It's Barbara Streisand. There's no need to say anything else. She's incredible. One of recorded music's best ever voices.

Cannot say anything more about Barbra than what is said here. For me, it is how she intonates and brings meaning to every word she sings. She goes from incredible highs to soft, stunning lows, and every note in between. Her control, especially her breath control, is one of a kind. Let me also note that one of the queens of R&B, Gladys Knight, does a stunning cover of this marvelous tune.

The Gladys Knight version is indeed superb and offers an entirely different take on the song, but "The Way We Were" has been, is, and forever will be Ms Streisand's song. I love the subtle things she does in it--her breathing, the way she punctuates the T in the line "memories may be beautiful and yeT," etc. It's a glorious recording.

It's a very entertaining film with an interesting plot driving the story. Redford and Barbra are at the peak of their attractiveness-the styles of the 40's become her very much. The song was written expressly for her as the theme song for the film. It became one of her #1 charting singles in the 70's.

There are in my opinion at least 3 Must see films besides "The Way We Were" starring Barbra. "Funny Girl" "Hello Dolly" & "The Owl And The Pussycat." She is truly one of the most talented artists to grace the silver screen. 😄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍

"One Less Bell To Answer/A House Is Not A Home medley is hands down one of the most signature moments listening to her that you will ever, ever have. It's beyond impressive. Whatever you do, DO NOT blow this song off. I played it (and sang it) about 100x's when I was a teenager. I'm 63 now and it still effects me the same way...do I have to say more?!

She's the greatest. Her movie version of A Star is Born is my favorite. The songs in the movie are fantastic and the song Evergreen won many awards. She was a leader of women in Hollywood and got a bad reputation because she stood up for herself as an actress, singer, director and producer. Men in Hollywood weren't ready for her. She's amazing!

There aren't many who would dare try and cover a Streisand song, which is why there aren't, but Gladys put her own style to it and made a terrific version. My personal fave of course is Barbra's, having been a fan throughout her 60-year career, but I like Gladys' too. There just isn't a voice before or since that comes close to the uniqueness of Barbra's; one note, and you know it's her! It's quite clear that when God made her's, he threw away the mold. And then Barbra crafted it through her life's experiences, and gave us all an amazing ride.

Barbra sang the original version and it was used in the movie of the same name: "The Way We Were", of which the video you are using is showing parts of the movie with Barbra and the oh-so-handsome Robert Redford. This was a tearjerker movie, but oh so good; one of my favorites. You should see it, Harry; I don't think you would be disappointed. :-)

Actually, the version used in the film is NOT this version he is listening to--that was the 'studio version', i.e. the one recorded with a more modern arrangement to be released as a pop song. The film version is even more evocative & melancholy..

Marvin Hamlisch composed the wistful melody and Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the poignant lyrics, full of superb imagery. The Bergmans also wrote the lyrics for " You Don't Send Me Flowers, " which had the verse, " Used to be so natural to talk about forever. But used-to-bes don't count anymore, they just lay on the floor 'til we sweep them away. " Now THAT, my friends, is a perfect lyric! Of course, Barbra wrings every last teardrop out of this song. Such control and emotion!

There’s nothing wrong with Gladys Knight’s version (love her!) but it was as you suspected a cover of Barbra’s original which was a much bigger hit and one of her half dozen or so “signature songs.” The film The Way We Were is one of the all time great romances, a HUGE hit in 1973/74 and yes, you need to see it- Streisand and Redford were cinematic magic! (That final scene where Katie touches that blonde lock on Hubbell’s perfectly chiseled forehead! OMG.) The title song by legends Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch won the Oscar and Barbra was nominated for best actress and it should have been her second win to go with Funny Girl. (48 years later and I’m still not over it. Glenda Jackson my ass.)

Barbra Streisand is one of the true mega stars. She has spanned over 6 decades of music. This lady has a fabulous voice & can sing many genres of music. She is a singer, actress & filmmaker & one of the few performers to have received awards in multiple fields of entertainment (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar & Tony). Love the musicals she was in especially "Funny Girl" & "Hello Dolly". She has so many great songs that were hits & she has done numerous duets with famous people.
