Hey Riss & Quan, I’m a NICU nurse and I just wanted to comment on your feeding schedule with your babe; if he’s wanting to feed every hour, that’s usually a sign he’s not feeding well enough during breastfeeding times. He may look like he’s sucking but not enough milk is actually getting to him, or he’s not working efficiently enough to get it (sucking technique or coordinating breathing while sucking, could be your positioning holding him, etc). A rule of thumb for postpartum breastfeeding is that he should not be feeding for over 40 minutes; babies do not have the energy reserve to sustain feeding for that long. If he continues to feed for over an hour, you might want to follow up with the lactation nurse or public health nurse about it! May have long term implications if he’s expending that much time & energy for a single feed. A normal feeding schedule is feeding from 10-30 minutes and waking every 2-4 hours to feed. Please thumbs up this so they can see it 🤗🙏🏻

Totally agree! 40 mins or longer sounds so exhausting and really tough for the newborn. As a mother of four and breastfeeding all four of them, feeding should be no more than 10 mins on each side, if that. I nursed two years with each child. Good luck Rissa, you’ll get the hang of nursing. Just be patient and don’t give up! 💪🏼 Most new mothers give up, it can be frustrating but do not give up!

I thought as much when Riss said baby was feeding for an hour🤔🤔🤔 me being a mum I just wondered unless if baby was sleeping with the breast in the mouth then waking up to suck again🤷🏼‍♀️

When the baby is first born the mom is only producing colostrum which isn't as filling as the milk. The milk contains fats and carbs that colostrum is low in. It's 100% normal for her baby to be cluster feeding right now. I always see nurses give advice based on the standard for formula fed babies . Her baby shouldn't be latched for an hr. But short feedings over the course of an hour is 100% normal. Once her milk comes in it tends to switch to 10min feedings that hold the baby over for longer but in the beginning no. Colostrum doesn't contain enough fat to sustain a full tummy for hours

***Helpful Advise**** When my wife and I had our son we were told to continue life as normal in terms of whispering when the baby is sleep because baby’s quickly adapt to their environment so if you talk regularly and don’t whisper he will learn to sleep through the night regardless. (Which you will appreciate later, trust me!) But if you whisper when he is sleeping then he will become a light sleeper. Much love ❤️
