on the low side. On a hill, through several nor easters, hasn't moved at all. I like the system in this video, and would definitely use it on a future install.

Cool. How did you mount the panels to the wood structure?
@stalwart56k Жыл бұрын
Friendly reminder to all DIYers- copper sulfate pressure treated lumber (everything sold now) will corrode aluminum. If you are planning to attach this mount to pressure treated lumber permanently, I'd recommend a galvanized steel base plate between the aluminum and the pressure treated lumber. PVC decking will compress under load. You could also use a zinc treatment (Rustoleum Cold Galvanized) it you are using some reclaimed un-coated or partially rusted steel, which for a DIY project would be 100% on brand ^_^

I like these mounts. I believe they would be fine for some experimental solar setup to get your feet wet in this tech. Long term, no go anywhere that requires a permit and inspection for grid tied solar, and they would need an engineering sign off. They won't pass in most jurisdictions unless they are footed in concrete or other ground anchoring. I'm in CT and these won't pass inspection. I may try mounting 4 big panels in one of these just to see if the location I am planning a ground array has potential. Since they will not be "permanently" attached to the ground maybe the inspector would look the other way while I play. I could attach wheels and make it portable, or tell them I'm building a solar airplane.

That is hard to say. Ours didn't move at all during the time we had it on the wood but we didn't have many windy storms. We ended up putting it permanently on some concrete piers. Maybe you could try to drill into the rock and epoxy in some rebar, then pour a pier around that.

Very nice way to temporarily fasten them until you work out the final mounting points. Was there a benefit to extending the horizontal pieces out so far past the outriggers? Since you need approx 51" between the struts it would appear that a 5 foot piece would be more than sufficient (per two panels) unless you planned on joining them in the middle. I actually don't plan to - I want two separate 2 panel mounts.

This feels so wrong. I am willing to do some work and looking for something cheaper still. Thinking of something simple triangular in which the panel is part of the construction (diagonal part). Think I got it now: near vertical poles, just a bit tilted, won't take up much ground surface area, with panels fixed in between them. I can easily make up for the loss on the sub-optimal slant by adding a few more panels and it will still be cheaper.

What size was the wood you used 6x6? and what were your cut lengths on all of the pieces? (length, width, etc)
@CountryLivingExperience2 жыл бұрын
4x4's. But if you live in a windy area, I would use a 6x6's. The crossbars are 10ft and the outriggers are 5ft.

Looks like a great product but I wish they'd made the rack just a bit wider so that they could accept the large 550w panels. Max panel width according to the manufacturer is 44 inches and most large panels are 44.6 inches. Even though it's close I don't think you'd have enough room for the end clamps.

Why ground the rack? The DC circuit from the panels is isolated. There's no potential to earth ground in the event of a short to the frame. Or am I missing something?
@MississippiHomesteadJourney6 ай бұрын
It's more for if lightning hits your panels and hopefully keeps it away from your off-grid charge controller or grid-tied inverter.
@beebop98086 ай бұрын
That's the purpose of putting lightening protection devices on your PV wiring. Not attracting lightening to the frames by giving them a clear path to ground basically turning the pv array into a lightening spire.

The bottom bar looks like it has a single mounting bolt at the bottom. And the vertical rack has predrilled holes to accomplish the 25 degree angle. Should it be possible to change the angle of the bottom bar and just drill in a hole for the new angle? This is nice but if it can be adjusted it will be a much better value.
@CountryLivingExperience2 жыл бұрын
You could cut the bottom support strut shorter and re-drill the hole to change the angle.
@keything84872 жыл бұрын
these pieces are all aluminum, correct? i hope so, as i like the idea of this ground mounted rack. i was looking at strut (very expensive-but strong). i am hoping this unit is sturdy enough for the 4 panels it holds from being too front heavy, and tipping.
@CountryLivingExperience2 жыл бұрын
They are an aluminum/steel alloy. I think it is plenty strong enough.

Minute 1:20 or so of the video: Do you have an electric pole from the grid almost in front of your main solar array?? Shading will produce hot spots on your panels and eventually will degrade them... not to say that hot spots can produce electric arcs and start a fire... Take that into account... try to get a thermal camera and monitor those panels from time to time... just a friendly advice... 👋👋👋
@CountryLivingExperience2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the concern. I am not too worried about shading with these type of modern panels. They have several bypass diodes and also are split cell. This makes for an easy reroute of power around shaded cells without many issues. Additionally the sun moves quite quickly and nothing is shaded for more than a very short period of time. Shading is only a big issue if a portion of a panel is constantly in shade while the rest of the panel is not. This would be the case if you lived in a forest with a limited window to the sky.

I bought this same rack. The instructions for this is horrible and out of order. The manufacturer reached out back to me on some questions i had pointed out about the anchor screw steps, they responded with some clarity and said: "...there needs to be some clarifications/corrections in the manual.". You seem to've figured things out. Im just watching to see how you lift/mount your panels on this thing... of course the instructions dont talk about this either. I actually installed the 4 concrete piers using 12" tubes... so my 320W ea panel lift is much higher than your lumber set up.

It appears you could split the rack if you wanted to keep it portable. Just don’t connect the two halves, and you’d have two panels on each skid. Signature Solar says no, but watching your video makes it look feasible. What do you think? You might some more of the end clamps.

I don't think there would be much benefit to that. Having to manually rotate it would be a lot of extra labor for not much payoff.
